I think it's just some sort of tradition or standard when people make softwares. Since most console games are (C) 20XX, Company Name Studios. All Rights Reserved, people probably do not want to do stuff like (C) 2011, by DJ_O and want to sound more professional. In fact this is how Omni started in 2001, although it eventually got its site and stuff.

In the case of sites, it also gives the site more views when a software from it tells its name. Of course if everyone starts their own calc forum it can be bad, though, since the community is already saturated with many inactive boards.
