Well, about a month ago, my Ti83+ broke.  (It's the main reason I got my Nspire)  It all started when I spilled some essential oil on the back.  Then the screen went haywire (see photos), and now the screen doesn't work at all.  I can still transfer and backup files with Ti connect, so the calculator itself still works.  How can I fix the screen?

Hmm... The most common reason for malfunctions on 83+es is that the screen doesn't work, or more specifically that the ribbon cable that sends data to the screen is loose. That cable might be your issue. I'm not sure, though.

I have absolutely no idea what happened.  You might want to try putting a post here on Cemetech and seeing if anyone over there knows anything.
Good luck. Smiley

Woah that's quite bad. This is exactly like my TI-80 or close. I agree with Z, Kerm repaired a bunch of calcs himself in the past and I'm sure he'll be able to help you.

Aww, that sucks... Unfortunately, there aren't many hardware freaks out here on omnimaga. I second ZTrumpet, ask on cemetech.
Good luck with your calc!

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Aperture Science:
We do what we must because we can.
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive.

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta we're releasing on time.
So I'm GLaD I got burned think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive.

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa -
THAT WAS A JOKE. HA HA, FAT CHANCE.
Anyway, this cake is great:
It's so delicious and moist.

Look at me still talking when there's science to do.
When I look out there it makes me GLaD I'm not you.
I've experiments to run there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm still alive.
I feel FANTASTIC and I'm still alive.
While you're dying I'll be still alive.
And when you're dead I will be still alive.

lol.  I have 4, 83's like that right next to me.
That can be caused by many different things unfortunately, so diagnosis is hard.

I don't know very much about how the hardware works, but i have fixed several like this, although a couple have reverted back to this quickly.
So here is what you might try...

1.  Remove all batteries, including backup battery.  replace the AAA's and hold down del on the 4th one.
This has fixed a couple.  (you may put in backup battery again now.)
2.  Check the warranty.   They last quite a while.   just don't say anything about spilling anything or dropping.

voids warranty...
3.   carefully remove all screws in your calc.  4 of the back screws can be removed with a standard hex screwdriver, but the bottom 2 require a triwing, as almost no hex's are that narrow and long.
Carefully take your calc apart Tongue.  You should see a big metal sheet.  Just speculation, but i think that is for ground.  Clean it and put calc back together.  Do not put screws in yet, unless it works.
So great that might not have worked...  now take it back apart and look at the screen.  'http://xkcd.com/768/'
look at the tape.  if there are any big folds in it, try to flatten them out, but don't break it.  Also get a couple of q tips and water and clean those connections.  but only a very little water.
     Put back together and pray.

have you already tried to take a screenshot with ti connect? if that works and you get a correct view, than it's the cable to your screen itself, if you get the same view on the pc, there's probably something with the connection in the inner part of the calc, and then you'll have to pray as Happybobjr says xs

Try a full mem reset!
If nothing works, get a new one!

But first think abpout wha data will be lost if you'll get a new one!
My own bro stoped coding on TIs after he lost his unfinished shipshot-game (aready was 140k) which was on his broken TI nSpire!

Mine did the similar thing before except that it would randomly rotate and shift my screen O.x
I got that symptom while I was playing Swords, but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Get rid of the stock ribbon cable and run new wires from the motherboard to the screen module (you will need a soldering iron, solder and some small wires and optional solder braid). Those graphical glitches are mostly caused by that ribbon cable.
