Sorry, garbage collecting is simply the best way. Each of the sectors is 64KB. So, unless you want a 64KB save file, you are going to have to do it the way TI does it.

You can build a statue out of either 1'x1' blocks or 12'x12' blocks. The 1'x1' blocks will take a lot longer, but the final product is worth it.
