That's awesome, but I was actually having troubles with the tiles more than the sprites, like the rocks/floors in the first cave.

Oh, well how much detail do you need for the tiles, because IIRC, the tileset for Cavestory is HUGE, so you probably won't be needing every tile converted.

EDIT: I just pulled a screenshot of the first cave. Are you talking about the actual square tiles or the background tiles?

EDIT2:I just grabbed a small chunk of tiles and worked with it. It's weird, it seems that these tiles have a 5 color palette. If you want, I can probably try and dither the 5th color, but then that would take much longer to do all the tiles.

EDIT3: Had a little extra time so I felt like making a little mockup screen for Cavestory. YES Grin

Wow looks nice o.o. A Cave story game for calcs would be cool! I wonder if using a whole lot of 16x16 tiles would take a lot of space, though? (especially if each tile is grayscale) How many tiles Cave Story has, approximately?

Well, with the tile sheet I have, it's got ~2656 tiles, and that isn't including any of the sprites. The mockup was just for Tribal to see what it might look like in 16x16 grayscale. The game would be much better as 8x8 as detail isn't too important for the tiles in Cave Story anyway.

I was actually thinking about the whole tile size thing actually, because that looks like quite a bit of the screen is being used up, and it might be hard to fit everything in there Undecided

That mockup looks quite nice. The game looks really old skool (never played it before). Is someone planning on making this? O_o Screen space is always an issue on the 83+ series. I always have trouble deciding what size i want tiles to be. Do I want detail, or more screen space? decisions decisions.

Actually, 8x8 is looking pretty good right now. I've just got to put the finishing touches on the 8x8 mockup and I'll post it.

EDIT:Done! I included the mockup, as well as a modified background so you can see the detail in the sprites better.  Grin

8x8 Isn't bad at all, but the HUD could use some work on the 8X8.

I think you should go with 8x8 so you save memory on sprite data

Well, it's not like I can really fit much else there. Are you thinking of maybe putting one on top of the other? That could possibly work, but it's already cramped up there as it is. Plus, the numbers would get jumbled because numbers with a height of 4 is a no go.
