I have an idea that is used on another forum I am a member of but I think this site has more to benefit from it as there are more people posting.

When you are about to post. You don't know if someone posted in the time that you were writting that post until you post. If there was something you wanted to talk about on that post you'd have to edit. What if there was a notice that came up if you tried to post and someone posted before you did and it gave you the option to confirm the post, or modify it.

Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

Oh we already have that on this forum. When you click post, if someone else posted while you were typing, it goes to the reply page with a red warning saying someone else posted while you typed and you may want to edit your post. I think the feature was turned ON almost one year ago, but it did not become useful until around March 2010, when activity exploded. (Sometimes, I get a notice that 4 new replies were made while typing, then I hit submit after editing my post, then get one more notice about 2 more replies Grin .)

Normally it should be enabled by default when you sign up, but I'm not sure anymore. If it isn't for you, then go to Profile->Look and Layout Preferences and uncheck the "Don't warn on new replies made while posting." box.

No problem Smiley

And yeah I really loved when I saw SMF did that. If we didn't have that, imagine the whole mess that would have happened on that 462 post day in the OS 2.1 thread x.x

Of course I guess it could annoy some users if they try to post and get notified everytime, but then they can disable the notices at least, which is good.

From the number of people posting here, it seems like it's not enabled by default anymore. Can it be changed, or is it part of SMF?

For odd reasons, I thought it was enabled, but I guess maybe I am wrong. You need to go to your profile and choose if you want notices or not. If it's not enabled by default, then I can't do anything, since it might be SMF default settings. I still get notices every now and then, btw.

EDIT: According to your profile, you have it set to show notifications. You probably just didn't have much luck on getting any Tongue

Yeah that news article had 270+ comments and is by far the most commented Omnimaga news article ever. The second most commented article had 200 ish comments (2009 Contest) and the third was Doors CS 6 in 2007 with 140-ish.

A lot of the comments came out the day after a reference to the article was posted on Slashdot and I remember posting and getting a lot of red notices about being ninja'd Tongue. Other 400+ post days happened, though, over here, but the posts were so sparse accross the day and night that the notices did not pop up as often. Now I bet it will happen more on evenings due to school Tongue
