The Mysterious Cities of Gold Season 2
« on: June 17, 2012, 12:32:44 am »
This isn't really an anime anymore since it's no longer co-produced by Japan, but only France this time, but since the original series was both anime and cartoon, I decided to put this here.

Anyway it seems Season 2 of MCOG2 will finally come to fruition, after a few years of wondering what happened to the project. I'm happy to see that the original character designs are kept, although Mendoza changed a bit and Kokapelt's parrot voice is way different, so it might take a while to get used to, but it looks quite great and despite the addition of special effects and some 3D graphics, it still seems to remain true to Season 1 graphically. I was a bit disappointed at the new Condor cockpit, though, which seems less detailled. I hope there will be some music besides the opening song that will grab some elements from the original season, though. So far it seems that most background music is way different than in the 1982 series, although I guess that can be understood considering they might try to put it to today's standard.

Anyway you can watch the preview below with English subtitles and I hope the story and content will match the previous season released 30 years ago:

From what I gather, season 2 will air this Summer, 30 years after Season 1, but I saw rumors about 2013 too. Season 3 would be the year afterward and 4 the next one after 3. Each new season are supposed to feature 2 cities of gold (the 1982 season featured 1)

In comparison, here are some clips and songs from season 1, to compare with season 2 above:

By the way, have you ever noticed this reference (see spoiler) in Pokemon Crystal ? ;)
Spoiler For Spoiler:

Back on topic, I never really got into this show, but I am still glad they didn't change everything :)
I hate when they do that, it kills all the spirit of the show.

Is that really inside the game? O.O

And yeah I agree. But this show's spirit is a lot the music, which makes it even more special. It would kinda suck if the entire show became with standard movie/cartoon music. But of course I guess it will inevitably be a bit different than MCOG1 because season 1 was released at a time where music synthetisers started emerging and becoming popular. I wish they would re-use the remade versions of the songs for some parts of the show. http://citesdor.com/musiques/musiques_boub.php3

Yes. I recognized it even without being a fan of MCOG because I often put the TV on without watching when I am alone, and I hear the music of the opening :)
(thanks to DJ_O for telling me how to say "opening" in English, below ;))

What does that say? Can you translate it?
That would mean, approximately
"Child of the sun, you travel around the earth and the sky...
Look for your path, it's your life, it's your destiny."

Ah thank you for translating. I suppose this quote appears in the anime?

The new series looks quite nice. I wonder if Ocean group (based in Vancouver) will do an english dub of this?
In regards to the original music, it was composed by Shuki Levy. He's pretty well know for his work in the 80's and especially Inspector Gadget. I agree that his music is quite nice and distinctive. It would be nice to hear him contribute to the new series, but at a glance it looks as though he hasn't done anything recently.

Was Ocean group the ones who did the english dub of the original season that can be found on Youtube (or used to be there)? If so, then I hope they don't. That english dub made Zero Wing looks pretty well translated.

I doubt they did the original, but they were responsible for the canadian dub (and original US dub of the first few seasons) of dragonballz. They also did Inuyasha, Xmen evolution and Deathnote just to name a few. They are well respected and do good work. If it is in their hands we have no wories. =)

It's finally out and airing in France, and I think Télé-Québec will air it soon. I caught a few episodes on Youtube (not posting links since they're gonna be taken down within days anyway) :D

I only saw the first episode so far and it doesn't seem as bad as some people said, but we can notice some differences that might displease hardcore fans of the original series, especially older people. So far I like it, though.

-First of all, apparently this season was aimed more towards kids and teens rather than the family. However there are still fights, gunfights and sword fights. I think what they meant is that it was just made so the story can be understood easier than the previous series. However the story still seems really great and true to the original so far.

-The character drawings are quite similar to the originals, but some (particularly Mendoza) are slightly less quality (maybe due to being more CG-animated). MUCH better than the 2006 thing by AK Video et BenJ Productions.

-The soundtrack isn't the same, except the opening which is the same. However, while the opening remake is bad (IMHO), the rest of the soundtrack has a similar style as the original, making use of synthetisers and similar instruments

-Kokapelt/Pichou (sp?) voice is annoying in this sequel lol. I am surprised at how similar other voices are, though, considering it has been 30 years since the original season. O.O

But yeah so far I am pleased with it. It just probably will never match the 1982 original. :P

Wow! I still vividly remember spending my early childhood years with friends running around the school yard pretending that we were piloting the Golden Condor!
