Title: Can someone point me to a humanoid spriting tutorial?
Post by: Ashbad on March 17, 2011, 05:53:06 pm
I just tried to make my first humanoid sprite in a while, (attached), and I have to say I'll admit it looks atrocious.  Can someone point me to a tutorial that will teach me how to make decent humanoid sprites?  Thanks in advance ;)

I don't know where there's a good tutorial, but just remember almost all of the human body is in the golden ratio, and then approximate that into a common fraction.  ;)

like 1.61 or something?  That actually helps a lot :)

you see, there's a private contest going on in Eden - World builder (like minecraft Alpha, but for iPad) to make the hottest girl sprite (appropriate, that is) by Friday 12 PM EST.  Winner gets some secret thing that hasn't been announced, probably $10 if it's like all these other 3rd party contests.  And I'm up against some real competition... my friend already finished his model and it blows mine out of the water :P

anyways, thanks :) and now you know why I need a tutorial.

1.618, or 1 over that.  ;)

You want realistic proportions? I've done a LOT of research on human body proportions. I can post some example measurements.

But I guess I'm probably too late now, aren't I?

Nope, just in time for a lemon party ;D jk

But sure, what do you have?

Okay, well here's just a quick explanation. "1/2" is your new best friend for proportion estimation.

Note that in sprite form human proportions usually won't matter, though. In SNES games for most sprites the head is usually 30% of the entire body size. Even in some 3D games they use the Super Deformed thing where the char head is usually disproportional to the rest.

That is completely true. Those proportions are for drawing someone realistically, so you'd probably not want those for something like this.

Also on-calc, sometimes it's more like 70% for just the head, especially when using 8x8 or 16x16 sprites. See ROL3 or Reuben Quest sprites, for example.

I wasn't talking about on calc though...I was talking about human proportions in general.
