OMG SORRY!!!! WARNING!!!! BIG PICTURES DIDN'T KNOW SORRY

Well here are my anime characters. I am thinking about making a cartoon with them called rain but I don't even know where to start so who knows anyways tell me what you think about them. Personally I think arex is the coolest thats why he got my avatar spot.

I'm going to be brutally honest: meh.  The bodies are disproportional (Arex's shoulder joints are too small).  Heads are not supposed to be perfectly flat on top, and the hair really needs work.  Bodies are too skinny (look at Tom's ankles...).  In general once you get the basics perfected, the drawings just need a general polishing as well.

Don't take this as flaming; take it as constructive criticism from one (former) artist to another.

well, I'll agree with Cure, but also keep in mind that everyone has a different artistic style, and different cartooning styles also exist.  If there is one important thing, it's consistency.  A master anime artist can reproduce characters and styles from many perspectives and in many scenarios without much effort.  I heard one trick they use is they try to internalize the basic forms (3D) that make up the character/object and just base everything off that.

For realism, generally hair takes up about half to a third of the initial head shape.

Seeing this almost makes me want to try drawing (not spriting).

if anyone had any advice *cough* cure *cough* on how to get realism into this pciture with some color I would definetly want it cause I know I need help and I like Arex's hair

The best thing you can do in this situation to add realism (other than redraw the characters) with color, is to add lighting effects.  Look at these pictures:



and



Even though these are obviously cartoon (anime) characters, a great amount of realism is added do to lighting effects, like shadows on the shirt.  Pay attention to the body of Ryuk (the first picture).  It's not the same shade of purple all the way across.  And pay attention to hair.  I think hair is one of the best places to express lighting and realism. The way it sticks out, flows, how some strands stand out and some down, and how the shade differs, to make it look like hair instead of just a mass of color.

For color, these websites might be able to help you if you use Photoshop or a similar APP (like GIMP). I occasionally use these websites too.

yea I just didn't have a pencil I was sitting in the principal's office and I'm like can I have a pencil and he was acting stupid so I just used the pen in my backpack
