Title: Hay Bale Pixel Art
Post by: {AP} on April 12, 2010, 06:55:26 pm
Introduction Thingie-
So, some of you know of the popular 'Farmville' game on Facebook. Well, it's created something of a form of art with their hay bales which take up exactly a 1x1 space on a grid that can get as big as 98x98. As such, several people have taken to arranging hay bales into art. Unfortunately, not only do you need to spend some time to level up and get enough money to upgrade the size of your farm to its highest but it costs quite a bit to get enough hay bales to complete your work.

Anyway, this is the whole reason I started Farmville in the first place. For now, I only have one design done (since I only just recently upgraded to the 90x90 farm) and thought I'd share my little hobby with you guys.

Available Hay Bales-

So... as you can see, you're really limited on colors which makes this art even harder.

Finished Designs-

FF1 Practice

Finished with it a a 90x90 farm so I couldn't fit in the bottom GUI thing. I would finish it, but I want to work on another design once I get to 98x98.
Though, I made that GUI pixel-by-pixel. I can't believe how perfectly it fit. =D

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Um...Doggie!

The checkered part is where the crops will be planted. (216 spots) The rest will have scattered animals/buildings/whatever. I'll just have to wait and see.
Anyway, these are Pokemon from the dropped project Pokemon BattleFire. They just looked so great together, I couldn't resist. Hope it comes out well.
(It was a pain in the ass trying to get it down to just using the colors available at 2am while suffering from insomnia and a headache. D= )

Very cool. The only FarmVille pixel art I see is the one with the splash screen when you run it. Nice to see someone actually do it.

There's far more impressive stuff out there and I'm not rich enough to do anything like it yet.
(Plus, I can't easily plan out isometric pixel art with Photoshop... if anyone has ideas on how to manage this, I'd love you forever.)

I use Paint.NET and zoom in a lot.

Well it's still pretty cool :)

By the way, what is the difference between isometric and non-isometric pixel art?
Title: Re: Hay Bale Pixel Art
Post by: {AP} on April 12, 2010, 07:46:23 pm
The problem is that I need it to be isometric instead of normal pixels.
(Which really isn't common anywhere)

I'm trying to make the end result NOT be slanted like you see in that first design. Until then, I'll deal with it, but it just kinda limits things.
I tried rotating the design 45 degrees but it caused anti-aliasing which made it hard to deal with.

Isometric - Three-dimensional view that shows the height, width, and depth of an object. However, it does not change when changing the perspective.
Basically, take a normal map and turn it about 90 degrees.

Ah ok, thanks. Makes more sense. And I'm sorry you're having trouble with that. If I had tips I would help ya out.

Yeah, it's not a common need at all.
Even isometric systems are still drawn out with normal pixels but my 'pixels' (these hay bales) are actually isometric pixels. (which technically don't exist)

I'm thinking about writing a program to simulate Farmville at this point... but I'm lazy as hell.
I'll have plenty of time though. My first semester of college is going to be EASY. I won't even be swamped until Semester 3.

i made this 6 months ago and completely ditched farmville right after this.

Haha, nice. Actually, a video I saw of someone making that on Youtube was part of the reason I started.

It definitely does take a bit more time than it's worth... but I enjoy it. =P

Also, Will_W, It'd be a bit more useful if it was capable of having adjacent colors be the same without losing track of how many there is and being unable to easily change it.
Looks like I'll need an isometric map editor or something.

i can not even tell you how many people have told me they loved it on facebook

Well personally I don't play that kind of game, but I like the art people do with it. Until I saw this topic I did not know such thing existed (the art I mean, not the game). Keep in mind I'm not a big fan of socializing networks, though, and I don't play Flash games much anymore

As for still seeing the grid, make it semi-transparent in a new layer.
As for editing, make a brush out of one of the tiles.

i didn't know there was actually a lot of people that did it lol. I thought I was being original.

Do you mean the grid in the FF1 NES sprites? For some reasons, I kinda like it, it makes it look cool in some ways, idk why

Unfortunately not, the freee download is a trial, meaning it most likely has limited features, usage time or won't let you save annything (altough the later could be partially solved using the print screen key).

Made a new one, this one was hard because sonic had many different shades of colors so I had to improvise.

wow great! Nice job on that! How long did this one take?
Title: Re: Hay Bale Pixel Art
Post by: indubitably on April 21, 2010, 12:36:29 am
well i started it at like 10 so about an hour and a half.
That is just how long it took to place barrels though.
there was the raising of 140k and editing the original pic of sonic on paint so he didn't use to many colors.

Finished the new design. At least... the hay bale part. The rest is chaotic. (posted it on first post too)

Yeah... this took awhile... =P

At first, I did not look very carefully and it felt like a rather NSFW animal scene x.x but then I looked at it properly and it was all fine. Very nice ^^ I wonder how long it took?
Title: Re: Hay Bale Pixel Art
Post by: {AP} on April 24, 2010, 11:20:16 pm
Hm... well, just placing... about 5 hours on just the hay bales used for the dogs. That doesn't include all the time it took to get the money and farm size upgrades though. Plus there was about an hour or so for just designing it in Photoshop first.
Technically, if we count EVERYTHING, this took about 2 months. xP

Regardless, it took WAY too much time and I don't plan on a new design for a LONG time.
So, I hope you guys enjoy this one a lot. ^^;

o.o wow that's A LOT x.x

it must require a lot of patience
Title: Re: Hay Bale Pixel Art
Post by: {AP} on April 24, 2010, 11:26:54 pm
It would've been faster, but a lot of the time was grabbing the hay from the old design and moving it to place on the new one, then selling the remaining hay bales that I didn't use... then halfway through I found out that I was a pixel off on two different sides that made the entire design screwed up so I had to move everything down a bit one at a time... >.<

(Note: Farmville handles everything one item at a time so moving, adding, selling... all have to do that one piece at a time and and there's exactly 1746 haybales there... x.x)

darn that sucks x.x sorry to hear about that

On a totally unrelated note, why is all that Hay talk reminding me of Hays Games Co all of a suddent? :P (the old calc members might remember them)

That's reminds me of someone at school who did some Mario and Luigi pixel art or sth, I think he hoped to get featured on the FarmVille loading bar.

And don't make me play again to FarmVille. ^^

Yeah, they were some sort of joke TI-83 programming group, but at the same time, thieves. They had multiple incarnations from 1998-2006. In their early days there was a ticalc article about them stealing games. They revived/died multiple times over the years.

man this is cool. the only downside is the limited use of colors. oh and programming at 2am with a head ache never comes out well for me. XD

Well, if they were all color (not yellow) it'd be exactly 1,152,000 coins for that.
I'd say with the amount of yellow ones, though... it's about 1,145,000. I'm just guessing though.
