Title: Help with 2D sprites
Post by: njaddison on March 16, 2012, 03:09:08 pm
Are there any good artists that can draw some sprites for a game that I am making for my Video Animation class at school? It's a doom style game, so the sprites have to be first person. I'm going to need:
Dual Wield Ballistic Knife sprites sheet (A sprite for every movement of the knives. I don't have time to make a script for each movement of the knives, so I need a sprite for each movement of the knives). Here are two examples of Ballistic Knives (credit goes to Activision and Treyarch, in Call of Duty: Black Ops, one of the most awesome games I own):

And then, I need some knife sprites (Also from Black Ops):

Railgun (From the Cybercrime 3.0 Deathmatch PWAD for Doom):

Finally, I need some dual wield handrails, miniature railguns that can be held in both hands. This is something that I thought of, so there is not an image for these. As long as they look well, then I don't care how they look.

Since this is your school project shouldn't you be doing this yourself? I don't think it's very likely that someone will contribute to something that you're doing for school and are going to be graded on. Not to mention that the style of sprites you're asking for sound fairly complex. You're also asking for 2d sprites, but saying you need them in first person. This suggests a 3d game and makes the request very confusing. In the future you might also want to give a ballpark figure of what sprite sizes you are going to need.

Well I do a bunch of sprite work, but this seems a bit too much for me too tackle....in addition to the above, if this is for school I am assuming there is a deadline.....which also hinders the quality of work :P but this sounds really cool! Good luck

Our teacher doesn't care about sprites as long as the animation is good. I found some sprites on the internet and I am using them. She lets us use sprites off of the internet, and other places. Besides, I am not just making the game for school, I am making it for fun also. So, even after I turn this game in, I will still probably work on it. I plan to remake this game using id software's id tech 4 engine, the engine that was used to make doom 3.

What I mean by first-person is, Doom is not an actual 3D game. Doom is a semi-3D game, therefore making the sprites within doom 2D. So, what I mean by 2D sprites is, sprites that look as if they were first person, but are really hand-drawn, like the sprites in Doom.

I am trying to draw some of the sprites I listed above, but they look nothing like sprites that would be in a video game. I am trying to make this game original also, while using sprites from Doom and Duke nukem, etc. I am a pretty good artist, but I don't know how to draw things in color and still have them look well. I can pretty much only draw black and white sprites, and I still don't know how to apply shading to the sprites to have them look realistic.

@saintrunner
Also, I don't want one person to do all of these sprites by them self! You'd be doing too much work!

Sorry for Double posting, but I just found out how to make my own sprites using pixel art. I never knew this before, but I found out how to do pixel art using mspaint. I made ballistic knive sprites. The right knife is the ballistic knife, and the left knife is a throwing knife.

Here is a large image:
(https://6501228532666364510-a-1802744773732722657-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/nelsonaddisoncom/image-bin/wingblades.jpg?attachauth=ANoY7coCIr-QhbpcpvzYjRJJdZsJo2Jo-zMdekgqjoWD4UX6KWVfk4GvNuHuZZJ9VcwywMARCWOUVWPGy95Y1wOyci313EgWKjYXim0Wzeap4xa9gtcHVS5E_guBCO5o9mUucLCsVA-P0gCkR-hXUvlrf4nLK7OQaeJWmaPd7BVLfLNhtebhV1sim21T8d02KqhybGCknHpWWDQqcvbsJfLFejKl9RZjvg%3D%3D&attredirects=0)

And here's an image that's not so pixelated (smaller image):
(https://6501228532666364510-a-1802744773732722657-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/nelsonaddisoncom/image-bin/wingblades%20%28211x78%29%20%283%29.jpg?attachauth=ANoY7crzbSdKCx0kIa7ek5JC-6vNuClaYJOVz2HDOUaqOQxIi2iQXEw2IrfEbZTLWmmH5raW1UeCQ5KsjD6iACTbgGwDJi7MRqzHGOjO-NkzgTcKfMrlJhik1ssC92mTjipMO15NMAOJAlmKn8w4E_E97FnSjSzjUCm1YNzTSjXp5KcpXCM-c1lqBrfCVCZGonnaImo369bwLEDkoMyqICAOvK2LKt_fHFuzRIe6yltJZdKitsVeA3zeeKmvfwphuOWxA36BIgnA&attredirects=0)

Wow, I didn't think I could do this, but I did! I don't know how I had the patience to place down pixel by pixel. I guess I did it a little at a time!

I will eventually change the throwing knife to another ballistic knife for dual wielding, but for now, I am proud with what I have!
Question: How do I find the coordinates of the pixels? I am eventually going to port this game to pc c, and nspire c, letting the game be in c and flash, so it might help to use nRGBlib. It allows the placement of pixels, but I have to know the coordinates and exact colors of each one. Maybe I should have found that out while I was doing the knife sprites.

hmm, they look nice :D
You should make the bottoms some darker tho.
good job on them. for the Game tho, I guess you should actually add an alpha channel.

I made the knife sprite too. It seems that knives are the only sprites that I can do well. I tried to make the railgun, but I utterly failed. Here's the knife (You can also download it at the bottom):

Sorry if it looks jagged, I had to enlarge it in mspaint to keep it from looking pixelated, and it made it look distorted kinda.

yes this looks good. Keep trying at a railgun, I bet you can do it ^.^

Looks like I have pretty much found out how to do everything I need except the railgun. I did the handrails at school, but they are in my home(H:) drive which I can't access from home. They are fully-automatic, dual-wield, handheld railguns. They fire bullets containing a corrosive plasma substance. The bullets burst open on impact, and the plasma burns whatever it touches. I got the burning plasma idea from Doom and Halo.

I found out how a plasma gun works. The plasma is hot ionized gas which is launched, therefore making it the plasma gun. The BFG 9000 and the plasma gun from Doom are examples of these. The Plasma pistol and plasma rifle from Halo are also examples of these.

I had the great idea to make a gun in my game which would force the ionized gas into a "capsule bullet". The bullet would have to be made out of some easily broken material. So there, we have two handheld railguns that shoot exploding plasma bullets. Not only will the enemy feel pain like a regular bullet shot, but they will also have plasma microwaving them from the inside. Pleasant thought, isn't it?  :) :( *.* D: XD  ;)

Shouldn't this be in Pixel Art and Drawing subforum?

Yeah, you should consider moving it since now you found out how to make sprites.

Yeah, I just love the warm feeling I get on my insides when I think about that! Makes me smile just picturing it in my mind!

Oh yeah, I'm not really new to omni. I just joined. I don't want to make any games or anything, I just like to get games for my calculator. I just joined so I could chat and give suggestions about games and programs.

Oh, hi. When I joined omni, I felt the same way, but now I feel involved in the community here.

Shouldn't this be in Pixel Art and Drawing subforum?

I don't know how to move a topic. Can you tell me how, or move it for me?
