Title: Mario Sprites
Post by: SirCmpwn on November 04, 2010, 08:45:02 am
Hello,
I need Mario sprites in 16 level grayscale please.  I don't particularly care about the size, but keep it around 16x16 and make sure everything is a good size compared to everything else.
Thanks!

Someone is making a Mario Nspire clone? ;D

Are you looking for a certain style of Mario (SMW, SMB3, SMB1, etc) or just whatever floats your boat?

Whatever flubs your goat floats your boat, Magic Banana.

Well, here are the grayscaled versions of some of the SMB3 and SMW Mario's.  Those games actually have a surprising amount of sprites for Mario. I left them intact for the most part, changing only minuscule things from the spritesheet.

If you want the entire spritesheet, I could post that as well. IIRC, These sprites only use 11-12 different colors so yeah.

Thanks, they look pretty good, but for some reason I'm not entirely satisfied with them.  Could we try the NSMB sprites?

NSMB Mario was made of polygons, I'm pretty sure.

That's what I felt as well

Yeah, SMB3 looks a little dark while SMW looks a little off as well. I could mess around a bit to get the right colors.
Here's also SMB1, in case you want to see that as well.

And yeah, NSMB used polygons.

Hmm, thanks.  I think I'll use NSMB's overworld sprites, though.

whoa, that's a lot of sprites...

and I guess you would only need half of them for animating, as that many sprites is unessicarily too much for a calc of any kind :P

I think I've decided to use the SMW sprites, but thank you!  I would appreciate the background (http://www.mariomayhem.com/downloads/sprites/the_new_super_mario_bros_sprites.php) sprites converted, though, if you wouldn't mind.  If those ones don't convert well, we can try these (http://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/smarioworld/index.html) ones.
I also need some enemies (http://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/smarioworld/sheet/4586) :)

Really nice, actually!  Thanks!
Could I also see the others in case they end up looking better?

By the way, for clarification, those SMB1/3 sprites are from the SNES/GBA remakes of SMB3. The originals were much different. However, since it's for the TI-Nspire, I guess it's best to take advantage of the graphical capabilities to maximum. I just wanted to point that out in case, since a lot of people here were not born in the NES era.

Yeah, I pulled these from Super Mario All Stars, which is a compilation of the early Mario games with a graphical overhaul and slight changes to the physics. I still do prefer the originals to the remakes, they just don't feel the same.  :-\

SMB3 is still a favorite of mine and the cartridge still works, although the controller is really beaten up from being thrown around a lot. Some of those NES games just didn't want you to beat them (looking at you, Contra >:().

TI-Nspire actually has only 15 colors on the screen, so it might be a good idea to have the 16th color represent transparency. The colors 0 and 1 are identical (at least in the OS's color palette; the literal colors sent to the LCD are 15 and 14 in case you care to know). So, you could treat color 0 as transparent. This would save at least a bit per pixel in storage :)

So, NSpire has 15 colours, what about TI-8x calculators (83 and 84)?

scoutdavid: they only have black and white (so 2) but it is possible to program in grey colors by rapidly switching pictures back and forth.

You also need to do some interlacing or dithering, but I'M not sure how to explain it. Dithering is to prevent flickering effects. You will see some scanlines, but it will look much better.
