Title: Shakespeare's comics [webcomic]
Post by: squidgetx on September 23, 2011, 09:57:36 pm
Hey guys, I've started a webcomic (golly gee whiz!)

Anyway, here it is: shakespeare's comics (http://www.shakespearescomics.tk)

Uh, not sure if this should go into web dev or here...lol
Feedback/criticism/tell your friends ;D pl0x

Thanks to Eeems, juju, and cooliojazz for all their help with setting up the site.

I'm enjoying this.  If the quality remains where it is now, I think I'll check it pretty regularly. :)

I've cleaned up the site a little bit, added a new comic, made a facebook group, and made a new logo. Let me know what you guys think :)

Looking good :)
Btw, are you planning on making a storyline or anything out of this ( like QC ) or at least making some constant characters ( like xkcd )?

Also, if you want any help with coding that you don't want to do yourself feel free to pm me about it I'd love to help :)

Looks nice but you should probably use something else than .tk, since it has crappy uptime (see Omniurl.tk, for instance) and also the Like button doesn't fit in the box at the bottom in Opera, so you might want to make that box a bit larger.

Hey DJ_O! do you use opera?

Are there any free domain names that aren't blacklisted on google/fb/have
crappy uptime? :P I checked and a .com would only be like 10 bucks a year actually but I dunno..

Edit: I dont think .tk is blacklisted on google; DT's clrhome comes right up..

Also I tried fixing the box; it's facebook having crappy code, not me lol so I just made the title shorter so that it would fit in the box :P

We could probably get you a subdomain on omnimaga, or you should go for getting one from Juju

You have to go through a process to get it unblocked. It's highly annoying.

Hm, how can I tell if it's blocked or not? If it comes up on google at all (aka when i search "shakespearescomics.tk" LOL) does that mean it's actually fine?

I feel really dumb now.  I just got the most recent one (Punchline) after the third reread or so. :P  ..Idiot.

Edit:  I can't post a link to it on Facebook, however.  I think it's time to ditch the .tk. ;)

Right???? It's so annoying (For now you can refer them to the facebook page instead) . The problem is that my parents won't let me register a different domain until college apps are done (January). It's not like I don't have money but I don't have a way to pay for it online unless I can get $10 in donations through Paypal LOL Edit: I can actually link my bank account to my PayPal and hope that my mom is ok with it :P since I don't think it's realistic to expect any money from donations lol

Also I'm trying to work out an update schedule: I'm thinking Tues/Fri for now, and maybe increase the frequency once I have more time

You can do them early!
(I submitted two last night, finished one tonight, and only have half an essay to finish on my final one.)

See, I am also done (I've written practically all of my essays already: I have one 125 word one left :P) But I'm also applying to 11 schools -_-

My parents can be off sometimes, not as bad as sircmpwn's, but imo sometimes stricter than I'd like. I don't see any reason I shouldn't be able to spend my own money on something like a domain name...Anyway I actually haven't directly asked yet, maybe I'll finish up some app work this week and then see :P

^ Seconded. I like how the characters in xkcd reappear. It gives them character :)

Really? My site was never blocked ???

You are right, my apologies, google only blocks .co.cc not .tk
It seems facebook has blocked .tk though.

I'm thinking about regular characters like xkcd :D but first I need to polish up the artwork a little bit in order to make the characters a little bit more distinguishable.

Also I'll be able to get a .com domain name anyways, even if google doesn't block .tk it's still annoying to have it blocked on facebook.

I think it needs work.... it doesn't have a unique gag nor is it really witty at all.... and the price for a domain changes depending on the service.....

you should probably indicate what he should do to make it better, make your criticism constructive, instead of merely saying "it needs work".  How does it need work?  How can it improve?

oh, and I really like QC just because it has an ongoing story line, squidgetx, so I would suggest that.  ;)

Well, considering he gave the points that he didn't find the jokes witty nor did he find any hidden gag punchline, I think his criticism is constructive as it can be; it's rather hard to tell the joke maker what jokes to make, doing that ruins the creativity part.  It's no less constructive than the "LoL that waz funniez" posts.

I kinda actually agree with both of you here; while I would've like him to give examples, etc. Ashbad's right in that that's pretty much as much as he can say if he doesn't like it :P A lot of the jokes are a little subtle and they might need a few rereads (I should maybe make them more obvious?) and some of the earlier strips are only funny if you go to my school (namely, 'Schedule', 'Censorship' and 'New Carpet') so yeah :P I'll admit that some of them aren't amazing. Though I thought that a couple of them aren't too shabby...lol.

I'm not sure about keeping a storyline...I'll have to think about it.

I'm looking at a .com for ~10$/year but as of right now I dont know if I'll be able to get it soon :P

'Censorship'
Censorship is hilarious.  My school has a similar problem. ;)

Yeah, I think it applies to pretty much every school that have a firewall.

Yes I do and yeah Squidgetx I said crappy uptime because often .tk sites won't even respond at all. In the past, sometimes people would report that Omniurl.tk links wouldn't work at all on IRC. This seems less bad now, though, but dot.tk got its bad moments sometimes x.x

And they've got other issues too -- in the past few days both my domain and Freyaday's were suspended for "violating the terms of service," even though neither site did anything to warrant that label. A request for reconsideration fixed it nicely, but they seem to be having technical trouble :/

Yeah that too. Netham's was suspended too twice.

That sucks. But we can't do anything about it since it is a free service, as their ToS points out.

Are co.cc domains any better ?

Their system seems to be a lot more stable, but Google removes them from their index. If you want a site with Google hits, don't use it.

Another alternative is maybe ask Juju for a sub-domain or something. He only gives them to trusted members now but you are one, so yeah. :P
