Title: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 07, 2010, 05:59:41 pm
I hope this is legal to do according to the rules.

I am not good at all when it comes to sprite drawings.  So I was wondering if someone would help with sprites.  Basically, it's the sprites of the characters and the tiles for the tilemap.

Will anyone help with this?  I would be okay with grayscale sprites.

Thanks in advance.  I can PM with more details if anyone wants to help.

8x8 size, i'm assuming. what do you want the sprites to look like?
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 07, 2010, 06:09:58 pm
Actually, there all different sizes.  A character will be 16x16 in large form, and 8x8 in small form.  The one I want now is a 8x8 sprite of character.  It's basically a white robed wizard.  Can you do front, back, and side art for it?  I'm sorry to ask of so much, I'm just really bad at it.  For anyone curious, it will be the main character that you get to play as.

Thank you.  Would you be interested in doing more than this?

i suggest you post everything that you want here so everyone can see it. i'm not very good at pixel art, however, i will attempt later (my last final is this wednesday).
when asking for pixel art, try to be as specific as possible. some criteria to keep in mind:
-size
-monochrome/grayscale(3 or 4)
-general description
if you need to, describe the function in the game. usually not needed though.
if you can, try to post a link to a pixel art image similar to what you're looking for.

8x8 white robed wizard... I fail at sprite art too, but I tried.
btw they are monochrome.

Top Left: facing right
Top Right: facing left
Bottom Left: front
Bottom Right: back

Feel free to edit the sprites and modify as you see fit.

the side-ones may not be as good... i personally think they look more like a pope sprite. but here you go, all i ask is you give me credit (just say nemo of omnimaga did the main character sprites in the readme or something)

Yes, I'm definitely going to have to switch to 16x116.  Can you do a sprite for those?

Thanks for those who helped, btw.

8x8:
Clockwise from top left: right, left, front, back. Sorry the colors got a bit messed up. It's supposed to be black and white except for a gray cross to designate the border.

i'm not good at 16x16, but i'm sure if you just blew mine up to fit 16x16 and the modified it a bit, you could come up with your own.

Well I did come up with this one.  What do you think?

Copied these sprites from the Final Fantasy :P
And I couldn't draw the front and back sprites.

Here's an extension of jsj795's sprites:
Clockwise from top left: right, left, front, back. Sorry the colors got a bit messed up. It's supposed to be black and white except for a gray cross to designate the border.
Sorry they look somewhat like teletubbies.

EDIT: Oh, whoops, forgot about the arms. :D I'm really bad at sprite drawing.

EDIT2: Added hands. Trying desparately not to make it look like Laa Laa. :)

EDIT3: Edited again to make face and hands match the original. Large picture colors really corrupted, sorry. The small picture's fine, though.

EDIT4: Edited again (http://ourl.ca/6023/94297). Sorry if this is getting annoying :)

i really don't need credit, since I pretty much copied from Final Fantasy...
You should give it to Deep Thought since he made the front and back

Do we know who made Final Fantasy? I based it off of his characters (otherwise, I wouldn't have thought of such a chubby (in a good way) wizard).

And if you end up using this, I suggest lowering the hairline of the hood (for the front view) by one pixel. That way, it matches the side views. I don't have time to change it, sorry. Someone else could edit the picture for me, though. A word of caution to anyone who wants to do this: the colors are already screwed up, so be careful. :)

Wow nice sprites there. And I'm glad people are finally using this sub-forum :P (before, people would just request sprites inside their project threads and their requests would get lost because pîxel artists expected such requests to only appear in the Pixel art forum)

I got some wizard sprites but one has black robe and the other ones that could have done only faces one single direction

Which Final Fantasy were they taken from is the question. I'm pretty sure we could figure it out after that.

I took it from Final Fantasy I, the very first original one.

Graphmastur, I changed it again. Sorry if this came a bit late, but I was getting uncomfortable with the original. :)

I think he meant the one that was on the Nintendo Entertainment System, but yea, that linked program is an attempted remake of Final Fantasy.

I am reminded of 8 bit theater... :P
The linked game was okay in my opinion. Not the best, but decent for a calc.

True, I personally liked it compared to other calc RPGs but it had some annoying quirks, such as slow key detection in menus, not being able to cancel choices in battles and some bugs.

The version released prior that one wasn't too great, though. Key detection was even slower and game was nearly unplayable. Maps were not as good looking either (altough still quite good... more FF1 style actually.) and there were even more bugs.

It was still a nice job, though, considering RPGs are apparently a major PITA to code in ASM, especially when stuck with the 8 KB limit

So now I need 2 other sprites. One is a white fox. The other is something like a panther or tiger, and is drawn in black. Basically the white wizard transforms into this.

Thanks!

8x8 or 16x16?
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 09, 2010, 02:13:54 pm
Actually 24x24, or better yet, 32x32, along with 16x16.  That's for both of them. The large sprites only face one direction. Fox faces the right. The other, the left.

I'm just really bad at sprites.
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: Deep Toaster on June 09, 2010, 06:51:36 pm
Here's my version of a "fox". I didn't really use the space well, so there's a lot of empty space on top (wow, foxes are that short?).

Also, I updated the wizards again (sorry if this came really late). I think it looks better than before.

The colors are now no longer corrupted, but the pixels are all over the place (thankfully, this is only for the large pictures; the actual-sized ones are fine). Paint is getting really annoying  >:(

I was thinking kinda like the kyuubi, except with one tail, instead of 9, and white instead of red.

Kinda like this, except 1 tail, facing to the right, and without Minato (The guy in front) in it.  (Sorry it's big.  Is there a way to adjust the size of it?)

Usually the whole fox is red, that's why I chose this picture.  The whole red around his eyes and tale isn't necessary.  Thank you for the wizard Deep Thought.

The character idea actually came from the kyuubi....  That's all the spoilers you get for now!

Is there a way to adjust the size of it?
Code: [Select]
Avoid using to increase an image size, though. It looks terrible in Opera 10 or later.

I don't really know what the legs look like (they're just about blocked in the image), but here's my attempt (once again, I did not use the top portion well):
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 10, 2010, 01:06:50 pm
For the bottom one, the tail was done well, but can you do the legs better? I also think that the sprite should be facing forward now. (sorry, change of storyline).  The ears and face are nice too.
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: nemo on June 10, 2010, 01:17:01 pm
so 16x16 pixels? and you want the face to be facing the user of the calculator? monochrome?
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 10, 2010, 01:43:30 pm
16x16 in all four directions. 32x32 facing the user. Monochrome, btw.

Post by: nemo on June 10, 2010, 03:04:40 pm
side sprites 16x16. there are two sets, one of them has more detailed legs at the cost of a nice tail, and the other has a more voluminous (i won't say better because i couldn't get it to look how i wanted it to) tail with less detailed legs.

those looks nice, altough the last two by Nemo seems a bit skinny. I like TI-Newb one in particular, altough I would remove those two dots at the bottom to the left and right.
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: meishe91 on June 10, 2010, 10:38:36 pm
Ya, the two dots are a bit random. I do like it though, just wish it didn't look quite so 2D (no idea if that makes sense to anyone else besides me :P).

Sorry, but can you put that in .bmp format?  I can't read .8xi files.

Ya you can. .8xi is the picture format for calculators. So either pull up an emulator or put it on your calculator and just recall Pic6.

Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 10, 2010, 11:03:10 pm
I do, and that's the problem.  However, I transferred it, and it looks great.  The only problem is, that it needs to be more or less a white fox.  The sprite does look absolutely amazing.

Hmmm...  What's something that could be considered more "royal" than the fox.  Maybe a lion.  If you can do something like that, with an overall white color scheme, I can use the fox for the other character.  Can you do that Ti-Newb.  Granted I know you had some inspiration for the 1 tailed, but it still looks amazing.  Would you like to help me with all of the sprites?  You seem to be really good at them.

Thanks!

An eagle is also pretty majestic too, but I believe you're looking for more of a feline or canine.

ooh.. lol the dots are uhm.. just my borders.. LOL.. yeah il remove those.. So u want it just a pure white fox?. id love to help, but i dont think i can be very reliable considering i got exams for in 1 week. =O

EDIT: oh yeah, forgot to answer that other question.. Yeah, il try drawing a Lion.. Facing the same direction 32x32?
Title: Re: Sprite help for Axe game
Post by: jnesselr on June 10, 2010, 11:58:24 pm
Same direction, because I have to reverse the fox.  If you do that one, the white fox is not necessary.  But no white fox means a white feline.  The two characters just must be opposite color schemes.
