Basically what the question asks. I'm wonder which picture contains the sprite that looks most like water :)
Option Old:

Thanks for anyone's input :)

Hm, seems to be unanimous :)
-
I like the second, although option 3 looks identical to option 1 in my eyes O.O

I think #3 is #1 shifted up one pixel.
-
Ah i see. That really doesnt make much of a difference to see when they are tiled then :P Thats why i didnt notice
-
That really hurts my eyes o.O, perhaps post them on a smaller scale so its easier to tell the difference?
-
Well I updated it all to better pictures so they aren't as skewed so they are more uniform. Also provided the individual tiles for each one in case that helps :) Thanks everyone :D
-
Options 4 and 5 aren't added :P
-
I think No. 5 seems the most water like. I dunno it may be just me
-

Psh, what are you talking about? :P ;)
-
Lol, and that broke unanimity :P
-
hmmm, they all look relatively the same to me. Have you tried different styles of water? Like horizontal, wavy, darker, lighter, little pixels, marshy.
-
Personally, I think it's too dark and contrasted to look like water. What about something like the water used in Mario 2.0?
EDIT: Shouldn't this be in Pixel Art and Drawing?
-

Sorry :-X
-
Well I'm planning on using 3*5 pixel sprites so I don't know how many options I have unless I do one sprite then the other, which will complicate the tilemapper. I'm just not the best spriter and 3*5 doesn't leave a whole lot of options :P I know they all look similar.

I don't know. I just put it here since I put my character sprite here too. I just thought it should be since it's technically not TI-BASIC or assembly but it's still calculator related and such.
-
Oh, is this for BASIC?
-

The water in Mario 2.0 didn't look like water at all. It looked like dustbunnies floating in the air.
-

Ya, they are text sprites. But the language shouldn't really matter.
Also, added a sixth option.
-
For some reasons, I found #1 to look more water like. Next in my choice would have been #5

Heh, true.
I like #6 now because it's less contrasted. I still think it's kinda too vertical to look like water. Not much to do about that, though :P
-
I never actually got to see the water in 2.0 because I only tried 1.2. Back when I was still playing that game, 2.0 was taken off from ticalc.org and calcgames had yet to host it.
-
Oh. Well, basically, it was

or something like that, so yeah, it kind did look like conveniently patterned dust bunnies.
-
Ah I see. Did the water actually do much, anyway? In SM 1.2, I think this tile was there, but water did nothing special x.x. I wonder if the swimming effect looks good at all..
-
In 2.0, it just slowed Mario down.
It actually did look like swimming, at least, except that he seemed to be walking in the water :P
Also, water could float in the middle of nowhere. It was weird but fun :D
So, which one are you going to use (meaning for the sprite)?
-
Ah ok, lol. Yay for Project M :P
Anyway, I assume the water tiles will be for the game you were making, Meishe91, right?
-
@Deep Thought
Probably number six since it seems to be the favorite :) I'm still not 100% for sure though.
@DJ
Ya. Though I think I'm going to kinda ditch my old tilemapper and create a new one. I recently looked at Edge and kinda got inspired to try and make it look as good as I can. So I've been trying to figure out how I want to do all this. Probably should talk to Sir some.
-
Ah ok I see. In any case, good luck :)
-
Thank ya :)

Voting is now locked.

option 6 is the least eye hurting, and the most realistic. the wavy lines best represent it as the other ones look too 'thick' for water
-
Keep in mind that on calc it may look less eye-hurting, though, because the contrast between pixels turned ON and those turned OFF isn't as big. Also keep in mind that when on the calc, you got long columns of pixels going like this:
ON
OFF
ON
OFF
ON
OFF
ON
OFF
or to a lesser extent
ON
OFF
OFF
ON
OFF
OFF
ON
and so on, it doesn't give a very good result on the regular TI-83+ (black model). The contrast level for those columns will be much lighter than the rest of the screen and in some cases it may affect other portions of the screen. This particulary makes 3 and 4-level grayscale look extremly bad when the screen is filled with plain gray areas, but it is as bad with non-moving patterns.
This happens on other calcs as well, but not to such high extent. If you fill the entire 83+ LCD with checkered patterns, even at highest level 9, the LCD contrast looks like it has been set at level 6.
-
Ya, those screenshots aren't really the greatest either since it isn't on the normal greenish-yellow background, which would more correctly demonstrate the effect. I accidentally came across another pattern that looked kinda cool but I haven't tested it yet or anything.
-
Nice, please share it :D
-
If I get time I will :) And if I remember the design :P
Edit:
Ok, so here is that new design I came across. It's basically like option six but it's doubled, if that makes sense.

-
I kinda like that one more actually. What do other people think?
-
Ya, I like it too. I'm stuck between that and six :P I'll reorganize the poll to include those two and see what people think :)
Edit:
Reopened and reordered :)
-
Im totally down with the new one :D Looks great!
-
Yup, I like the new one.
EDIT: Unanimity again! :D
-
Well yay for mistakes happening then :P
-
It was an accident? :D Well, that's great, anyway!
-
Haha ya, I had two copies of my display program where one was set one pixel to the right and forgot one of them didn't have a ClrHome at the beginning so it just went right over the other. Unfortunately that tile was impossible so I just shifted it up a pixel :P
-
Voting locked. Went with the new one :)
-
Cool :D, I liked it personally. Good luck on the game
-
Thanks.
-
I liked the tird one. It would be good for ocean water. The first one though would be good for like a lake.

The "tird" one?
-
third, he means. However the third image is gone x.x
I guess he probably lurked on the forums long before signing up and saw the images before you edited the poll.
-
Ya, that's what I assumed he meant but it confused me since there isn't a third option anymore. But that makes sense.
-
Um. No I just looked back at earlier posts and saw it. It's on the previous page.
Forgive me if I make any spelling errors. Im using a crappy laptop keyboard,
-
The only one that is in the posts though, besides the original post, is the second option. So I'm not sure what third option you see. But oh well.
-
hmm the options are different and both are good, i think the new one is better now
anyway meishe91, there used to be 6 options and those have now been narrowed down to 2, i think.
-
Anyway :P I think he made people vote for 6 options, but then he had another idea and decided to make a new poll out of the winner and the new idea. However I think he made his mind about 3 weeks ago. :P
-
Ya, what DJ said. Though haven't worked to much on it lately :(
-
Id have to say the second one, but I dragged the first image over the other and I found that looks alot more water-like.

-
What do you mean? This is pure TI-BASIC so I can't do gray.
-
Yeah it was meant to be pure-BASIC so gs is out of the question. Btw I hope you continue working on this again soon :)
-
Ya, me too. I've just been so stressed and tired lately. I haven't had a whole lot of time, well at least the mind to do a lot.
-
Sorry to hear, I hope you feel better soon x.x
-
Thanks. things should be better after the next couple weeks. That's when things start to cool down with the musical and everything.
