Title: Colored Names
Post by: Netham45 on April 16, 2011, 05:16:45 am
I implemented colored names using X-Chat 2's coloring algorithm, but I'm not entirely sure if I like them or not. Opinions?

(You may need to clear cache/refresh to see them)

I like it already. No question. Colored names are always good for me.

Nice, how do you change your own?(If you can)

Hmm personally I don't like it, it looks too unfitting with the site. :( I would prefer with no colors personally

I like the colours, but I think the XChat algorithm isn't ok, what about a colour for mods, a colour for managers and a colour for users and a colour for lobsters? :P

Also some of the colors are really bright.

Could you at least give the option to disable them and maybe just go through a certain set of colors that would match the site theme? For example on TIMGUL every post count group had a different shade of blue.

Also have you tested if it's demanding or not on CPU load, noticing Ashbad's issue?

I like them, actually. Can you give explaination about how the colors work?
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 16, 2011, 10:20:00 am
From what Netham45 said it's based on X-Chat's color algorithm. However I'M not sure if it's the same.

If so, I think I would like colors based on member groups more. However, that might be slower cuz it has to search in the member database. (Its all IMO/AFAIK)

colors no good!  Sorry if I crash the party, but after all these nice new updates, I can't access the site unless DJ disables omnomIRC for me. :(

Colors good! Well, not the current ones.  I think it should be based on whether you are admin/cot/anti-riot/lobster.  Also, we need to have an acronym for that.  caral? maybe?
C: Coders of Tomorrow
AR: Anti-Riot Squad
A: Admin
L: Lobster

I agree with Graphmastur: Each group as a colour, and all members have the same colour (Bad for me :P).

So far, nobody has issues, so I guess it's a client thing, have you tried rebooting?

I haven't had a chance to look yet, but I like the idea. Also, could there be a special loli color?

Title: Re: Colored Names

Personally I really doN't like the chosen colors. I'm starting to get used to having colors, but I think we should only have the following ones:

nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname  nickname  nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname nickname

THat way it matches the site design more.

Otherwise, use the staff group ones.
Title: Re: Colored Names

Perhaps admins could use
Code: [Select]
[b]TEXTto bold so they are better heard when wanting to warn someone?
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 16, 2011, 01:53:05 pm
THat could work, although that is done via IRC usually anyway, since to ban we have to be there.
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Juju on April 16, 2011, 02:26:46 pm
Yeah, I would rather like either the nicks are not bolded (while leaving the xchat color scheme), the colors matches our status on the website (green CoT/blue admin/red ARS/pink lobster), the rainbowy scheme DJ suggested, or any combination of the three.
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Darl181 on April 16, 2011, 02:29:50 pm
I like the colors, but the bolding's kind of distracting...
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 16, 2011, 02:31:36 pm
Yeah non-bold nicks would be better, and also have IRC nicks prefixed with their appropriate modes. Maybe have the forum ones have the o logo too because now it's hard to distinguish who's talking from IRC or not.

As for my color scheme I really meant these colors, no red, orange, yellow-ish colors.

Personally, though, I would even go with no color altogether.
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on April 16, 2011, 03:18:33 pm
I agree with the fact that the colors don't fit with the site. But if you have the same colors like in the forum:Lobsters pink(actually preferably not, because I oppose that color ;) ) and admins their color, etc.. Maybe some exceptions because otherwise its almost the same like it was before.

(offtopic: DJ_O, could you CONSIDER making me a lobster :P ?)

I've tried in 7 different browsers, and after the latest updates it wasn't until DJ blocked me from OmnomIRC that it would load correctly... I would prefer not to be blocked from omnom forever.  So, until it can be fixed, I can't use omnom :P

I don't wanna be rude, but it's kinda more important that you get it working for everybody before you keep adding new stuff -- just think if we started making games we create here available only for residents on the east cost of america -- and just add fancier stuff to it rather than allow the others to even access it.  How would those who live in europe or texas feel? :(

again, not trying to be rude.

You're the only person I've heard who's been having any issues getting to it.

Could you try hitting http://netham45.org/irc/efnet/view_omnom.php?log=omnimaga&trim=17 and let me know if it goes through?

Also, what version of what browsers, what OS, system specs, extensions, etc...?

I have all browsers with the cache reset 3 times and updated to the very latest versions, running on a Vista computer with 1GB RAM.  That's all I know X.x

and, broken link ;)

it works the same way with the errors before :( it does show in chrome, but has really weird refreshing flickers that look horrible, and still does not allow me to post in IRC.
Title: Re: Colored Names

What kind of internet connection are you behind? I think they might be caching it.
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Ashbad on April 16, 2011, 05:02:59 pm
hm... no idea, some really bad wireless thing from a modem, just one step up from Dialup :(

And, it hasn't ever had these problems before in case you're wondering.
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Netham45 on April 16, 2011, 06:16:09 pm
Yea, but these problems might be caused by two different versions of OmnomIRC loading at once.

Do you know the name of the company that provides your internet?
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: willrandship on April 16, 2011, 06:31:38 pm
DSL? Hmm. I doubt it's router caching problems, then. I have a DSL connection and it transitioned fine, and believe me, they won't give you a fancy router/modem for a cheap DSL connection.

Maybe try another browser? i.e. chrome, FF, IE, opera, and see if it works in them.
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Netham45 on April 16, 2011, 06:58:15 pm
He did already.

I think his ISP might be caching it somewhere down the line. You don't have any internet accelerators or anything installed, do you?
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: willrandship on April 16, 2011, 07:16:23 pm
Good point, but I seriously doubt the ISP would do that. Caching creates many issues for both clients and Admins.

What could cause OmnomIRC to lag so much since 8 PM yesterday when it was working perfectly for Ashbad before, though?

I think he has tried all browsers, since he has said that before.

Could someone in his family have used his computer while he's away and got a virus? O.O

Perhaps he could try a different OS too, but I guess that's too much trouble.

I dunno. I'm just trying to track down if it's his ISP somewhere or not.

but, on that note, when was the last time you scanned for viruses, ashbad?
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 17, 2011, 06:18:35 pm
Ah ok.

In any case, do you think there would be a solution, including reinstating a copy of the old OmnomIRC just for him (in the alternate member group)?
Title: Re: Colored Names
Post by: Ashbad on April 17, 2011, 09:48:42 pm
I run a virus scan every week, I ran one today and I found nothing :(

But, if it would be possible to get an old version of OmnomIRC for me (like about a week old) that would be superb :)

Well... sometimes viruses won't get detected until like 6 months later, though, or sometimes Adware will detect stuff, but not Avast/AVG. That said, I hope you don't use Norton, though, which is pretty much a virus by itself. :P

All virus software is like a virus IMHO.  That's why I don't have virus software on my computers.  I usually handle all issues myself.

@DJ: I can, if we don't get this solved. Even if I do, though, I still want to find out why it's bugged out for Ashbad, it could possibly be affecting other users too, though I haven't heard any other reports.

Ashbad, do you have another computer you can try?

Well in some cases it can be a bit helpful for those who are less tech-savy and get caught by searching stuff on Google. Just falling on a shutted down French site that changed into a squatter domain page can get you a virus. However, when searching info for your next essay, you don't know that the link you're about to click is filled with malware.

Same thing if a site you frequent gets hacked. People got viruses on WikiTI after all...

That said, if you avoid clicking links to sites you don't trust you should be fine most of the time.

Thanks, saw it now.

EDIT: I don't know if this is because of the colored names, but I switched it on, typing didn't worked. Switched it off, typing still didn't work.
I tried another browser and I still have the same problem: Everything I type in omnomirc isn't displayed.

I was wondering if it was possible to...
A) have the nicks in color but without bold
B) change own nick color.  I keep thinking I'm highlighted b/c my nick is bright red :P

If not A, then
C) less intense colors (http://ourl.ca/10436/198991) would be great

Try clearing your cache first (http://ourl.ca/10749), then if that doesn't work, Try hitting the english/french button on top a couple times

A) have the nicks in color but without bold

Done.
