Title: 5TD
Post by: cooliojazz on January 23, 2011, 01:22:34 am
Well... Itsa game.  Written in java.  It's 4D, with a 3D engine.  You can swap the Y and W dimension.  Me and my friend are attempting to finish it for a competition in a few weeks.  Itsa puzzle game of sorts.  I'll fix a couple things, then post a version people can play around with if they wish.  I really didn't know what to say, as should be evident... Oh!  This is what has been consuming 95% of my free time for the last monthish.  It doesn't look near far enough for that though... =P

Interesting, do you have any screenshots? I can't wait to try it :D

Okay, here's the files.  Quick controls:
WASD - Move
Space - Switch dimensions
Esc - Pause
For now, ignore how the buttons and screens look, those are by me, because my friend, being the one who can make things look decentish, is slacking off right now =P
Yes, the start area for this map is confusing with it being small and having the black circle tile thing on all sides =P Just toy around with it right now, it's so buggy, putting it out right now is actually probably detrimental, but oh well =P

Both files gives me an invalid URL error. ???

EDIT: Thanks for fixing but now the game gives me a Could not find the main class j5td.Main. Program will exit. It happens with both 32 and 64 bits versions. I use Windows 7 64 bits btw.

Sorry, fixed that.  Also, make sure to extract all files before running :P

How do you run it?
Title: Re: 5TD
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 23, 2011, 03:14:02 am
Oh I see, it's extract-dependent. You should specify that in the readme because today most softwares won't require extracting to run properly, so most people run them from the zip file.

However even after extracting I get a blank screen...

Qwerty, Just run the jar.  DJ, are you on 32bit?  Because I'm running on a 64bit, so I can't just make sure I inclded the right files for 32 by running it, im just going by the last time i tested it on my friends machine =\

Yeah, I tried the .jar and it brought up a blank screen.

Qwert, try the opposite version.  I think i may have reversed themm or something... note that it takes around 5 seconds for it to stop being whit at first =P

Yeah for me only the 32 bits one works. Also it seems nice, although sometimes I seem to get stuck while moving because wasd will suddently stop responding until I restart the game.

I guess the objective is to move around and warp between two rooms to get out, without getting trapped in walls?

Oh, since it's Java, it's supposed to work on every operating system Java has been ported on right?

Yep.  Unless you use something that needs libraries, which end up being specific for each system.  No worries, I'll set it up so it automatically grabs the right one etc at runtime, but for now, im more worried about other things =P

Okay I got it to work. Walked around a bit in a dark room and then the words GAME OVER appeared. What did I do?

umm, did you happen to not extract the Startarea.tdm file?  Because at that point, it would have loaded a blank map, at which point you would fall to your death =P if you did... That's odd XD

Good luck Cooliojaz on fixing some of the issues D:

Feel free to ask help in this sub-forum if you need any (if it's allowed by the contest)

No I was in the room with the blue circles and I think I was backing into a corner when I died.

There might be a reason I decided to keep the abbreviation from the original concept of 5 Time Dimensions. =P
And z80man, then you have proof of concept at how non colliding my collsion detection is, as you fell through blocks I guess, because falling off the map is the only way to trigger a "game over" atm =\

That reminds me, in Quebec now they changed the name from STD to STI (sexually-transmitted infections). Not sure when the change happened, though, since in school we still called them STD's before I graduated. :P But now we're getting off-topic. :P
Title: Re: 5TD
Post by: Juju on January 24, 2011, 04:29:23 am
Yeah, they figured out one time that "infection" was more appropriate than "disease", since you can get things that aren't really diseases.

And yeah that's so off-topic. What is this I don't even. And now, back to our regularly scheduled program. :P

I guess that was inevitable with the project name, though. Someone was gonna bring it up anyway. :P

I think Cooliojazz name choice was intentional for that purpose, though. :P (kinda like when I named a pseudo-3D racing engine Project Omega: Race Ngine)

Nice name DJ :D

Well, it's always fun to hide some jokes in rather serious projects. :P

Ok, I didn't feel like spamming this topic with all the super small changes I made as I went along, but here we go, this version works at 95%, with 5 levels.  To start it, just choose the right version (Note, it depends on your jre version, not necessarily hardware, as you can run both 64 and 32 jre on a 64 bit machine), extract, and run the jar. This is going to the dl for a while, as I'm tired of working on it, and the rush is done as it competes tomorrow, but I'll pick it back up sometime.  Probably.  I might continue to work on it anyways =P read older post for controls and stuffs.  Yeah, Can't think of anything else, I'll edit if I do.

Pretty good, I quite enjoyed it. It started out a little hard because you can't really see where you are going for the first two levels. After that it got more challenging, but easier to see. I got stuck though on the level with the big spiral staircase(I wasn't sure how to get on the platform, and the game then froze) Anyways it was a great game with a good music selection too. Keep up the good work.  ;D

How do you move around? WASD isn' working.
Title: Re: 5TD
Post by: cooliojazz on February 11, 2011, 09:38:24 pm
Umm, it should be WASD... I dont know why that wouldnt work... I've never even had any sort of hint of a problem with that...

wow...
nice!

I have just a little problem...
...I lose myself often enough in 3D games already
So 4D is a real challenge...

Nice. I was a bit confused sometimes but I got through a few levels at least.

By the way why did the music suddently started 4 minutes into the game in the very middle of a level? Another thing is that step noises stopped working after level 1.

Post by: cooliojazz on February 12, 2011, 11:29:52 pm
shrear, yeah, though we didn't present the "4d aspect" in the best way =P
DJ, did they? thats odd... I probably know why =( And yeah, a song plays every 3-4 minutes, not timed to levels =P
Title: Re: 5TD
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 13, 2011, 04:02:33 pm
Ah I see, kinda like in Minecraft, then.

Btw, oddly enough this time the step noises continued working O.o. However I wonder how to beat the following level? ???

EDIT: for some reasons Fraps recorded the entire sound from the computer including the music I was listening to X.x. Normally it only records sound from the window it's capturing...
Title: Re: 5TD
Post by: cooliojazz on February 13, 2011, 05:35:10 pm
Umm, yeah, the 5th level *might* be unbeatable, as it seems the person who was making the maps didnt know there was a limit on the height and stuff, so he made it necessary to be able to go slightly outside the map to jump onto that top platform at the end of the level. So if you make it to the top of the spiral stairs, consider it beat =P
