OMG fun game you have here, I ended up playing 6 times >.< keep up the good work on those game! Only one report: in the readme it says A is to jump, and S to shoot. However in the game its S to jump and A to shoot you may want to fix that ;)wink.gif

Oops...I suppose it won't matter by the next update as the controls will be changed.  Here was what i was thinking, use 'z' 'x' and 'c' instead of 'a' 's' and 'd', make it so if you hold shift your weapon will continue to aim in the same direction, and press space bar to launch a secondary weapon (like a rocket or grenade or something...slow but with lots of splash damage.)

I sped up the gun's bullets and added more effects so far but have a few to replace still as the effects engine in game maker is a cpu hog and would be hard to translate into other programing laungages.

oooh that sound cool, will there be music too?
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on August 24, 2006, 03:25:00 am
Music is low priority, but probably, same with sound.  More than anything, it is hard finding music I think would go well with it that is in a nice loop and isn't to large of a file.

I plan to make a 'no-gore' version to, but as a big fan of blood...I have no plans of decreases in that area.  I do however have a mini-game almost done...my own version of fall down in it for the next release.

Game Maker ...I will recode it in a decent laungage when I get it further progressed.  It and other credits are in the readme.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 03, 2006, 09:14:00 am
still cool tho  apparently with game maker you can do lot of awesome stuff, someone did metroid game remake with it
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 03, 2006, 03:23:00 pm
It is easy to use, but it is a very bloated and high level laungauge.  IOW, it isn't going to be usable even on very modern computer for anything better than quake 1.

i c, well at least it do the job for smaller games
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 04, 2006, 05:13:00 pm
Well, here what is in the works on this game.  I am remaking all the enemies with some better AI and such, and will add in a sytem in which when they hit you they deal a finite amount of damage and have to wait a short period before they can deal more damage (kinda like invunerability, but only to the enemy that hit you) so as to make it easier to balance how much damage things do.  Also, I am going to replace the current powerup system with a actual weapon selection and like wise for the secondary weapons (which by the sounds of it, no one has gotten to play with yet.)  Further, armor type items will be available as you progress, and there will likely be an item forging system to allow you to have a lot of rpg like depth.  One thing I am not planning though, is exp or money drops as it causes people to play areas of the game repitively to try to exp harvest.  Also, perhaps you will get to see the pilot of the ball in future updates in a story line.

the inventory should be fully done and I plan to have at least a dozen equipable items.  One of the biggest focuses is on getting some better visuals in as this is getting no attention else where, likely for that reason.  No new sound or music is planned, but who knows.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 06, 2006, 01:32:00 am
:(sad.gif this game is cool I hope the other ppl will play it at least, some ppl are really strict when it come to PC games, they just want 3D graphics and all :Ptongue.gif

personally i still like 2D games as well
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 07, 2006, 04:19:00 pm
well, i think they more disliked it because, from the screenshots, it doesn't look like much.  Anyways, I have created an actual scripting system for the weapons so each is actualy just a set of variables and a peice of code will shoot the weapons diffrently due to these diffrent values (like a value for wether the weapon is an automatic (can hold down the trigger) or not (press for each shot), how fast and under what conditions the guns will reload (because I am not using amo for the weapons) and so on.  Also, you can both find weapons and build them with various parts if you have a blue-print for it, which you get from various data canisters throughout the game (each of which has some overlapping blue prints, but each also contains at least one unique component meaning all will be needed for absolute completion) and so on (oh, getting a weapon will give you a blue print for it, but not nescisarily all of its parts).

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 08, 2006, 02:12:00 am
nope still stuck in level 3, i always die when trying to kill all enemies above the cover, assuming i need to kill them to get to next level
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 08, 2006, 05:30:00 am
yes...stay at the very far right and wait for all the discs and wisps (bouncing things) to come after you, then shoot at the up and down 'shooters', then shoot the arachnas, then jump onto the platforms to go to the upper left and with cover shoot the last shooter.  Always use cover when you have it as there is no time limit and you have very little armor/health.

my problem is that I have problems shooting in diagonal,I always end up moving and fallling all the time
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 13, 2006, 05:21:00 pm
damned...I am hitting some bumps on this including graphics complications, Trying to make an external inventory system and item list is a real b**** to program with how unfamilar I am with some of the program launge, however, by the time I figure it out all the way I might be able program external levels for necro's puzzle.  I wish I could have met my deadlines but it looks like the next version won't be out for at least a few weeks.

On the plus side, there will be a LOT of improvements over the previous version.
Title: combat ball
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 14, 2006, 01:16:00 am
hmm external levels? Do I hear lv editor here? that would be cool! I hope you can fix the other stuff soon
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 14, 2006, 01:18:00 pm
Not for combat ball as it is a story/mission based game, but necro's puzzle, yes!  I can think of external level loading easy, I am still trying to think of a good way to write levels besides by hand to a file though...

I didn't bother releasing an update because I want a level editor (even if the engine is a bit incomplete) for people to play with.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 15, 2006, 12:27:00 pm
w00t I cant wait, I'm sure it will be easier to make levels for PC version as you could even make it point/click with the mouse
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on September 18, 2006, 06:03:00 pm
ok, I have finaly got the inventory system mostly working meaning this update is getting close.  I still need to get parts of it done yet, but...eh, tis difficult to try and work with code like this to the level of controll I want.  The next release will also have a new secondary weapon, the grenade, besides the rocket launcher nobody seems good enough to get to as well as new primary weapons.  Ph, now I have all kinds of sprite like effects and such that give the game a nice graphical boost...and I will have some of the basic textures in the next update.  I may decide to forgo the blue-prints and combination system as it seems like it might add unnescicary hassle and complexity...at the very least it will be removed from the next version.

next release will be very soon, finishing up a few last graphics and building new levels that people will find easier.  BGs, effects, gore, menu, and hud visual bling will be much nicer looking I hope.

well, I plan to get the next version out this week!  I can't believe how much I've added but I still won't get a chance to play with some of the new stuff I am putting in it till the next version yet.  If you are curious, here is a screen of a level I quickly editted
user posted image
that background moves, I made a new better/longer song for it (sorry kev, still not megaman-esque) as I work on the old song and another one, have 13 items and weapons you can try out, obviously I have new bg and tiles (poorly implemented in that picture) and effects, menu that isn't fully done yet, some other stuff...yay.

Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on October 01, 2006, 01:52:00 pm
yes, I made the floors and the reason there are still some black walls was my laziness...I just added a shotgun as well.  I have a paper due thursday and a few labs this week, otherwise I could probably addmore goodies.  I have a whole list of enemies to change...I plan to replace them with an actual scripting system some time soon (like the item and weapon system) to speed development

well, in this screenie (which has some distortion) you can see the new hud and some new stuff (batteries and a socket for instance) as well as another one of the new bgs and more tiles.  These new enviroment chunks of crap won't be in the next release (they are still buggy) but the pushable battries can fall into slots, where they can triger other things to happen...a number of other items that can fall also now exist but can not be pused around and are also buggy  -_- .  A number of new tiles, some more effects yet (flames, blood dripping from impaled creatures, etc)

Hey this is pretty neat! I think it would be cooler if you made the ball roll though. :oohmy.gif You could do it like, an animated gif sprite of rolling-ness where the animation speed depends on teh ball speed and stuff. Give it fancy physics too like, acceleration for the ball and bouncing and stuff. :)smile.gif

btw necro i think you should use bg 2, it look even better than the other one
Title: combat ball
Post by: necro on October 06, 2006, 06:24:00 pm
well, I have added yet more bg tiles (and probably will continue doing so until the final version ;)wink.gif ) as well as gotten 3 new levels fully done (with all the features used in them).  I am still working on a number of things (like fixing the collisions on certain things, adding swinging crap, etc., some new enemies, more weapons, blah blah blah)...but those will all be next version if I didn't mention that already.  I am thinking about instead of trying to feature all of the weapons on diffrent levels, lust throwing in a code after you beat the game to try out them all and be able to play the game again on a harder mode.  Thoughts before I get the demo uploaded?

w00000t! finally I'm dlling now!

EDIT: I saw you made a fall down game it was cool, you should make the walls scroll up tho like the blocks to make it feel more like the ball was falling. nice game tho, now I'll try the other one and add both in the archives!

EDIT 2: I love combat ball so far! I got to level 2 but hopefully i should be able to get further soon. How do you save the game btw? I noticed in the first post save/load was implemented

I added the games to the archives btw :)smile.gif

You have to get a save point (they are green and t shaped devices) and when you jump on it it will prompt you.  Thereis one on level 3 and one after boss 1 that I can recal (the game has only 6levels I think)

slowly right now as i have more pressing time restraints on other projects.  When I finish them, I think I may change the direction I am going with some of this as I might be making it over complex and all.  Complex+Action=?

Well, combat ball is progressing in case you guys did not know.  Currently, a number of new features exist and I am tweaking a few more.  Besides new effects like lava, new enemies, and status ailments, I have added intros screens for necro studios (which I will be reviving shortly) and omnimaga, as well as a number of game demos built into it for my other games, and JOY PAD SUPPORT!!!!!!  I am adding this feature mainly as I now have a joy pad, and the joy pad support is as follows.

The game can use one analog stick to aim, the other to move, and all actions (jump, act, primary fire, secondary fire) will be reflected both in the face buttons (assuming 4 exist) and shoulders (again, assuming 4).  The dpad will be identical to the keyboard in its usage (combo of movement and aiming).  I hope to fully tweak this soon, also, I will try to make it customizable but I make no guarantees in that regard.  So, in other words, this is just another option I am adding to the game.

some more new features are exploding and toxic barrels, crates, and a few others things.  I hope to fix some of the last major bugs soon.

well, I now have hspeed internet and the next up date will be soon.  i have cut the joystic support to fix a major and catostrophic error until I can fully isolate and fix it...the rest of the game has been consistently stable.  Some new things I am adding last minute are demos, some HUD and menu changes, I hope to add a "monsterpedia" that will update as you play, and death animations for enemies.

lol yeah i noticed too, i hope he ddidnt decided to quit omnimaga as well, like http://omnimaga.org/index.php?showtopic=906 :(sad.gif

as for religious debate i think necro knows well that they can be controversed, because he never post any here, since he know we do not allow discussion that can lead to flaming. Idk why he post about them on MC forums tho, maybe because some people love to debate. Anyway i hope he come back here soon

well, I just found out about a way to add alpha to sprites, and the first thing i managed with it was adding much better looking smoke effects, still wish I had more time on them...I won't be able to do much more with it before the realease though, and i still have to fix some collision errors, a bug I just discovered which casues the green rotators to spill thousands of mini rotator enemies and slow down/crash the game, need to get the new pause menu fully up, build set of easy and a set of hard levels.  After that, I think this will be the last update till I can get a demo out for rain drops.

its for windows but proably won't run on a windows 98 or older machine due to the lack of 3d acceleration game maker requires.

well, I am making a slight release delay (again) as I add improved effects, and also because I am having a lot of difficulties on upload speed with my new wireless router (why did my dad need to mess with it?).  So, in the mean time, here is a screeny that has bad resolution.

shows off new explosion effect to the left (much nicer than the old one, still needs editing though the flaws are very hard to see at its speed) and there is improvement in the rising smoke effect (I use a lighter smoke color for lighter back grounds).  Going to fix up the lava steam while I wait, sorry for the technechal difficulties.

That looks awesome!  :thumbup:google.gif

When do you expect to have this finished (I'm really looking foward to this)?

I have no idea when it will be "finished"...as far as version 0.8a, it was supposed to be out a while ago but school has been slowing me down and making the largest chunk of the game, the levels, take a very long time (not that having freinds and learning a lot isn't worth it).  Hopefully within the next few weeks it will be out with all the bells and whistles I wanted to add.

When the new version comes out, I will change my avatar color (green to red) as a heads up.

Well, still trying to finish 0.8a but I have been slowed down by, among other things, school and trying to find a job.  I plan to rebuild the game engine after .8a because there are a number of irritating problems from some of the old code that is very hard to fix and is in general not allowing the game to develop very fast.  One of the biggest problems was I did not plan well enogh for a number of features and so forth...

I am realy sorry about all the delays, I rarely get to work on it right now but I hope that things will get better.

naa dun worry about delays and stuff like that. this is one of the few projects that have constant updates these days so delays and stuff dont really bother me nun. besides, errors and the like that arent truly under your conroll arent really your fault.
