Please vote here for your favorite ideas for the coding battles contest. For more information on the contest go here http://ourl.ca/16662/312138
This poll will run for 3 days then whatever topic is winning will become the topic for the first Coding battles. If anyone believes that any of these should have a different time limit then 3 weeks please say so.
My guess is that snake and tetris could be done in 10 days
i would also guess the IRC bot for managing channels could be done in a week
Otherwise I think 3 weeks would be reasonable development time for the rest
-
Can we vote even if we won't participate to the contest (I don't know any computer language :-\) ?

Yeah, I'm not a computer programmer too.
-
Depending on when it is I might not participate because of stress going to the us.....
-
Hmmm, i want 3weeks for all of it, i still have to learn c xD
But there are going to be more then 1 contest? Then it's ok, then i'll just practice till i do one of them
Ps: i will participate, but prolly won't have time to complete it :P
-
May you enter something that you started before the contest began? (or reuse parts of some old code you coded)
EDIT: I can't change what I voted for D:
-
@stevon8ter me neither I was hoping for a team so I dont have to spend all my time on it.
No you do not have to compete to vote this is supposed to represent what the community as a whole thinks the contest should be on.
EDIT: I dont see any way to change it so that people can revote you might want to ask an admin how to do that.
-
I voted :w00t:
Would it be possible to have maybe three votes. Like the top two or three ideas you'd like to see?
It's somewhat difficult choosing just one :P
-
I'll change it to two votes and maybe if two are tied/close both can go. though I think that might bet chaotic.
EDIT: nvm I dont see how to change it without resetting the poll so it will stay like this for this time
-
Eh, I think we'd just have to choose one or the other in case of a tie. I could whip up a quick randomizing program in case of a tie.
-
always rng's. I have a few lying around also :P
Also @Sorunome <OmnomIRC> (O)<Deep Thought> ruler, click the link that says Change Vote
it seems there was an option i forgot to enable DT enabled it though so it should work now
-
Yay, but I can only vote for a single category still :/
-
I like the idea of a bot that plays games. I would participate in that.
-
Ruler, maybe team up with me? xD and if we still can't finish it, who cares? :P
But i don't know if i'm being much online for the coming weeks, with my studentjob... But i'll just but some energy-drinks so i'm not tired when getting home ;)
And i'll think i'm going to vote too
-
changed my vote to irc bot game :D

Depending on what the project is sure I'll work with you. What languages are you good at/want to use for the contest?
-
Euhm, i only know html, css, some php, ti 84 basic, c# and i'm gonna learn c and c++ on the way (i learn really quick)
-
Then if its one I'd do in C/++ we can work together if its an IRC bot though I'd rather do it in python which you don't know.
-
Ok
No problemmo amigo xD
-
Just to be sure, a IRC Bot that plays/manages games would be one you play a game with over IRC?
-
yes. It would manage an IRC game. It would have to be all text interface.
-
Ah, ok then.
/me already has a few ideas >:D
-
Actually voted for music creation software.
-
lol, i thought you'd vote for music DJ ^^
Ah, ok then.
/me already has a few ideas >:D
/me bets he has more awesome ideas

lol We just need to be careful we don't get too set on one idea, then suddenly another category is voted into place :P
Best to keep a few laying around :D
-
I have ideas for a few just not for all of the ones with votes :P
i'll wait for the victor to be decided before thinking too hard on what to do though
-
Since these will be reused, I might start entries for the more popular ones. :P
If I get a good enough idea, I may start a project regardless of if it's the category or not XD
Edit: 1000th post!
-
I'd prefer that you not start till the voting finishes though in case the one you start on wins. it wouldnt be fair if you got a headstart on it.
And if you get a good idea for a project you should always at least look into making it happen.

I meant just getting the base things down like media, not starting on the actual game portion of the code :P But I agree
-
I think it would be interesting to see people compete on making maze-themed games. It would offer a fair amount of variety in what people could make and it would also be something that could be made fairly quickly.
-
I think IRC game would be awesome because it doesn't only require programming scills, but also imagination, as you are very limited.
-
Maybe a RPG-style IRC bot game, that could be interesting.
-
If IRC bot ever happens, just please do not test your stuff in #omnimaga. <_<
-
Yeah, a dedicated channel for the bot, that's what I always do so I won't disrupt conversations in existing channels.
-
Come on we need at least one more vote to break the tie
Though if there is a tie how should I handle it?
-
Hmmm, i would say: new poll between the ties, so all the remaining voters who did vote on something else now have only choice between the ties...
-
^you stole my idea! >:(
Well, i'd do it that way too :P
-
We have 3 close contenders and about 10 hours to go we'll see whether we have a tie then
yeah i think a quick(1 day) poll between the two would decide it
-
Just noticed, suddenly the irc bots are leading, maybe we won't have a tie :P
EDIT: How much time will we have again for coding?
-

Roughly 3 weeks
-
Yes we have 3 weeks for coding and unless someone makes it a tie in the next few hours teh irc bot seems like its going to win so start thinking of ideas
-
Will we be allowed to reuse some old code we made (like the basic irc connection) or shall we start everything from scratch?
-
You are allowed to reuse old code as long as it is not more then 15% of the code
See the FAQ on the Contest Thread and it should answer most of your questions
Also poll closes in <1 hour so get ready to start and get your final vote in
-
By the way, a suggestion I have for the next contest is that it excludes any IRC-themed contest themes, then the 3rd contest poll excludes any theme similar to the 2nd one, while bringing back IRC-themes except the specific one chosen in the 1st. Just to make sure that every contest are not just IRC bots, in order to reach an higher audience (for example, most people prefer graphical games, especially with the flood of menu-based programs on Ticalc.org, of which maybe only two or three are good).
-
Yeah I agree with that. no IRC bots for the next one and then maybe not let them be so much of the voting next time. Maybe only one idea per genre of idea next time?
-
The next one could be about music as it almost tied with game IRC bots.
-
It isn't over yet, in 5 mins (if my clock is correctly)
-
The music idea will definitely stay on till next time. with 5 minutes left we will have to see who wins...
Then let the games begin
-
Lol
I can't program atm, it's 9:17 pm
And my parents don't consider programming as a hobby, they don't even accept the fact that it actually kinda is for school (later i'll study ict) fucking parents
-
here it's same time and i program anyways :P
for anyone who's looking for a server that allows fast reconnection, I use this one: efnet.port80.se
-
where can i find more info on the due date etc? since i'm willing to participate too :)
-
THE GAMES HAVE BEGUN THE CONTEST WILL END AUGUST 26th AT 2pm CST
...
Current Project Idea:
IRC bot that plays/manages IRC games. This is a text game that is run by a bot. If the admins approve it maybe there can be and omnimaga-games channel for the winner
-
Contest rules suggestion:
-If you advertise your bot game more than twice in 12 hours on IRC, you are automatically disqualified with no warning.
-If you are caught insisting so somebody plays your game (such as asking someone twice), you are disqualified with no warning too.
Because it's getting really annoying. X.X
-
I actually thought those things would be considered part of omnimaga's rules but yeah excessive advertising and insisting on people play it would be disqualification though maybe warnings would be in order for the advertising since it may just be them not realizing but insisting I agree should be auto disqualify
