Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: necro on March 11, 2007, 10:32:00 am
I wish I had time to be more active posting right now.  Progress on individual projects is slow right now save some interesting experiments and such...one thing I just got working was simple window in a window for all of my game.  Right now they can be moved and so forth and resized though I have limmited implementation for it.  It is still pretty primitive and will never be completely smooth (at least without an unjustifable tax on system resources) butthere you go.  I am also working on drop down menues and buttons and so forth.

And of course, I am spriting like crazy to try and move my things along.

this may mess up the context for the post following, but most of that stuff was outdated.

What do you guys think of the sprite change

from user posted image to user posted image,  I realy like the new cb and I think it conveys the concept of it a lot better (not a rolling ball for instance)

@liazon: the first one was and had the animation for the middle portion but I was to lazy to actualy save all of its frames as gifs and then

Well, while you wait for the update, how about a song?  New music for the new title which is now animated.

Well, thursady wednesday may be my last class till the end of the month, so yay for time, just two more finals.

Also added a new two layer rain effect between classes and it realy looks good IMO.  Just finishing up a few last things and making some better levels that won't make you feel like doing this user posted image (yes, I made the smiley to...)

Yeah that is definetly a better sprite and I am looking forward to that Rain Drops game. That titlescreen picture has already brought me into it.

Not the best screeny (slow and not a perfect loop), but I don't want to show too much more...when the next release comes I think you guys will be suprised.  Its taking just a little longer, but the end result should be worth it.

The rain looks good, although the looping kind of messes it up a little  :/confused.gif .

Any thoughts on the music?

I didn't want to spend a ton of memory for it, especialy since the smoke is randomised and would almost surely never match.

Yeah, the rain looks good, but the looping looks a little weird when the rain jerks positions (probably when it repeats the loop).
Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: graywolf on March 16, 2007, 11:58:00 am
Yes, it the sudden looping. Other than that, the image is nice! :)smile.gif

And the music reminds of Gameboy music; it's pretty good, actually.  :thumbup:google.gif
Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: necro on March 16, 2007, 04:46:00 pm
Just a note, right now its in GML6.1 which uses Direct X.  As that isn't usable on anythng but windows or windows emu, I hope to migrate to C++ with A open GL based graphics engine so I can port this to other OSes.  After this release, I will probably have to migrate out of GM as I don't have 7 registered, and I am getting a vista machine (on which GM 6 won't work).  So basicaly, after this release, the brunt of my efforts will be in building the whole game over again, and probably building a whole new suit of tools to work with.
Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: Liazon on March 17, 2007, 06:45:00 am
No worries.  It sounds like C++ and OpenGL will allow for even more impressiveness when all's said and done. :)smile.gif
Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: necro on March 17, 2007, 08:09:00 pm
Believe me when I say it will likely be very time consuming/difficult as c variants are rather inflexible in the way they do their variables and the fact graphics are far more complex.  That aside, some news on current progress.  Added spark effects to the new pulse energy gun (since people disliked the old pistol, and since it just makes more sense for the ball to use energy weapons) and I added new lasers that cause massive damage and can't be crossed (have to turn them off) as well as a few breakable things.  Level design is slow as the levels are generaly rather complex.

Just got a new power adapter for my notebook so progress resumes.  Lost a few days and I wish I had more done...plan to cut a few pointless touches to get it done a bit faster.  Sorry for the delay.

well, the applications type stuff I am working on I might be able to make into a seperate dll or something and is going to be used in a number of apps I am making, however, I am not going to talk about them untill I actualy get an early version for them.

And besides, that project was basicaly just me applying a new set of sprites of the cb engine and testing a few effects that I already have managed to recreate and incorporate into cb.  So basicaly, what I lost was a set of graphics that imo, aren't as good as what I can do now and a few ideas.

Its a set of menu, move-able size-able window, button, drag and drop, and so on standard routines to allow for easier app development.  Kinda like visual basic inside of game maker games, though these are just scripts.  That said, making things like ide's and level editors and so forth would be far more easy with this.  And of course, I alos am making a few apps using these routines, which are progressing as nicely as can be expected.

Well, on the cb front, still working towards another demo.  I hope to resume progress on this very soon.  A level editor with a custom level format unlike the game maker default has been quite time consuming to make, but hopefully it will be done enough to continue working on the demo soon.

well, i have finally got file loading and saving done, now I need to finsh making a data parser to seperate the headers and object data, otherwise my files would be much larger huge to have for each object code for creation.  Basically, this is string manipulation on a grand scale.
Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 23, 2007, 11:20:00 am
is loading/saving very hard to implement in game maker?
Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: necro on August 23, 2007, 07:52:00 pm
Only if you aren't using the built-in which saves most of the basic room elements (objects and their data, global data, tiles, view location, etc.) but not things like surfaces (basically buffer you can draw to and from for things like blood on walls, art programs, etc) and other high end functions.  That said, I have found the built-in save feature to be just fine so far.

However, I am talking about saving and loading custom level files with their own syntax with my own editor and the CB engine.  GM level editor is fine for simple levels but when you are trying to make things as complicated and advanced as I am then it really isn't sufficient.  So, I am making my own level editor from scratch specifically for the CB engine using the menu/window/button library I am working on.

Title: Several Anouncements
Post by: necro on September 04, 2007, 01:24:00 am
Well, I plan to release a video of game play soon as I kept putting off the demo.  Also, I plan to release a few more early versions of my songs, but I really can't get much further on some of them till I...err, *acquire* some certain music resources.  A new mic would help to, but I am dead broke.

The level editor has had a number of major hurdles crossed, object creation from file now works and the actual variable loading should come next.  While not very efficient, certain parts of the levels will be left to be stored as pure executable code, as there isn't really any other way to do them.  Once levels can be loaded and stored fully, I just need to make the actual level editor place holder objects but I am at a quandary as to how to do that exactly.  I have a few ideas, but I will deal with them as they come and I may just skip over some of the bigger problems with a more ad hoc solution for the combat ball version of the editor.

Doesn't seem people care much.  Anyways, I am taking a break working on the new engine to get the last demo in the old engine done.  Up to 3 decent rooms, plan to have at least 6.  Also, I have spiffed up a number of sprites and fixed a few bugs.  I might try and get the boss I wanted to make done for the demo, but i might just reuse the giant saucer enemy thing from the older cb, but with some new effects and a few twists.  The boss i want to make is pretty complex, so I might just save him for the new engine.

Well, i was working on another game and I may get that done soon but since it missed its deadline, I am back to working on combat ball.  I Improved a number of things and have a few bugs to fix/work around yet but I hope to have a demo soon.  Sorry I keep putting off putting this out, but I don't want to release a demo with not enough new stuff in it.  I know I said no new screenies till the demo, but I lied I guess...

Now I have effects for the sun/moon and the bg move with the view so you can't out run the sky anymore.  Also, its still a bit to primitive but you can see sparks coming out of a pipe.

if he manages to make his game full screen (and when i say full screen, i dont mean resized, i mean screen resolution changed) he could use Fraps to record the video, like i did with RPG Maker

Wow...that'd be one hell of a feature...but the game is linear so no.  I think that in my other project though thatd be great.
