Title: Super Einstein
Post by: crzyrbl on October 07, 2006, 07:01:00 pm
A lot of you have been wondering what I've been up to lately.  College takes about 90% of my time, so I haven't had a lot of a time to myself.  One of the clubs I joined is Gamebuilders.  Im learning how to use a 2d game library called HGE.  Our group is coming up with a bunch of arcade-like games.  I plan on working on a platformer idea I came up with: Super Einstein!
Starting off with a mario-based pseudo engine, it will be slightly more puzzle than action.  The pipes will be replaced by worm holes.  The enemies are just equations that are blatently wrong, and when you jump/attack them, they rearrange into their correct form.  You can even use some equations as blocks, etc.  The blocks that slowly disappear after time will be replaced by an ultra-long tautology currently being concived by my TA.  When they become true they disappear completely.  If i include any vechicles, i am gonna use the infinity sign.  I am even gonna decorate the clouds with a little PV=nRT (ideal gas law).  If anything, this project will help me learn some of the many equations I need to know in college   :Dbiggrin.gif

sound vey cool, this will be some kind of math/physic project, right? I can't wait to see how it will turn out, feel free to post screenshot when you can :)smile.gif

Nice to see you again btw

it's cool your college has a game programming club.  i hope where ever I go to college, i cann still continue programming as a hobby.

yea thats a good thing, if you go to a school that doesnt have one at least if you can have programming classes as an option (at least twice per week) its also good

The first meeting (where we will actually be working on the game) is on Sunday.  cant wait!  (Ya, the idea was accepted!)

We had a brainstorming session today.  Here's the (ambitious) story we came up wih.  Einstein, experimenting on something, gets sucked in a wormhole, and, sorta destroys the universe.  (The original story was that he just gets sucked in to another universe and has to find his way back.)  So now Einstein must reconfigure the cosmos!  The adventure begins as you find yourself in a place where many worlds and "races" have collided (the universe of discourse).  Einstein (and the background) start off looking like nothing more than a bunch of black and white scribbles (no clear sounds as well).

The first "race" you meet is from the plane of geometry.  they are shapes that used to look like shapes, but now they are messed up squiggles.  Wrong equations in the area have corrupted and distorted the inhabitants, so you must
SOLUTIONATE THEM!!!  After going through the level and defeating the boss equation or meeting an objective (puzzle maybe?), the geomepa are restorated and they gladly restore shape to the world and, of course, yourself.  Through another wormhole, you meet another "race" called the that are colorful blobs, whom each have a faded color to them.  Same thing as before, solutionate the wrong equations, restore color to the universe.  next is of course a sound level, self-explainatory.  The one after that may be a nature/DNA/animal of some kind level.  The final level involves going through a dangerous castle (floating for anime ref?)  where at the the end you find a very big, very wrong, equation known as "the model of the universe."  Beat him, and the wormholes start to disappear.  hope you can make it to the last worm hole back to your lab before the universe of discourse disappears ;P

theres more, but i dont feel like typing anymore  :zzz:sommeil.gif

that may be a great product to make ppl learn at school, because often students doesnt want to fill up forms on a PC awnsering all sort of questions. If there's some interactivity and gaming stuff incorporated in it it make them more motivated. The idea sound nice

sorry, but this is not going to be a product that teaches people.  This is merly a(n artistic) game.

The level editor we were going to use (Qaf) is retarded and only compiles in vs2003, which is the ony vers. we dont have, so we are going to have to make our own level editor+bounding shape+file format.  cheers.

I know not a lot of ppl care about this project, but it's one that I believe in and am working hard to produce.  A few minutes ago I finally got my pixel perfect (detection-wise) collision detection method down.
Also, we've decide for sure on part of the story line, which ties directly into the levels. Most of the earlier story line was canned. After Ein is sucked into the universe of discourse, he restores the following entities (in order): color, sound, geometric shape, the third dimension, and *secret*.  The respective 70% sure levels start after you fall into the planet's ocean.  in level one, Ein will traverse a beach, a desert, and verse the boss in what appears to be an oasis. (keep in mind there is no color or definite shape in this level).  If there's time we'll add in a pyramid part to the level   in the next part of his adventure, he will battle his way through a grassy praire which slowly turns into a rampant jungle, with a dangerous battle amoungst the tree tops.   I won't spoil the rest!
I still really want to include the special abilities the Ein could gain from the equations, like camoflouge from restoring color, or the ability to rock enemies to death via music!

Is there a way to show video?

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 02, 2007, 03:37:00 am
there was some shareware programs that allowed you to capture window content in .mpg, mov and avi format. Of course there is always the Calcapture trick to edit it so it capture from a non calc emu window, like Explorer, Wordpad, etc, it has crappy colors but at least it's better than nothing

as for video on forums you need to upload the video on savefile.com and post the link here

ok, I downloaded FRAPS.  I'll try it out this weekend.
I got a VERY basic Ein.h working.  you can control via the wiimote with the D-pad to look in different directions.  if you flick it up you will jump.  if you tilt in the direction you are moving you will run.  I also added a rumble function where both the screen and the wiimote rumble.

mhmm Wiimote??? does this means this game is for the Nintendo Wii instead of PC now? I was sure it was for PC, unless now PC programs can use Wii controller?

sound nice tho

Or is this going to be available in a web browser, so PCs and Wiis can play it?  (Like the stuff at http://www.wiicade.com)
Title: Super Einstein
Post by: crzyrbl on January 27, 2007, 06:42:00 pm
You're both wrong lol.  The wiimote can be connected to any bluetooth-enabled pc.  This is in C++ and is not a webgame.  It's a PC game that uses the wiimote.  The wiicade games can only use the cursor thing, they can't sense motion, but this game does.  I tried to send the .avi to savefile.com, but it's not working.  know of any other upload sites?

EDIT:
I think its the network.  I'll try posting again tomorrow.

aaah ok thanks for pointing this out, I didn't knew the wiimote could be connected to something else than the actual console, I guess i learn something new everyday x.x

and savefile was down yesterday for me as well :(sad.gif I hope it's back up now

ok downloading atm, should take around 20 mins

EDIT: 11:50 now

EDIT: Cool stuff so far! I like how you added some perspective with the elements in the game, I think you should make the cloud border less tick though and make them more white :)smile.gif

There are no clouds like that in the finished game.  All of those graphics were just a test.  Also Ein is fully animated now, including skidding in a different direction.

check it out!  Three new vids compressed like hell into 17mb!  One shows Ein using the camoflauge ability after restoring color, and the other one shows Ein's ability to slow time after restoring time to normal!

http://www.filefactory.com/file/b87943

The fps is limited to 25 due to FRAPS
Usually it's between 150 and 500 fps

EDIT: btw, the clip that had the cloud thing again was in another test level, the other clips are from the actual first level, minus the abilities, which are gained latter on.

ya, you might want to disregard that.  almost none of the statements I made in that post are 100% true.  I must have been wasted or something.  Lemme sum what's true now, up:
I have much more free time this semester.
My major is CS, my classes more accurately take less than 10% of my time this semester
The game is well, nothing like that at all any more.  Just take a look at the new vids.
