Title: The Red Fly - A space exploration game
Post by: Spyro543 on June 23, 2014, 05:20:43 pm
This is a project I've been planning for a long time, and finally started a couple of days ago.

The Red Fly is a 2D space exploration game with some sandbox elements. Planets and the universe are randomly generated.

There will be 3 main modes for playing the game:
-On planets
-In the player's ship
-The map

Planets will be able to be explored and mined for materials. Planets will possibly contain rogue aliens to fight and structures to loot.

The player's ship is the most modifiable of the 3 modes. Structures can be built, placed, and moved, and resources, tools, and weapons can be crafted.

The map is where the ship can be moved and flown to planets, and other ships can be fought.

None of this is actually implemented yet though ;)

Here's a screenshot of the first planet interface, which is very far from complete:

More updates hopefully coming soon!

I like the old school feel this have. If it wasn't for the guy in the map and the troops option, I would have wondered if this was some sort of Solaris clone from the Atari 2600, since that game involved space exploration too.

Yeah, the only colors I'm using are shades of red and black. IDK why, I just chose that. :P

Looking nice!
What language are you using for it?

Just GameMaker.

Haha, I started making a version of Solaris for the 83(+) years ago, never got around to finishing it though :/

Did you play any Virtual Boy games recently? :P

Wow, a 83+ port of Solaris would be cool actually O.O. I wonder if it would be hard to pull off due to the motion blur?

I was kind of being lazy with the space battles (not that I'd gotten very far with that part), but it was straight up 2D - I hadn't really thought about doing scaled sprites, depth perception, etc. and the AI probably would have been very simple compared to the Atari version.

Solaris would probably make a pretty cool 84+CSE game if I had enough time & motivation :P If it ever does happen, I'll try to do it properly with the scaling, depth, and crazy enemies :)

ALL HAIL THE VIRTUALBOY !!1
Jk lol. Never tried that thing, I heard it's weird though. :P

I honestly thought only my school used GameMaker... I never got it. I always preferred TI BASIC.

I really like to use it. What does your school do with Gamemaker?

I tried Game Maker once but didn't figure out how to do proper tilemaps without writing a single line of code so I kinda missed the point then switched back to RPG Maker 2000/03. I mostly code on-calc, tho.

GM/TGF/MMF can be pretty handy for projects with limited deadline where school only give points on game design, art and such non-programming-oriented stuff, or if you work solo on the project but can't stand any kind of coding tasks.

My school uses game maker to teach game making, and everyone looks down on my calc programming when they can make pretty games. I prefer programming

side story:Friend does school speech in Scratch. When he says "...make a game without compilicated programming...", everyone looked at me. I'll elaborate when I get a computer, as I cannot type well on iPads...

Same opinion as DJ

Meh, I tried Scratch once, didn't really care for it. I found its simpleness was it's main limiting factor so I stopped using it.

EDIT: I made a thread (http://www.omnimaga.org/other-computer-languages-help/what-do-you-think-of-scratchgamemakeretc/) about the topic of Scratch and other such tools

Is it cross-platform?

Sorry, no. I don't have the money to buy GameMaker Studio :P

Why not write it in x86 asm? Cross-platform and fast. :p
Looks nice, looking forward to updates.

ASM is not exactly portable. :P OS wise that is. Of course you can run x86 asm on your calc.

not just OS-wise but also hardware-wise. Otherwise, Ndless would run every TI-89/92+/PRIZM/8x and all older Windows/Mac softwares perfectly.

I'm messing around DJ. <_<

bump (I think)
How is it going? I'll get gamemaker to play when you're done :D

I've been working on more sprites and random planet generation, so there is a little bit of progress being made.

I wonder what a calc version would look like...

just a thought
