Title: Water Works
Post by: Builderboy on November 25, 2009, 11:08:14 pm
A physics based game where your job is to get the drops of water into the filter to be cleaned. Unfortunately your materials are limited, and the environments odd, leading to some unique puzzle madness! If you are having trouble on any level, just remember: All are Possible; Some are Tricky!

http://greenfootgallery.org/scenarios/1083

This game was inspired a lot by a game i saw my friend playing on his iPhone, and when i realized i could make a version in java, i was very excited!  It implements my old pinball physics engine, albeit with major updates and a fancy new object system that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :)

Wow this is awesome! Interesting and original idea you had :D

So far I only noticed one glitch, though: sometimes, when dragging the obstacles, they remain transparent when you release them. So water goes through it anyway. But I liked it so far altough I couldn't get past LV 6

That happens when 2 objects are too close to eachother.  You'll know when the ring turns red.  But yeah Level 6 is when it starts getting difficult :)

Woo~ beat all the levels.

Nice game, mate.

Good job!  Which levels did you find the hardest?
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: {AP} on November 26, 2009, 12:19:07 am
7 and 8.

9 was REALLY easy when I figured out how to time it right. Only needed 2 platforms.

6 was the first time I had to think though. Nice difficulty curve and creative puzzles.

Glad to test it for ya. =)

HeeHee!  yeah those were the ones that took a while to make :)  And you managed 9 with only 2 platforms!? wow :P  Well, i included the bonus for a reason!
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: {AP} on November 26, 2009, 12:49:55 am
Yep! Took a bit of timing. Had to rotate the first and place the second one at the right time, but the drops just fell right in after that. =P

Post by: Builderboy on November 26, 2009, 12:57:02 am
lol, i probably should make the extra platform bonus a lot greater than it is.  I think right now it might only be worth a second of bonus time O.O
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: {AP} on November 26, 2009, 01:03:24 am
Yeah... I never got any of the time bonuses... too busy thinking. =(

Still, if I played through again, I could get some so I'm not sure how you should balance that or if it even needs balancing.

Also, this one doesn't seems to slow down (I mean, freeze during half a second about every 10 seconds while playing)

Post by: Builderboy on November 26, 2009, 10:46:17 am
Really?  Thats great!  I still don't know whats causing it, but its good to know it runs on slower computers! (If that is even the problem D:)

This is an awesome game!  I'm stuck on lvl 8.
I found a glitch. Water can pass thru walls! If you put a funnel in/near a wall...
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: Builderboy on November 27, 2009, 03:58:43 pm
Yeah, thats one of the harder levels.  Do you need any help?
Gah! Good catch!  I fixed it and it has been included in the update, not cones and cannon cannot be placed inside of walls :)

A new version has been uploaded which includes some bugfixes as well as a level loading system.  Each level now has a level name, which can be used to return to that specific level.  Also, 2 levels have been added, and they are fairly difficult >:D  Also, i have just introduced cannons in level 10, and they are loads of fun!

Nice!  Yeah i know that some levels have alternative solutions, thats why i give a bonus for solutions that don't use all the pieces. On that level i need all 4 pieces to set up the solution, but after i set it up, i can put one away.

I can't remember the name for level 8. :(
Oh, and I was easily able to guess the name of level 10. :)

Alright, a friend just layed my game after i sent him a ling, and he got frustrated after 2 levels because he didn't know he could rotate pieces. (He enjoyed it after i told him how, but thats no the point) The point is that i managed to achieve the awesomeness of completing all but 2 levels without rotating a single piece!  The ones i couldn't do were cannon and cones :P

Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: Builderboy on December 07, 2009, 10:02:04 pm
Sure, Its already been uploaded on the website page! :)

http://greenfootgallery.org/scenarios/1083

Just click on 'download' source above the game window.  You can view the individual .java files in the project folder, but if you want to play with it, you will have to download Greenfoot. (and then you can have fun taking advantage of the game! ;))

awsome didnt see that link btw whats greenfoot?????????
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: Builderboy on December 07, 2009, 10:16:21 pm
Ah, its a programing environment for making games and simulations.  It has libraries for interfacing with the keyboard, mouse, and screen, so its a great and easy way to make games for java.  Its what i used to make WaterWorks, and as you can see, it is quite powerful. (Although i overrode much of the basic Greenfoot core to bypass certain features XD) For more information, this page might be of help http://www.greenfoot.org/about/whatis.html

it would suck if you just used this game and not make your own, though x.x, it would be kind of cheating...

jk

i just figured i could look at it and maby learn a few things XD

side note ofr non java ppl: for(;;) is a infinite loop :P)

So the good news is that the contest is over, but the bad news is that I did not win :(

I believe it is due to my non coherence with the theme however, as i kinda threw it in as an afterthought XD.  Well, I guess i will just have to buy one with my own money :)
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: ztrumpet on December 24, 2009, 01:36:07 pm
Ah, too bad.  I thought it was great!  How many programs were entered?
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: Builderboy on December 24, 2009, 02:21:29 pm
A fair amount actually, although i am unsure about the exact number.  However, i will be content that my game is currently the most popular, even if it didn't win the contest :)

That game is fun  The only suggestion I have is to make the rotation system better, perhaps by dragging with the right mouse button or using arrow keys to rotate.
Title: Re: Water Works
Post by: Builderboy on September 06, 2011, 08:02:49 pm
It actually was inspired by enigmo :] And yeah making the right mouse button an alternative way to rotate sounds like a good idea!
