Title: I lost XP Home Premium
Post by: imo_inx on December 04, 2011, 02:11:55 pm
A year ago I was messing around with Windows on my netbook and gotz a virus. :(
Somehow it deleted my system files in system32.
I tried to do everything and installed ubuntu.
I now dislike ubuntu.
What I'm trying to say is that I need a cd or an iso of windows XP so I can use it again.
I don't care which service pack it has, because I can always install sp3.
If you need, my netbook model is:
Acer Aspire ONE

If you don't have the install CD(s)/DVD(s), buy it/them.

You might want to call Acer and tell them you lost your Windows XP CD. Or else you can always go buy one at the store. Also your netbook might have a recovery option, you might want to try it.

Also note that distribution of copyrighted stuff (such as ISOs of Windows) is forbidden here.

And anywhere else as far as i know :P

But yeah, try contacting acer, because they may give a disk to you if you still have the registration key or laptop id num (usually on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop)

Linux Mint is a nice alternative to Ubuntu - it's pretty darn user friendly, so I think you might like it.
Get the DVD release and install it.

I guess you're pretty much doomed, in that case, unless you go scavenge a CD somewhere.

That's asking for a bit too much... :P
We can not do illegal things here, so the only thing I'll say is google and torrent :P

Actually, if you are very serious about installing Windows 8 (bad idea :P), here's an official, Microsoft link to download the entire ISO:

You'll probably get better results asking Microsoft for a new key. They usually just give you one no questions asked. Be sure to get exactly the right version of key/windows, if they mismatch it won't work.

edit: if that somehow doesn't work, ask a student to get one for free from their university. It might be semi-illegal/gray-area to give such a key to someone else, but nothing serious..

A few years ago, my bro bought a computer at Staples and it did not even come with a CD, so when he had to reformat his computer, he was pretty much screwed and had to buy a new copy of Windows XP. Otherwise my old comp came with one.

I can't really help because the only free alternative is the beta of Windows 8 or Linux itself, the latter which you don't want from your post above. Else, you're screwed.

Btw for those buying new computers, I think they no longer come with install/backup CDs: You need to create that backup CD yourself from Windows tools when you buy your computer. If you forget or if you lose your backup, then you're screwed.
