Title: Is this a good gaming computer?
Post by: nxtboy III on April 30, 2012, 07:26:02 pm
Hi,
I was wondering if this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229285  computer will be able to play games like crysis 2 on all high settings (at 1024x768 resolution). Also can it play other modern games on all high?

Thanks, and have a nice day,
nxtboy III

From experience, when the description focuses this much on how the machine is useful for watching videos, medias, music, etc, it usually means it's designed mainly for that, not necessarily for gaming. I could be wrong, but usually it might run newer games, but probably not necessarily Crysis 2 maxed out.

Someone who has more experience on video cards and that processor might be able to help better, though. I myself got an older computer that runs Crysis, but will lag when it's maxed out.

Well, actually this is titles "CyberPowerPC Gamer Ultra 2098", so, it must be for gaming.
Also i'm pretty sure it can, considering my screen resolution.

So looking at the processor, AMD FX-4100 is about equivalent to low-end Intel i5 processors. Which is pretty decent, and will run all games fine. Now the graphics card, AMD Radeon 6670 1GB, it is a little doubtful that some games now, and many games within a year or two, you won't be able to play high-graphic games on highest settings, even on your screen. At the moment this will be decent, but you should also be on a lookout for graphics card upgrade in a near future if you plan on playing more and more graphics intensive games.

It can definitely do some serious gaming, but the GPU could prove a bit weak for some games (and it will suck for GPGPU computations - NVidia 4xx and 5xx are much better at it).

What about skyrim?

It should play Skyrim on high settings just fine. My computer has slightly lower stats and I play Skyrim with it (Although taking a bath in dragon fire with anti-aliasing has a tendency to reduce the framerate a tad below comfortable).

It depends about Quake. If Quake uses DOS, it might require DOSBox to run fine if it runs XP or above. On my Intel Celeron 2.93 GHz, Doom ran at about 4 FPS on my XP machine because XP failed hardcore at emulating DOS.

Even Windows games might have troubles running on newer systems if those games are old too. Eg Starcraft Brood War seems to run at less than 25 FPS on my computer, yet Starcraft II runs at 45 maxed out, even in team games (except Fastest Map ever or when someone goes mass zergling).
