I'm buying a laptop. my price range is $750 at absolute max, and I have found one that I think is a good one, but I wanna see if you guys have anything better. I am strongly towards a gaming laptop - something that can play half life 2, runescape, portal, etc. NO INTEL! I found what I think is a good one here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152159
edit: <our dear friend's name here> has shown me this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157269
I think that is just fantasic.
discuss.
-
well.. I'm finally being a real man and selling my mac and buying a pc.

The troll spray works! :P
Wait until I get on IRC and start omnomnizing, though. :P
That said, I cannot help much on helping you choose those laptops, because their specs seems to feature stuff I don't know much about, such as not showing the video memory and stuff. I personally would go with enough memory and a 64 bit OS, though, and a relatively good video gard is required for recent games.
-
ok. Im looking for laptops. again.
price: $800 MAX
gpu type: dedicated
gpu vendor: nvidia
screen size: preferred 17"
ram: maybe 4 GB? im not too worried
Hdd: im not worried about that
OS: windows 7 home premium (professional is preferred)
So ive been looking at these 2 today and i wanna see what you think:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5581197
I like the 2nd one for its screen size and the gpu
-
Didn't you get one already? Or was it just planning?
I would say the second one, but I have no experience in video cards, so...
-
I think im actually just going to go with the first one because of all the good reviews i got with it. People say they have played like L4D2 on high and COD on high easily
-
Ah seems good. Did you read the reviews for the second one too? What did they have to say? Also do you mean the first COD ever?
-
I'm not sure. I wouldn't think so either. Also, my sister said that when she researched laptops that gateway was a bad brand.. Idk what to think anymore to be honest.. the only brand that I havn't herd anything bad from is toshiba. Im not sure either if im going to be able to afford one. I just need a good laptop that can do great gaming for around $750. Any suggestions on that?
edit: I fell in love all over again.. ;D

That last laptop is overpriced, you could get an i5 for that price. I wouldn't worry about the gpu that much.
Just rely on your default/motherboard onboard one.
The RAM seems fair, but I would upgrade it to 2x 4 asap.
-
Aren't integrated GPU usually lower performance than most others and unsupported by most games? Maybe I am wrong. It might be nice that he is not stuck playing games from 2005 or before on it either.

True, but with the proper drivers you could make a hack-ish simulated video card.
On my main comp (with some sick specs), I still use the integrated one. (Basically, because I do not need a specialized video card)
-Intel Core i7 980x (6cores + 6 virtual)
-24gb RAM (204-pin SODIMM DDR3, 6 x 4gb)
-256GB SSD - Samsung Solid State Drive
Do I need to say more?
-
Ah ok. I assume you need to be careful which drivers you choose, though? I remember messing up my old comp before with that... x.x
-
Ofcourse, you have to be careful with every hardware edit/upgrade you make.
-
YES! integrated graphics cards are THE WORST. Also, i don't want to rely on some hack to make it "semi-good". Graphics cards is my foundation for this hunt. You gotta realize, the Nvidia GeForce 420M is a graphics card that is coming from the top of the line graphics card series! To me, thats pretty dang important.
-
You should consider spending the extra $150 and get a computer with an i7. The laptop I bought in 2009 is now $950, and it has
-i7 1.6GHz/~3GHz with powerboost
-nvidia geforce gt 240m
-4gb ram
-500gb seagate hdd at 5400rpm (crap really :()
I know you said $800, but going the extra $150 may be worth it.
-
lol ok. My budget isn't even $800 even more. That was pushing beyond the theoretics of my budget. Anyways, I like this laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115860 because of
1) its very affordable
2) VERY POWERFUL graphics cards (this card is coming from nvidia's top of the line graphics cards for mobile computers. more powerful than the gt 240M)
3) 1GB DDR3 VRAM (thats a lot!)
4) I'm happy with anything above 2 GHz and not at all considering what kind of cpu it is. This one happens to be the core i3 which is perfectly fine by me (ive been using a core 2 duo for quite some time and that makes me used to it.)
edit: also, i looked at the specs for the gt 240m and the gt 420m. 420m is better by a long shot
-
It isn't better by a longshot, the 240m has a higher clock speed (easily overclockable, but still), and similar everything else. The 420m has more cuda cores, that seems to be about it. I can run 4 1080p videos at the same time with 3286x1080 as my resolution; it seems very powerful to me. I don't know what more you can really ask for out of a graphics card.
Also, I still say you should push for the i7 or at least an i5. But that's just me.

one thing wrong with that:
its hp. I have herd soooooo many bad things about hp its not even funny.
Ok, my theoretical budget is now up to $1000. This is because I revisited on how much I can get out of my current computer with everything bundled with it, and I can get a lot more than what I thought I could previously.
and with a $1000 budget.. I shall pronounce my eyes are all for this beast here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114903
-
Well personally I don't mind them, but the stuff they install on them that you can't remove is annoying if you don't need it. When uninstalling it it gets reinstalled silently on next reboot x.x
-
yeah, and plus i herd someone on the irc say that they went through like 2 hp's in a year and they switched to toshiba and said they would NEVER go back again.
the new laptop I have my eye set upon right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114903
she's a beauty and a beast
EDIT: YIKES!!!!!!!! look at all the software there is installed on this thing X_X:
Adobe Acrobat Reader, Google Toolbar, Toshiba Supervisor Password Utility, Sun Java 2 Runtime Environment, Skype, QuickBooks (Trial), Toshiba Assist, Toshiba Recovery DiskCreator, Toshiba PC Health Monitor, NetZero Internet Service, Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, Toshiba Eco Utility, Toshiba ReelTime, Toshiba Bulletin Board, Microsoft Windows Live Essentials, Toshiba Media Controller, Microsoft Silverlight, Norton Internet Security 2010 (30 days trial), Toshiba Disc Creator, Toshiba Value Added Package, Face Recognition software, Toshiba DVD Player, Microsoft Works 9.0, Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition (60 days trial), WildTangent Orb Games Console, Microsoft Windows Media Player 12, Toshiba Service Station, Toshiba Hardware Setup Utility, Toshiba Web Camera Application, Toshiba Online Backup (30 days trial)
edit 2: theoretical budget now on $1020 (this is getting more realistic too)
-
Another brand to be careful with are Dell laptops. Not only they're expensive, but it seems they tend to break faster, because everytime I heard someone saying his laptop broke on the old forums, it was a Dell laptop
-
ah yeah, dont worry. I would NEVER go with a dell. Those things are just not good as far as I know.
-
I own a 2008 Dell Latitude D830. It has a 15.4" LCD panel with 1920x1200 resolution with a discrete NVidia graphics card. Its casing is very robust! It is awesome!
I don't care for the new Dell laptops too much. Dell went cheap with the new designs.
-
ah.. well, right now ive decided I want my laptop as soon as I can get it, and by waiting for xmas, im only missing out on $250. So, which means my near future laptop will be this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115860
edit: I do want the laptop i posted ^ but I'm not sure if its good or not.. It is a very new laptop and I kinda wish i could find out some reviews on it. So far from what I've found it seems ok.. but you can never tell :S
edit 2: my budget is now at $800. I think that if I can't find a better laptop than that, then ill just go with that one.. I wanna see though if I can find one with a better GPU
edit 3: my laptop is now set to be this one because it has a slightly better CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115857

I found a couple of sites that have numerous mobile CPU benchmarks...
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html)
http://www.cpubenchmark.net (http://www.cpubenchmark.net)
-
Interesting sites. I am amazed at how quick the CPU in my computer went low in the list. I got an i7 at 2.80 GHz
-
well, i looked at tigerdirect.com today and I found this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5270805&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs
compared to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114903 (the toshiba qosmio)
I like the gateway for its graphics card (it is from the gtx series). But it has an intel core 2 duo compared to the i5, 1440 x 900 (my current monitors resolution) compared to 1680 x 945, 17" display compared to the 18.4" display.. Overall, the upgrade isn't worth it to me because the cpu and the resolution imho can make up for about a mere 16 cuda cores, and a small 16 MHz on the processing speed.

Yeah, I'm using a D820, basically an older revision of the 830. My school got some newer latitudes and they seemed really flimsy.
-
Ok, so I think im good with the laptop hunting. I found THE BEST laptop deal I can EVER get like.. EVER
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320598117255#ht_500wt_1156
I CANNOT believe the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M that comes in this thing. This is nvidia's 3rd best mobile graphics processing unit next to the 470M which is right below the awesome GeForce 480M. :O
-
Nice! But I hope when you can get it that they still have some in stock x.x
-
DEFINITELY. yeah, I would be floored if I just got the money and they dont have it in stock.. im sure they will, it says 42 sold and over 10 available so they might have like a 100 waiting to sell or something like that
edit.. 47 sold :(
edit 2: ONLY 19 LEFT :'( :'( :'(
-
That is great for the money-hope you can get one!
-
Darn, I hope you can get one in any way x.x
-
Nope.. based on the patterns, id say itll sell out before it ends (14 left atm). Oh well.. I can just wait for christmas and get this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114903
I mean its not too much different, and personally I think its quite amazing for what it is! :D
-
One thing btw: When you get a laptop, make sure to not overuse it during long periods of time and maybe have something to make sure it won't overheat either. Those things needs to be handled with care. Only be hard on a laptop if you get attacked, your life is threatened and that's your only way to defend yourself, or if you get rickrolled in real life (much worse than the former).
-
lol! Yeah, don't worry, my dads gonna buy me a case for it when i get the laptop. Also, the heat dispels out of the back instead of the bottom to keep your pants from burning :p. :(... the laptop listing has ended with exactly 10 laptops left. I bet when the last 10 go back up, then they'll just run out in the 1st 2 days or so.. Oh well.
-
Ah nice, it's good the heat isn't blocked inside the laptop. Still, make sure to not use it in the bed or something. :P
Good luck!
-
yeah. Also, I think that my eyes are now set to this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041O42H8/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
it has a LED back-lit keyboard and the super amazing GeForce GTX 460M with 1.5 GB GDDR5 memory supporting directx 11. :)
-
Something I'd highly reccomend once you finally get the laptop is to undervolt the CPU - it makes it run around 10 C cooler and increases the battery life.
-
Can it make it much slower/cause it to sometimes shut down under extreme usage, though? I don't know much about electronics x.x
-
I wouldn't think so..
fb39ca4: there is an eco mode button to save power and a utility to get more battery life if needed :)
-
Undervolting doesn't decrease performance. It simply lowers the operating voltage, leaving the frequency alone. Some chips are better than others at undervolting so they are all set at a high voltage at the factory. (If it is too low processor errors may occur) Read this (http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/235824-undervolting-guide.html) for the full explanation.
-
Ok thanks for the link :)
-
yeah.. im kinda worried now actually. I think I have when im gonna sell my computer but im not entirely sure yet.. First i gotta make sure my stuff sells and if it doesnt then I might have a problem x.x
also i dont wanna sell my computer too early or no omnimaga for me for a while x.x
-
I would maybe save more and not sell your computer until you can afford a laptop you want.
-
well, remember this computer is going to be about $600 in my budget.. lol I dont think i can make $600 in 2 months XD
but what i am going to do is make sure everything sells before i sell my computer.
-
AH ok, I hope you can sell enough stuff you don't need much anymore. I myself recently sold a bunch of unused video games that have no hopes to become collectables.
-
yeah. I also just looked up all the stuff that would suposedly come with it, and if I sell all my stuff individually, I got it all totalled up to $825! :o
also, which means.. combined with everything else......
/me has a theoretical budget of now $1300 :D
-
Nice, I hope you can manage to sell your stuff. Sometimes it can be hard. Maybe ask friends if they're interested.
-
yeah, im sure that itll sell though considering its all daily usage products.. exept maybe iwork '06. Now that is one product.. im kinda doubting.
-
Yeah I am speaking from experience. Over here my mom tried to sell stuff for very cheap like TVs and no one would bother buying them. She ended up having to give them X.x
-
x.x yeah.. well, im sure they'll sell. Keyboards, mice, monitor.. pretty much.
edit: mac os leopard sold via offer after like 5 mins i put it on for sale! :o
-
Wow nice. Hopefully you'll be able to sell a bunch of your stuff fast. Are you putting that stuff on Ebay btw or just newspaper?
