Looks excellent. Acer has some really nice ones like that too, I recommend buying through them though as they have some really nice computers for good prices. Go check them out on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115239
^this one has your same specs but a 120GB hdd and 2GB ram and 15.4" screen and it only costs $1.5k!

I mean don't get me wrong, toshiba is great, I'm just an acer fan. :)smile.gif

I was actually considering buying that one, but I decided to go with a 2Ghz pentium M and radeon x700 because I need graphics power more than anything else. (being the silly gamer I am. :D ) x700 >>>> x1400 However if you don't really need the gaming power I definitely recommend opting for a dual core laptop as you can get a lot of power out of that. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115320 is the one that I bought. It should be here tomorrow actually. :oohmy.gif My mom won't let my play with it until graduation on june 3 though. :'(

@spellshaper: core duo is the name for those nifty new dual core Intel chips for notebooks.

Normally you'd think that the x1400 would be better than an x700 right as it's a whole series ahead. Not so! The x1400 is the cheapo version of the new series while the x700 is one of the higher end ones of the previous series. The x1400 has a great processor and can do a few more operations/sec than the x700 can, however, it has a severe dearth of pipelines and just about everything else graphically is slower. In terms of games, the x1400 can run half life 2 awesomely at medium-ish settings whereas the x700 can run half life 2 awesomely at very high settings. x1400 can barely run battlefield 2 on low settings and x700 can get some nice mid-high range settings.

Btw, if you buy an acer in the price range you are setting that toshiba at ($2000) check out this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115226
If that is not the absolute ultimate notebook computer I don't know what is. O_O (spengo does not count those 8-12lb monsters that should be referred to as "small desktops" not laptops. :Ptongue.gif ) Yes, acer owns all. :D x1600 in that baby!

I would have to agree with spengo, and with everything you want to get with toshiba it would be over 2000 + shipping. So I would suggest getting the later link from spengo, but the 1500 would do just fine. So if you are going to spend 2k on a laptop, go with the last link :D.

maybe, the problem with those is that they overheat and it all come out on my mouse hand, some of them are still using FAT32, and most come with little or no software i need.  i do like the better graphics card though...
Title: Laptops
Post by: spengo on May 16, 2006, 10:11:00 am
Umm, the no extra software is a good thing imo. :oohmy.gif All that provides is a reason for manufacturers to jack up the price of thier computer when you could easily get a cheap student ms office suite or even free like at my school. If you aren't a student, there's always openoffice.org too. :D Much woot. Also, with a bunch of needless software, you have to spend time uninstalling the stuff you don't want.

The overheating is due to n00bish use. Obviously, the guy who wrote that review was thinking something along the lines of "oh I'm doing games, I should lock my processor into max speed with that nifty manager program that comes with it." :Ptongue.gif If you notice the reviews of overheating are very few and many more talk about the great graphics they were getting on the newer games.

Fat 32 is nothing. Takes a grand total of about 5 seconds to convert it to ntfs. The hard drives are very high quality seagate drives with the maximum speed available for that much space in a low profile form.

im talking about the stuff toshiba offers that isnt bloatware.  one of them fixes noisy optical drives ie.  i would get it if i knew it wasnt going to overheat but i dont.  any laptops with specs like that arent from acer? (or hp, or compaq, or...)
Title: Laptops
Post by: spengo on May 17, 2006, 12:23:00 pm
Wait... software that fixes noisy optical drives...

#1: wtf??! that makes no sense
#2: I don't notice eccessive noise from my optical drive anyways :oohmy.gif

On june 3 when I am allowed to play with it more I will post you screenies of battlefield 2 and counter strike source and I bet it won't overheat. :)smile.gif

Btw, mine is extremely sexy, the screen is nice and big but not too big to be a hassle to carry like those 17" monster laptops. There are no dead pixels at all!! much woot. It weighs a light 6 lbs and the case overall seems very sturdy. I haven't dropped it yet but I didn't notice any twisting of the monitor at all and it seemed really firm as I held it. The integrated bluetooth is a very nice touch and the little sony bluetooth mouse I got works excellently. I really do like the screen a lot. It has a very wide viewing angle too. :oohmy.gif On a purely cosmetic note the acer logo is up in the top right hand corner as opposed to smack in the middle like dell or alienware. :)smile.gif Newegg's shipping was uber as it got here in 3 business days just like they said. It boots up almost instantly. :oohmy.gif I press the power button and there is barely any time at all before I can log in and use it. Much faster than my 2.8Ghz p4 desktop. Also, it's really quiet. O_O I haven't played any games or done any real heavy duty stuff yet, but with the basic installing and goofing off with the bluetooth mouse there was like, no noise at all.

I have to think of a cool name for it though. :oohmy.gif It is temporarily named Zangetsu after my favorite bleach character Ichigo's sword. (yes a sword is a character :Ptongue.gif ) I kind of want something more original though... *spengo goes to quickly make a random letter generator on his ti 89*

EDIT: I got it! I shall name it Stigandr which means "wanderer" in ancient norse. \o/

if you've ever owned a ps2, you'd know what a noisy optical drive sounds like.  all the software does is lower the rpm if the disc is acting up (happens with old or scratched discs, some drives dont like certain formats)  anyway, thats not really important.  what is important is that if i did get an acer, i would get the last one, and one out of every three reviewers (NOT NEWEGGS, cnet reviewers for example) got a lemon for that model.  i dont feel very comfortable considering they didnt get much help from the customer service.  the ones who said it was freakin awsome (not doubting that) said they never had to deal with them.  price is nonissue here, whether this thing is going to last a long time without breaking down is...

oh ya, bleach is awsome.

after seeing a friends 14.1" widescreen laptop, i think the toshiba might be too small now.
Title: Laptops
Post by: spengo on May 17, 2006, 07:12:00 pm
Well, I dunno maybe I got really lucky. Nothing is broken so far as I can tell, and I even got a 0 dead pixel screen. :D

So far I've asked them questions about the bluetooth mouse as I couldn't get it to connect properly right away without messing with the bluetooth settings in the control panel every time I turn on the machine. I haven't got a response back yet (well I emailed like 2 hours ago :Ptongue.gif ) but I shall report on the results.

I have never owned a ps2 however, but I can relate to loud dvd drives I suppose. On my desktop, if I try to play anime (like in avi format or something) directly off a dvd with video lan, it gets really really loud. o.oblink.gif The drive that is. It sounds painful. I have not tested this with the laptop yet so I don't know about that. Also, I bought an extended warranty to make sure it lasts as long as I need it. :)smile.gif You should do that whether you buy acer, toshiba, dell or anything.

I got to play with it again today because my dad was messing with the wireless trying to get a network going. The wireless network that is also shared by a windows '98 computer and an xp home with an extremely tempermental usb wireless thingy. Every time I connect with the laptop, the usb wireless dies in the desktop. >:0 I hate that usb thing. Whenever anyone touches the internet on any other computer it goes down to like 1mbps and gets irc lag of like 12 seconds. :Ptongue.gif If I try to torrent stuff it randomly disconnects as if it can't handle the bandwidth torrenting consumes. Rather unsatisfactory imho. I should just get my parents to bear with stringing ethernet across the room to the desktop. :Ptongue.gif*note for future reference* never buy a usb wireless thingy, they suck major arse (sorry about the rant, but I do have anger at this usb pos wireless :angry:angry.gif )

@ the toshiba: isn't there one with a 15.4" widescreen too? There should be. :Ptongue.gif 15.4" wsxga+ is sexy :> Go look for the bigger toshiba ones. I'm almost positive they exist.

Post by: crzyrbl on May 19, 2006, 12:31:00 pm
found three more laptops to choose from (not including that acer ^)

1: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?seg=HHO&poid=327377&fgpn=PSPA0U-02F01R&src=ABEM&cm_mmc=CNET_Feed-_-Notebook_PCs-_-_-_-Satellite_P100_ST7211_Customizable  its only 7.1 pounds for a 17" laptop and pretty dang sturdy.  the 7600go grfx card is nice too (better than x1600 i think).  comes with too many features to mention, the coolest being that fingerprint reader!

2: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_CTO-Start?ProductSKU=M1NBSP06-A&catname=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_FE_Series  it has a nice 15.4" screen, great keyboard, a 7400go, which is still nice.

3: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/entnb_e1705?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn although almost a pound heavier than the toshiba, it has an optional tv tuner, adequate multi-mediafunctions, and the 7900 GS, which is the equivalent of the 7800 GTX!
"Save $750 on select Inspiron? notebook systems $1999 or more in Dell Home.
For this offer, enter Dell Coupon Code: R3D0GW03LCSZ14"

price is not really an issue for me, and i dont think (but not sure) i need to worry about weight as i wont need to have it next to me all day.

You wont need a 17" screen, it will kill the battery faster. 15.4 is fine.

is 8 pounds too heavy for college? ive heard a very wide variety of responses....

EDIT:

anyone else suprised that the decked out Dell is the cheapest?!?
Title: Laptops
Post by: spengo on May 19, 2006, 07:33:00 pm
Umm, you think the Dell is cheapest? Hell, Alienware, a company notorious for overpricing things is cheaper than dell. Dell is really only good for businesses that want to buy computers in large quantities. I can see sony being more expensive but I thought toshiba was a pretty cheap place as things go. That's really weird to have dell being cheaper than toshiba. o.oblink.gif Configured the way I'd want it, it comes to $2001. Not bad at all.

You know that a geforce 7400 go is the low end version of the 7-series right? The x700 in my laptop 0wnz it. :)smile.gif 7400 is a pretty good graphics card though, nonetheless. About equivilant to the x1400's in the other computers. 7800 go is pure awesomeness though. :oohmy.gif

I don't know what your preferences are but I really like mine at 6lbs and I don't think I'd want a bigger screen than the 15.4" wide it has. It seems really big compared to the 13" laptops at school so a 17" would be veritably huge. My screen supports resolution up to 1680*1050 resolution. :] It is very pretty. I probably wouldn't mind 8lbs too much, but... 6lbs is much lighter.

Of those three you listed I like the dell the best. The price seems fairly good (maybe not as good as acer, but it's still good) and it's really powerful. I don't know about the size though still. That is a matter of pure opinion, however, so if you think you'd rather have a 17" screen and an 8-9lb laptop then go for it. The only thing I would really worry about is battery life. I doubt you get more than 2 hours even on power saving settings with all that heavy duty stuff in it. :oohmy.gif Buy a spare battery for sure if you get the dell. That's another thing I really like about mine, it gets about 3.5 hours doing internet and word processing and stuff, but it still has enough power to do some serious gaming if I want. I think I'll buy another battery anyways though, for long trips and the like.

gah, now im leaning towards the 17" toshiba.  It seems to be the most balanced in portability, reliability, performance, and extras.  despite its size, i hear it is the sleakest, lightest, most solid 17" notebook out there.

Post by: spengo on May 23, 2006, 06:58:00 pm
how much does it weigh? o_O How long is the battery? Isn't the toshiba the one with only the 7400 graphics card? (which isn't bad btw, just not one of the faster ones out atm) It doesn't look too bad to me. :oohmy.gif kinda expensive tho. I bet with it decked out it's still over 8lbs though. :(sad.gif Hey if all else fails, flip a coin lol!

I just sent my old Sony GRX 650 in for repair (finally)! :)smile.gif

$150 to $200 to fix it. Is it worth it? Probably not. :(sad.gif

The laptop is 4 years old. Here are the specs:

1.8 GHz P4M <_<dry.gif
512 MB Ram =|mellow.gif
30 GB HDD  =|mellow.gif
Radeon 7500 w/32 MB dedicated video <_<dry.gif
8 Lbs o.oblink.gif
2 hour battery life :(sad.gif
...and the most important...
16.1" screen with 1600x1200 native resolution B)cool.gif:wub:wub.gif

This laptop is so old, I probably could not sell it for more than $500. And, you may think I am crazy for spending the money to get it fixed. But, I am in love with the screen.

XGA 1028x768 = 789504 pixels :lol:laugh.gif
WXGA 1200x800 =960000 pixels :(sad.gif
WSXGA 1440x900 = 1296000 pixels :(sad.gif
SXGA 1280x1024 = 1310720 pixels :(sad.gif (has anyone realized this is not a standard aspect ratio?)
SXGA+ 1440x1050 = 1512000 pixels  <_<dry.gif
WSXGA+ 1680x1050 = 1764000 pixels :)smile.gif:Ptongue.gif
UXGA 1600x1200 = 1920000 pixels :)smile.gif:wub:wub.gif
WUXGA 1920X1200 = 2304000 pixels  :oohmy.gif:wub:wub.gif

To me desktop real estate is the most important factor followed by graphics card and then CPU/memory.

But that is just me. ;)wink.gif

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=409&card2=10
I liked your dell better. (which is odd since I normally don't like dell)

@ranman: it depends on if you are intending to buy a new computer soon. :oohmy.gif It's worth it if you don't want a new computer and just want to stick with that one. :)smile.gif Personally though, I like to get a new computer every 2-3 years though. They go out of date so fast. :(sad.gif Nice screen tho! Beats my wsxga+

To me, 1st priority is graphics, next is battery life, then size and then cpu, memory, and the other stuff. This kind of shows in the computer I bought too lol. Only 1GB memory and a 2Ghz pentium M (no core duo) but x700 graphics and 6lbs and about 3.5 tested battery.

... Actually a 7600 go is not better than a mobility x1600

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=409&card2=366

For some odd reason, even though the 7800 go is extreme and ultimate power of dhoom, the 7600 go is like... wimpy compared to it. It probably helps the battery some though with the low powered card. It certainly beats an integrated one anyways lol.

Nice! :D I love tom's hardware. Although it almost seems more a review of the Acer/Asus series laptops lol. (the ferrari is way overpriced too imho. :(sad.gif My $1.3 laptop has better specs than it... and ferrari is $2k. All for the fancy paint job and ferrari logo!)

Looks like your gpu beats mine by about 1k in 3dmark scores, but mine hangs in about 5-15fps below yours on most of the games, so 'tis all good. The x1600 apparently really gives you a boost with the high anti-aliasing and stuff. O_O Maybe that's why it gets those higher 3dmark scores. Mine's a lot smaller and lighter than the Asus one though. \o/ Better battery too so it's a tradeoff.

Of course... then there's the new http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115226 with 2GB ram, x1600 256MB dedicated, 2Ghz core duo, and other awesome pwnagement and it's the same size as mine and only 30 minutes less battery. It costs $2k though... I think my friend frank is getting that one 'cause he has a bit more $$$ to spend than I.

A couple weeks ago was the best time to buy my laptop (8100) because it went on uber sale at newegg because of the launch of the 8200 series. When mine first came out, it too was $2k (about a year ago) and it's about $1.5k right now. Newegg dropped it down to $1.3k when the 8200 came out and cycled them out (no more left!). Much woot for price camping! You can still buy mine at other newegg competitors but only at the $1.5k price. Muahahaha! Newegg ftw!

Anyways, quit deciding and buy one and give it a good review so we can see how much uberness you got! :ninja:ninja.gif

Nice. :oohmy.gif If you dun care about the screen too much buy it now! You will notice the screen if you do anything other than gaming on it tho. :oohmy.gif It's not much pixel real estate to work with. Other than that though it's all uberness of dhoom!

It kinda sucks they don't offer the 7900 in the customizable one though... Then you could change the screen to wsxga+ for $50 more. :(sad.gif

Yeah go for it though. Even though battery life will be poor, 7900 is like... twice as good as my x700 lol. :lol:laugh.gif You will be able to play next year's games at the uber settings.

The LCD Panel was broken, so it had to be repaired (although the warranty does not cover that :(sad.gif ). It's a Samsung R50 (bought in November 05) with an Intel Centrino 1.73 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB HDD, 15,4'' WXGA (it's like a mirror...) and an ATI X300 (it's not the best one, but I don't play games anyway). Well hopefully. Wtf would you do without gigabyte lan, bluetooth, and a remote (assuming you have windows media xp whatchamacallit something or other). 'Twould be lame-o. Especially the lan.

it would be GigaBIT LAN, not byte (8 times the difference). That seems like a machine.

I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-27. PIII @ 500mHzn 128MB RAM, 20GB HD, Win XP Pro (I know I am nuts running it on this comp)

D00D, get more ram. o.oblink.gif How can you survive? Isn't there another slot? Buy a gig stick and shove it in there. Also... external hard drive. 20GB is like... 3 videogames and no anime. :Ptongue.gif

Also, my bad. bit... I knew it sounded weird when I was saying it too lol. I blame cryzble for messing me up! >:0 j/k

I know I have to, I can have up to 320MB in the Machine (the 64 built in plus a 256 stick in the slot that has another 64 in it). The problem with and external drive is the USB support, it is only 1.0 VERY slow, and if I want 2.0 ports, then I loose some network stuff (only two PCMCIA slots, and no built in networking). The laptop is really only for shcool right now, and I use the MUCH MUCH MUCH better desktop for most everything else.

LOL usb 1.0??!! Do they still have those?! Rofl. Well, if you only use it for school, how much battery does it have? That would be the important thing then.

Hmm, buy Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion fer sher. It is definitely the coolest single player rpg out atm and it will look f-ing sweet on a nvidia 7900.

Buy counter strike: source 'cause it's only $20 and it's still the current favorite lan game. (or you could just get Half Life 2 for $4-50 and that includes CS:S) Seriously, everyone has counter strike. :Ptongue.gif

I intend to buy Haze and Battlefield 2142 when they come out.
http://hazegame.uk.ubi.com/
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-87069131846849265&q=battlefield+2142

For real time strategy games, the best looking ones atm seem to be Age of Empires III and Star Wars: Empire at War but I have bought neither of these. We still play AoE II. :D

And if you have any moneys left over Battlefield 2 is my favorite fps atm. :>

But yeah, Oblivion and cs:s are neccesary and in the future bf2142 and haze.

Definitely update your graphics drivers. That's one of the first things to do right after you update the os and burn a dvd backup. Just go to the nvidia.com or ati.com or whatever and download the latest drivers. It's no big deal. :Ptongue.gif

example: with the stock drivers (I never updated until recently) of my 9600XT in the desktop that it came with, it overheats when playing doom 3 about 10 minutes in. Lighting is all flickery and crazy and terrible looking in fear and battlefield 2. I finally updated and boom, everything works perfectly.

WOOT! I am using the laptop atm! They let me use it today since my grandparents just came from texas and were too excited to see me playing with it. Much woot. I shall install oblivion and get some playing in as soon as I'm done setting it up, converting things to the way I want, burning backups, and other such things.

@ramman: looks very good. Meh, at graphics card, but it isn't a bad one... just not an uber one. It can probably handle bf2, but not very well. :/ Older games should be fine though. Doom 3, half life 2, stuff like that should probably get mid-low settings on it.

i didnt download any drivers because it gave my a very big list and i didnt know which ones to dl.  i am assuming Toshiba actually did it for me?!?

Played oblivion for hours, no overheating. Ran great at uber high settings... until I got to the first bit of action. :lol:laugh.gif In the first fight things started going at 5fps... x_o I set it down to about medium-high settings and it ran beautifully. Battlefield 2 is still installing will report later. Had some hot air coming out the left side though. :)smile.gif No problem for me, since I'm right handed.

ZOMG there are so many pixels. O_O 1680*1050 is more pixels than I know what to do with! Very very nice. Wireless internet is exceptional. I can pick up our network from way down the street! Much better than my buddies'.

Whoah, I can set Counter Strike: Source even higher than bf2. This laptop has really pwnage graphics. crzyrble you need to get some gamez on yours and report how it performs. Yours can probably max out some of these games lol.

I have a sidewinder precision pro joystick and an air-flo joypad.

Sidewinder I got when I was like... 10 years old. Hehe, it's an old joystick, and it still pwns most of my friends'. It came bundled with MS Flight Simulator '98. :> I use it for flight simulators, and when you have to fly an airplane or helicoptor in an fps.

Joypad I got for the emulated gamez I have. N64, SNES, NES, GBA, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Neo Geo, anything in MAME, etc. etc. the list goes on and on. I can play pretty much any system that came out before the ps2.

@cryzbl: NOOOOOOO do NOT buy a logitech! They always break. All my  brothers and sisters have joypads too, and they went logitech. They must have gone through almost 5 each. I'm still on my 1st airflo. logitechs are eeeevvvviiiillll. I used to have a logitech headset, and guess what? It broke within 2 weeks. We used to have logitech speakers on one of our computers- guess what? They broke. :Ptongue.gif Oh, and make sure to buy the extended warranty on whatever one you get, just in case. (only $5- I know best buy has this, don't know about other stores)

I have never used a Logitech joystick, so I cannot comment on them.

But, Logitech makes the best trackballs that are very durable. The best way to game is via the keyboard and the Marble Mouse baby! :Ptongue.gif

I agree with you concerning most trackballs. I hate thumb trackballs!

Most trackballs are intended for your thumb. However, the Marble Mouse (above) utilizes your fingers. Very nice... Very accurate!!

REALLY???!! I like trackballs... the thumb ones... I don't think I could do that weird finger one there. O_O It seems too much like a touchpad and I loath touchpads. <_<dry.gif

@cryzbl: pj64 of course. :Ptongue.gif There is no other worth mentioning. pj64 v1.6 is a perfect and flawless emulation of the n64 as far as I can tell yet. I have not come across a game that had any errors. 1.5 still had some graphical issues on a few games, but 1.6 is excellent.

that air flo is a little over the top for me.  it seems rather big, and i dont really care for controllers with fans in them.  isnt cheap either...
i had a thumb trackball, or R.A.T. wasnt very accurate though.
