http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide

i dont know how many times i have refered to this to ensure i installed a few things correctly it has all the information you could need ^^

I just got my brothers old laptop, I installed windows 7 on one partition and I am planning to install Arch tomorrow :)
I'll now be able to be on a little bit more and I'll be able to host bots and stuff, at least until I have to take it with me somewhere :P
I'll post more about my laptop when I can, I've got a huge amount of updates to do first :P

I thought you got a brand new one with the contest money? o.O

Or did you buy his with the money?

Regardless I hope it helps you program calc stuff with more freedom now (including maybe Axe :P)

Not sure if you can play recent games but it should do for other stuff and some less recent games

Post by: Eeems on June 05, 2010, 01:32:04 am
Yeah, well it's over the minimum requirements for Portal, and windows 7 runs faster then vista or xp, so I can have a few less recent games :) yeah, it's good for what I need :P

I'm on 32 bit so I should be fine :P and yeah I'll be fine. I'll also be using Arch as my main OS most likely

I'm glad to hear things went well. I hope you do not have too many issues. Do you dual-boot with Windows 7 btw?
Title: Re: New Laptop

yes I do dual boot :)

Ok good because as great as Linux might be, I sometimes heard people complaining about compatibility with Windows softwares before. Example: Starcraft 1 on Battle.Net and RPG Maker VX database editor. (Wine)

Yeah I like my games, and I need windows to be compatible with the rest of the computers in my house (well except for my sisters mac-book...)

btw, in case anybody is interested, I'm running 64bit arch and my current front end is Gnome (I'll be getting KDE in a while)

Hmm, I just noticed there are two "New Laptop" topics x.x

And after looking at the other one again, I didn't knew you could use both a 32 bit and 64 bit OS on it x.x (in your case 32 bit 7 and 64 bit arch)

Yes, you can! I was actually dual booting Windows XP 32 bit and the Windows 7 64 bit beta until I got the full version of Windows 7. =)
Title: Re: New Laptop
Post by: Eeems on June 07, 2010, 12:20:18 pm
you can because they are on completely different partitions, so they don't rely on each other at all.

Aaaah ok I see ^^

So I'm wondering, what are the strengths of Gnome, KDE, LXDE and others of the like? Which one should I use as my primary?

If you don't have an underpowered system, I'd recommend GNOME or KDE. So as to avoid bias, I won't say which of those two I use. Realize which of those two you'll pick depends on which one "feels" better for you. I've also heard GNOME described as easier for new users, while KDE is more powerful. Both can probably do what you need, though. They're both good.
Edit: That reminds me, I need to install the one of those which I don't have yet...

My system is ok, but it's not the best, I guess I'll istall KDE and see if I like it. currently I have Gnome and LXDE.

Eeems, if you ever have issues you can always poke me as well when I'm in the chan, I've been using Arch the longest methinks, and have gotten quite a few printers working with it as well. :P
Title: Re: New Laptop

I LOVE KDE!!! but not as a light desktop I think I'll stick with LXDE for that, and Gnome if I need something a bit nicer....although I think I'll get rid of Gnome sometime....

JonimusPrime, sure I will poke you sometime...probably this weekend. Just to let you know it's a Brother printer on the LAN (through wifi) that I'm trying to use, so hopefully it will be easy.

Also any way I can make the KDE panel look more like win's? like, just show the icons?

good luck in setting everything up Eeems! Don't forget to do a lot of backups too, because I heard horror stories from a lot of people dual-booting with Linux and doing something wrong, screwing up their Windows install x.x

Thanks :)
I'll be careful, although I don't really care about my windows partition except for games.

Or for stuff that only is possible under Windows :P (and impossible in Wine)

Yeah that too...and I dont use wine yet.
