Title: Windows program shutting down randomly
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 06, 2007, 06:00:00 am
ANyone know what could cause windows programs to suddently shut down when the Open/Save as is open for more than 2-25 seconds? It happens to me all the time and its annoying when I need to save as and I lose everything, or having to reopen the app all the time. It happens with most 3rd party apps, like Photofiltre, Image Studio, etc.

If there is a fix for this could someone direct me to it?

It only do that in Windows XP

Hmm, how old is your windows install? Windows is known for getting f***ed up after awhile.

Have you tried replacing the RAM module(s) for your computer? Usually if programs quit unexpectedly (even in MacOS, not sure about Linux distributions) it's either because there isn't enough free RAM available or the RAM module that is in the computer does not agree with the computer all the time (aka isn't compatible with the motherboard)...

There was one program that used to do this to me. I can't think of the name though...

It was really weird. It would do the same thing that you described; open the save dialog, and then close about 2 seconds after I click on anything. I'm not sure what is causing it. It only used to happen on that one program for me.

Could it be using .net framework? Maybe there is an error in the .net framework.

Really? Is there anything common between those three computers other than their operating system?

If it's mostly imaging software that's crashing your compy, it's most likely that you're trying to save too big of pictures, and the software itself has crappy memory management. Only real thing you can do is save often and run only one or two programs at a time :(sad.gif

this sucks, i guess most freeware programs have issues with this then

I wouldn't exactly blame it on freeware. I think it is just the programmers. Windows Movie Maker does this too me a lot though.

really? I had no problems with saving/opening files on it, nor any other microsoft programs. it just happens with most freeware stuff (not all tho), maybe most programmers miss one important thing in their debugging process that make them do that.

else its my comp or windows install, but it would be weird because all my previous xp install did that

Hmm yeah it generally happens a lot to me with WMM and Microsoft Word. Although they save backup files every 10 minutes for which I am thankful. Or else I would be pulling my hair out right now, but they still do crash usually.

Or perhaps a better set of programing standards that adress issues like these.  Besides, xp is infinitely nicer than vista...(*cries* because higher end pc with vista preloaded sucks more than several year old xp laptop)

I guess that is why Dell has become kind of popular these days (they can pre-load XP instead of Vista in about 66% of their computers, as well as pre-loading Ubuntu in some of their desktops)...

I disagree, my Vista PC owns my XP PC(dual boot. :Ptongue.gif) the XP one had major issues with my motherboard even on a new install. Vista gets better FPS in games, and everything than the XP install did.

there is nothing wrong with Vista. I am a Vista user, and I like it.

*cough*

... okay, I gave Vista a go TWICE now, and both times have been very disappointed. There is a severe dearth of good drivers for pretty much any piece of hardware that I own, half the programs I like to use crash to desktop or do other random things, and all games suffer huge drops in performance. Oh and have I mentioned there complete and utter lack of opengl support?! I gave it a go when it first came out and it sucked, and then when I built my new ownage computer I tried vista again on my windows partition. I figured hell, it's been over 6 months, they should have decent drivers by now and have worked out all the bugs right? WRONG. So far as I can tell, Vista's one good thing is that the stock theme looks pretty. Anyways, I shall never touch it again. :knight:knight3.gif

usually it take around 2-3 years formost programs to be compatible with a new OS. *cough*TI-Connect*cough* And i heard lot of people had problems with game being slower on Vista than XP. Maybe it's because of the high memory requirements though.

But the problem is that the jump is so huge between Vista and XP. While XP Professional can run at 20 MB RAM and an 8 Mhz processor (even if it is very slow), Vista can't run properly at 512 MB RAM.

true, windows should never have waited more than half a decade to release a new PC OS, the jump is way too high. Look at the previous OSes, there's never more than 2 years I think between each of them:
