Title: Transition to battle; suggestions appreciated...
Post by: Iambian on February 08, 2010, 03:59:03 pm
... as long as it doesn't require 3KB or more of dedicated memory.
(j/k).
But seriously. Zera was halfway worried that what I had done was taking up the majority of the page dedicated to the engine. If anything, I can probably move the code off to another page, but still. Can't have something like transition code taking up half a page by itself.

I planned on making a poll but I don't have enough entries yet to justify it. So here's what I've got.

That having been said, suggestions are welcome.

EDIT: Added an earlier screenshot. That diamond wipe was a little too fast and I remember DJ Omnimaga asking me to slow it down. The latter image is of that.

EDIT2: Added a rough spiral effect.

EDIT3: Added a finer spiral effect.

EDIT4: Added a pre-transition effect pack here: http://ourl.ca/4092/75757

I don't really understand what the poll would be about. :( (Sorry)

Those screenies look really-amazingly-awesomely-great! ;D

The second I don't think so. The others are great, specially the first one.
If I add to choose between them, it would be the first.

I think you could do a random transition or the transition depends on the monster or place. (bosses could have a special transition)

I don't really understand what the poll would be about.

Iambian is wanting feedback on the different styles, and what the community thinks would be most appropriate. For that matter, if you have any suggestions for other transition effects, that would also help.

Pokemon spiral wipe to black FTW.

I think he's trying to not take up a lot of space. Having all of them would probably not help there.

That being said, I say stick with the first one, IMO.
Looks pretty~

Pokemon spiral wipe to black FTW.

lol, I knew someone was going to suggest the PokéMon transitions at some point.

I already suggested a slash-wipe, but the routine would be just a bit too complex. :(

I like the first one as well ^^

While I'm at this topic, much more could be said if there was code attached to the post to render any particular effect. If it's feasible, I'll do the conversion between normal buffer to my vertically-aligned grayscale buffer.

If you don't happen to have any code, don't worry! Just post your suggestions.

Oh, and the point of the poll would be to determine the particular transition between [1] Normal encounters [2] Boss battles, and [3] Decisive battles. But I need a bigger pool to choose from.

EDIT: Added another picture to the first post. Read more about it in the edited part.

For clarification, decisive battles would be fights against bosses relative to the main storyline, or events such as the final battle. (generally, all the more gruelling bosses you'll encounter)

Oh, I see.  I like the first and fifth ones. :)

I'm really lovin #3 and #4. The vertical and horizontal wipes are classic and look great. How about a circular clockwise wipe? Are you going to use more than one of these?

My favourite is the last one. I like the first too but it's a bit too fast I think.

i like the second to last one, but personally i think the best option would be a lobster shadow growing from the center till the screen has been fully wiped to black, if you get what i mean :X

You are of course correct.

Added another transition to the first post located here: http://ourl.ca/4092/75560

Very simple transition, abuses grayscale concept to provide optical illusion and makes great use of the vertically-aligned buffer.

EDIT[2]: Scratch the previous edit. I'll just upload the fullspeed version to Omnimaga. Remember. Use Firefox or Opera for full effect. IE or Chrome won't cut the mustard.

WOW! I love that one. Maybe you could use it as boss fight transition. Else if you plan to use the same for every battle, then switch to this one maybe.

I recall Reuben Quest using similar effects before, for some animations, but I'm not sure anymore

My thoughts, too. This one would be good for bosses.

I kinda prefer Opera, Chrome and Firefox, altough Firefox has its shares of crashes too

Hopefully I didn't have sound.

The transition is a """little""" exaggerated... xD

Now, we're getting somewhere. Oh, and no lobsters. At the moment.

Spiral one is pretty sweet too! =D I hope you keep and use a variety of these in game.

I like the spiral one ^^, is it me or does it reminds me one of the Dragon Warrior games for the NES?

Hmm i actually don't care for the spiral one as much :/

The spiral needs to have smaller blocks.

The spiral needs to have smaller blocks.
That's being worked on. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it last night, so I'll be working on it (and hopefully be finished by) today. All of my paper notes are in order.

I thought the spiral effect was pretty nice; although, I didn't think it necessarily needed any adjustments. Looks great as it is. :)

I like the spiral one, but I'd rate them like this (best to worst):
6,5,1,4,7,3,2
They're all great. :)

Added an additional spiral effect to the first post: http://ourl.ca/4092/75560

A quickly-growing thread? I'd like to believe it.

Can you make the smaller spiral spiral out (keep the first half the same), but then instead of spiraling back in can it spiral out again?  The second part would fill in the gaps left by the first spiral and look the same, but it would be offset to fill the gaps left by the first part.  Does this makes sense?  Will you try it?  Thanks! :)

I don't really want to do that for more than one reason:
1. I want the player character to be visible until the very end of the transition.
2. Them lookup tables are very large, and very specific to how they're drawn. Changing the animation in any way would require redoing the tables. Not fun.

Doing the fade to white (demonstrated only on IRC) was easy in the fact that I had to change what was filled, not *how* it was filled.

Sorry.

I'm just not digging the spirals, sorry to say D:

My favorite is still the very first one, and also the triple fade to black wiper thingy for things like boss fights maybe ^^

Very nice!, It turns out I actually like the second spiral alot better that the first spiral! I like the longer fill time, and the size of the blocks actually does seem better.

I've been playing around with pre-transition effects that modify the screen in a ... certain way. I'll have to upload the effects pack sometime later. No, I'm not going to post each image individually. That would take up way too much time. Instead, I figure I'll just .zip them all together to save both my time and yours.

Oh, and if you're really into saving time when viewing the masses of images, go check out IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/). It features a nifty slideshow feature that lets you go through images at the push of a button (spacebar for "next" and backspace for "previous")

You know. In preparation for what I'm gonna throw at you.

That's why there's gonna be a poll when I'm done building all the transitions I can (or want to) code. There's gonna be debate as to what effect will be best for the game. I don't doubt that.

EDIT: Whoo! Page topper! :P

i assume you still plan 3 effects to be used, right? (random encounters, bosses and final boss)

Yeah. There will be those three.

Also, I compiled some pre-transition effects that I mentioned a bit earlier. Some suggestions that might help you get prepared or something were found on this post: http://ourl.ca/4092/75735

The first post will link back to this post. Whee! Cross-referencing posts left and right :P

EDIT: The names of these effects are in the order they're numbered:
Code: [Select]
;00 ShiftToWhite
;01 ShiftToBlack
;02 MergeToGrays
;03 MergeToMono
;04 SwapGrayLayers
;05 SwapAllLayers
;06 GetLightGray

EDIT2: Each animation uses the same transition. I lengthened the time between the pre-transition effect and transition to make it clear what effect I was using. Forget about trying to apply all these combinations to every transition I have. I want the game to be released sometime this decade :P

wow these looks like how they switch colors on a NES palette. I wonder, could such effects be used for example as fade-in/fade-out between certain screen switches that are not transition between maps? It would look old-skool

2: 05 SwapAllLayers
3: 04 SwapGrayLayers

To be honest, none of these effects really seem to indicate a transition, or would seem to indicate that you're about to get into an encounter. It's mainly the fact that only a single color is affected. If the colors could somehow rotate, or there could be a flashing effect, that would appear a lot better.

On the other hand, I did think the 5th effect was pretty good. An inversion catches the player's attention, and seems more closely indicative that you're about to enter into combat.
Title: Re: Transition to battle; suggestions appreciated...
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2010, 04:47:12 pm
color (well... grayscale) rotation could be an idea ^^, just don't do it too fast else it will not look as good, especially on the TI-Nspire where the screen blurs slower
Title: Re: Transition to battle; suggestions appreciated...
Post by: Zera on February 11, 2010, 04:51:33 pm
If I'm not mistaken, I don't think WabbitEmu's GIF capture will really capture flashing effects. (or rather, I don't think the emulator itself seems to display them correctly) It's possible they already flash or rotate, and we just can't see it. :P
Title: Re: Transition to battle; suggestions appreciated...
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2010, 06:21:19 pm
it depends of the emulator settings, really. If set too blurry, they'll not display fine. The new Wabbitemu has more LCD settings, but screenshooting doesn't work well (unless BuckeyeDude fixed it recently?)

That said I am impatient to create a video of this game set to Trauma Center Second Opinion music, to post on Youtube because it deserves a lot of views. I guess I still have to wait for basic battles to be implemented first, though :P
