Well, let's list them. List the name and the reason. :D
1. Castlevania: Aria of sorrow
Soul drop rate O.o
-
2. The Impossible Game
Well, that ^
-
3. I Wanna Be the Guy.
-
4: Any Pokemon game
Need multiple games+consoles, also, it's pokemon :P
-
5: Spider-Man 2
-
6: Star Ocean: The Second Story. By far, because it's actually impossible.
If you let Ashton join your party, you can't get Opera or vice-versa. The problem is that some quests, new characters and items requires Opera to be in your party, while other quests requires Ashton. Also when the game starts you have to choose between Rena and Claude, causing similar problems. Basically it's even worse than the Pokémon situation. :P
Also for Pokémon I think you can 100% Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum, since they're merged versions of their same gen counterpart, where you can get every Pokémon (at the cost of much slower leveling up IIRC). I could be wrong, though
-
7: Cheetahmen II
Some says that it's the worst game ever made, the second Level 3 of this rare unreleased game actually have no exit whatsoever after the boss, thus making the game impossible to finish unless you either get a very rare glitch that lets you start the game on the two remaining levels or you play a hacked ROM.
-
Hmm.
Singularity on the xbox is now pretty much impossible to get every achievement for since it's community is near dead now.
Same for Halo Wars.
-
Lotr, l'âge des conquêtes, same reasons
-
10: Sonic Genesis version
I'm pretty sure 100% run means 100% ring run. :P
-
Do you mean Sonic Genesis as in the GBA port that had Genesis in the title or the actual Sega Genesis original?
-
I'm talking about the original one.
(I refuse to play the GBA port)
-
Ok thanks, and good idea. Apparently that GBA port in particular is one of the worst games ever made, because Sonic moves slower, the music quality is bad and there are many introduced glitches making the game close to impossible. In fact that would be a great addition to this topic since it's even harder to 100% than its original version. :P
-
not to mention the "block of sight" just like Megaman&Bass O.o
-
Do you mean the smaller field of view?
-
yeah.
-
Maybe I just suck at it, but Fallout New Vegas on hardcore mode is pretty difficult.
-
11. Metroid fusion
Some of the items requires really good skill of shinesparking O.o
-
12: The impossible game
EDIT: Just noticed that DJ_O already posted that so....
12: Super Mario Bros Lost Levels
-
actually, Lost Levels are not too hard if you played a lot of Mario games though.
-
Well, I didn't so they are impossible for me XD
-
13. FFV It's difficult to get 100% of all chests because at some points you are on a close time limit to leave an area and quite a few chests are only available for that time.
-
Gran turismo 2 US version. Due to time constraints, the drag racing wasn't implemented. This leaves the game percentage (in the game there is a percentage indicator) impossible to reach 100
-
Sonic Adventure 2/Battle, Sonic Heroes, & Shadow The Hedgehog... these games always frustrated the hell out of me to the point that i gave up and realized getting all emblems/A ranks were not worth the trouble... as long as i finished the game(s), thats all I cared about, lol
-
Not sure how it was called, but that Sonic game for the DS. I never could get past the water levels...
-

I'm guessing you mean Sonic Rush/Rush Adventure... cause they were pretty frustrating too, lol
-
MTV Music Generator is impossible to 100% too.
-
Tetris
-

Sounds frustrating :$
19. World of Goo > OCD (obsessive completion distinction)
-
MTV Music Generator is impossible to 100% too.
I see what you did there.
-
Well imo Sonic Rush was not that hard even though I totally suck at Sonic games. In the water level (water park or something) I had no problem by just spamming boost to stay on top of the water as long as possible.
-
20. Chrono Trigger
Some of the quests are completely non-obvious, and If you're not careful you miss the best armors in the game.
Also, you have to choose between armor that drops damage to 1/3, or a weapon that does more damage, IIRC. I always took the armor :P
-
Then you should take the weapon for a change :p
-
That's about 20-30 hours of gameplay in, though, and it doesn't do much when you're really magic focused.
-
21. The Binding of Isaac + Wrath of the Lamb expansion
22. Nethack, Angband, ADOM (mostly b/c of the infinite dungeon ;D), so basically, any traditional roguelike!
-
10: Sonic Genesis version
I'm pretty sure 100% run means 100% ring run. :P
Sonic 2 (and not Sonic 1 or 3&K) will give you a 50,000 point bonus (which in turn gives you a 1-up) if you get every free-standing ring in an act. See my videos EHZ1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLGbBRiPXiY&list=UUMrBexkDAu416p5oDHsSxXw&index=8), EHZ2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VphX9-Cg-ps&list=UUMrBexkDAu416p5oDHsSxXw&index=7), CPZ1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYdWdTxHBsY&list=UUMrBexkDAu416p5oDHsSxXw&index=5), and CPZ2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJtWHr5bTbI&list=UUMrBexkDAu416p5oDHsSxXw&index=19). Also see this TAS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BklXjZ85IYc), which seems to have stolen my CPZ 1 and 2 routes.

Realm of the mad god:
Permadeath + hard to begin with
-
What is permadeath?
Also the GBA port of Sonic The Hedgehog that was renamed to Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is particularly hard. There are so many bugs that you randomly die everywhere for absolute no reason.
-
-Conker's Pocket Tales (i never found all the presents)
-Mickey's Dangerous Chase, both for Gameboy-Color
-
Is Conker's related in any way to Conker's Bad Fur Day?

permadeath = no respawn

Jop, it's conker the squirrel :)
i think "Pocket Tales" was released two years before "Bad Fur Day"
(Although i never played Bad Fur Day :()

Well, technically it's impossible to 100%, as there's no real end :P
So it doesn't really count :P

This and the fact that there are multiple endings that are affected by in game actions. That means you would have to replay the game multiple times to see all the endings.
@DJ_O permadeath= Permanent Death

Since it's on Steam as FTP, and has achievements, you can 100% :P

Does THE GAME count on this list?

I lost... :'(

Darn it...

Rick Astley can win it easily

Rick Astley can win it easily
Thats right, hes never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you
never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
:D
-
Not sure if this counts, but would "Legand of Zelda: Sord of Atari" (sic) be a valid example of game that is hard to 100%? I made the game myself and I can't even beat the 1st dungeon O.O (it's actually possible, though)
Also Ghosts n' Goblins (at least on the NES) and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts (to a lesser extent) are other examples.
-
Try to beat Doodle Jump with 100% :P
-
SNES games I own I find hard to 100%:
Donkey kong country: Level memorization and fast reflexes are required to make it trough the levels. In world 3 I cannot get past stage 3-1. I did it once, but I couldn't save...
Last action hero: Stage 1 is unbeatable especially if you try really hard. I don't even want to play this game.
Super metroid: Not because it's a hard game, but some secrets remain well hidden.
Super mario world: Because of that castle with the moving platform snake on which you have to stand for the entire stage.
Super R-type: I finally got to stage 3 only to get my ass handed to me.
Street fighter II: On normal mode ofc. Some of the non-playable fighters just kick my ass with cheaty special moves.
-
Yeah DKC is quite hard indeed. It really makes you have to learn how to beat action/platform games with only 1 HP and 2 characters rather than relying on an energy bar.
As for SMW I found it easy but that stage you mentionned as well as the dungeon that has the huge spikes going down incredibly fast is hard. Another hard game is Mortal Kombat II. I didn't play the other MK games much so I can't judge, but I can't even beat the last guy in easy mode.
-
For the PSX: Alundra. It's a zelda-style game.
-
Is it just very hard or is it just near impossible to find all items? I have the 2nd game but didn't have time to play it much yet.
-
A little bit of both.
-
I'd have to say Super Mario Galaxy II, and Sonic Heroes. This is due to the fact that you have to get all A rank in every single stage (I have the world record for one stage, though! Better than the TAS?!) and then Super Hard Mode opens up and suddenly you wish you had died before you finished.
-
Super Crate Box (not mine, the original by Vlambeer). While I did more than 200 in normal mode, I can't get past 40 in SFMT and 14 in Ambush ;_;
-

Meh, it is not even a game, it is a torture :P
I can't even reach the second key x.x
-
Hayleia, I wish I could do it but no CSE..
I created a "Mario X" level pack for the Mario on calcs. It's fricking hard
-

I am a bit tempted to make a video if I ever get a CSE ROM (I can't because I can't get the ROM dumper to work on my computer), but I'm afraid that the atrocious look of the game and its simple gameplay per Zelda standards might make me lose subscribers and get less views (I could care less if it gets a dislike ratio worse than Rebecca Black - Friday), because 90% of Youtube don't know how to read.
-
Adventures of Bayou Billy, PAL version.
I made a test on it. Lasted 45mins.
Difficulty hardened on PAL. Normal guys need 6 punches to die. Crocodiles are almost invicible and you need to kill two to advance in the first level. You just can't finish the first level.
-
Has this already been mentioned? Games where you can't win and you can't lose.
Eg: Minecraft, Garry's Mod to name a few.
-
Where's Derpy, by far.
Just kidding :P (I'm not even into MLP and I still could 100% it in 30 minutes)
The NSMB games can be a bit hard to 100%. The games by themselves are very easy (too much, in fact), but some star coins are incredibly hard to find or reach and there are 3 per stages. Also, many warp or bonus stages can be next to impossible to find compared to older Mario games.
-

Well, for minecraft, I'm gonna say that getting 100% would entail mining/processing every block in the in-game world, which is 10 million * 10 million, IIRC. So, hard to 100%, to say the least.
-
I honestly think Ocarina of Time is impossible to beat, every time I reach the water temple somehow I open the wrong door with a key and I have to restart my whole game. This has happened three times now.. -.-
-
Ah, the water temple is just a pain in the ass. I've beaten it before, but I was trying to play through the game again (on my 3ds) and I couldn't get through it for the life of me.You'll feel amazing when you beat it, like you are invincible! After that, you shouldn't have too much trouble. I'd encourage you to keep going, Ocarina of time is such an amazing game. <3
Also, I'm not sure if open world games should really count, as they really have no ultimate goal (many of them). This list should be more of, this game is really hard or games that require you to do a lot to get a 100% completion.
-
3DS Water Temple? Made without Zora Tunic...
-

I guess that for minecraft, getting into the end and killing the ender dragon counts as finishing it, as you then see the credits. You don't have to process every block to win, same as you don't have to kill everyone of the other side to win a war.
-
I didn't even know there were bosses in Minecraft.
And yeah I remember the Water Temple in Zelda was particularly long and hard. My 84+ game Zelda: Dark Link Quest actually paid some tribute to that temple by having its own Water Temple that is basically half of the game's lenght.
-
Dj_Omnimaga, there isn't just the Ender Dragon, there is the Witch and the Wither too... IMO the WIther is the most dangerous (big explosion at start + projectile resistance at mid-HP + HP regeneration + deadly porjectiles)
-

Wouldn't say the witch counts as a boss; it's just a regular mob ;)

I'd Definetley count the Ghosts 'n Goblin Series due to sheer difficulty. Also, Sliver Surfer on the NES. That game is stupid hard.
