Now the stupid question, coming from someone who doesn't have a 3DS (yet). What are those friend codes for ? Play multiplayer games ? Exchange things ? I am really curious.

Old Nintendo way to connect two 3DS, useful to avoid undesired connexions with random dudes. On Games like mario Kart, you don't have to share friend codes, you can play with random players, but if you want to meet a friend in a game, you'll need his/her firend code. it's like a gamertag or something else.

Why not use nicknames then ? ???

This is just my thought, but maybe children want their names as nickname but the net can't support an infinite number of Arthur and Kimia :P
So either the children have to accept to be called Arthur89 and Kimia57 or let them be called the way they want but differentiate them with those friend codes.

Does it mean old games will support them too?

Nintendo hasn't confirmed that it will be used for anything other than linking eShop funds and Miiverse, so my guess is that it won't be used for the friend list.

Ah well, at least I'm glad I won't need two eShop accounts anymore now. It was quite surprising to me when I got my Wii U and when I entered my 3DS info it said my account didn't exist. I thought my account was deleted due to inactivity and didn't realize I needed a separate one for both consoles.

I should share my friend code actually when I grab my DS again. I played Mario Kart with Calc84maniac a few times a few years ago. Other than MK I mostly have RPGs or Mario games, though.

I should check what was my 3DS friend code. I prefer the nickname style gamertags like on Xbox Live and I think the Wii U uses gamer tags now so I always forget my 3DS friend code >.<.

Ok here is my friend code:  2964-8767-2008. In the future, if Nintendo finally gets rid of friend codes then replace them with actual gamertags like on Xbox Live, then I am "Omnimaga" there.

What games do you guy play by the way? When it comes to online games, I mostly played Mario Kart 7.
