Title: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: whitevalkery on March 09, 2010, 10:37:10 pm
I KNOW I AM!
and the closed beta is out...

did any of you guys sign up for it?
i didn't because at the sign up time i was too lazy lol :(

lets discuss the new units and the old but modified units here!

p.s. i think the medic has been removed! :( (but the drop ship now has the ability to heal) kinda odd if you ask me...

Unfortunately, I was not selected in this round of beta-testing...

If I am not next round, I might figure out an alternate way to get my hand on a beta, though, altough since it's against the rules I'll not discuss further about it here :P

I did not have time to check all units yet, but I saw some vids and it looked awesome. Apparently gameplay is as fast as SC. I guess they learned their lesson from Warcraft 3 (this game was so slow paced. It took 5 minutes to build buildings and the unit cap of 90 sucked!!!!!!)

One thing, though: I heard at many places that Battle.Net for SC 2 will be like WoW: There will be monthly fees. Idk if it's just rumors, though, and if it's true. I hope not, otherwise if it costs as much as WoW, I'm gonna either stick to SC1 until someone figure out a way to play online for free.

Post by: whitevalkery on March 09, 2010, 11:02:44 pm
WHAT!?
impossible! they can't put monthly fees on an RTS!? they wont get any money from that!
since its not an MMORG you aren't sucked in to the game to have an urge to keep bettering your character... but an RTS is just making your actually control skills better... so if you ask me, i think that doesn't make any sense... plus none of my friends said anything about this...

nor was there any rumors like this on d3jsp.org... so i hope they are just rumors...

one thing that people seriously did not like about starcraft 2 is that they removed the lan system... so you have to buy the game and play online...
other then that... i dont think there is anything else... if there was something about a monthly fee... then it would be flooding over he internet too... so i dont think thats true... otherwise i will hate blizzard for the rest of my life lol...

btw... i agree with you on the warcraft III thing lol... 90 units is nothing...

oh... and did you know that korea already started having official matches with starcraft 2???

Yeah I hope it's just a rumor. I just saw this on some gaming new sites a few months ago

Also, I used to lose hope for SC2 earlier last year, because it seemed to go the same way SC ghost did: IN Oct 2008, released date got pushed back to Dec 08, then again in oct 2009, then dec 09, then 2010, then finally, all we would get in 2010 is a beta. I was afraid SCII was getting discontinued like Ghost :/. Finally the beta came out, though, and I am really happy.

I really hope they won't make it paid online. Again, if it's like $20 a year, I won't mind, though. But still I hope it's free like other RTSes to play online.

I don't know, with the anticipation that it has been building the past couple years I wouldn't doubt if they do have a monthly fee. Though I doubt it would be like $20. I would guess more like $5-10 maybe. Just because it isn't an MMORPG doesn't mean people don't get obsessed with it. I would bet if DotA had put a price on there's many people would have paid :P It's silly, but business is business.

yeah... wow is like 60 dollars per month... thats just BS
and if starcraft 2 is 20 a year... then i say mehh...  :-X

but ya... :) DEATH TO BLIZZARD IF THEY MAKE US PAY MONTHLY!!!)
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?

Since when was WoW $60 a month? My friend only pays like $15.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: jmaster797 on March 09, 2010, 11:56:24 pm
I play WoW and its a $15 monthly fee. They wouldn't charge any fee for SC2 besides buying the game itself. Any monthly/yearly fee to play SC2 online would never work because no one would go for it for an extended period of time.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 10, 2010, 12:13:11 am
Does SC2 supports leveling up like in Halo 3? I mean some online games will let you increase in rankings when winning and winning. Maybe people will play more to rise higher, and that may make them addicted more. If that's the case, that might be an excuse for people to continue paying.

Also be careful with WoW, there are many people who ruined their lives with this drug. In 2005, I saw like 5 people leave the TI community because instead of coding, they spent their entire days on WoW. x.x And WoW is not the only game like this, because my bro nearly ruined his life (and mine) twice with a MMORPG, specifically in Spring 2008 and 2009. Some people here knows what I am talking about. I had to block Paypal, Outspark store and all places where he could buy items  on my router.

I'm pretty careful with WoW. I started about 5 months back, before I joined this forum, and I'm still active in coding and somewhat active in WoW (I'm not max level yet, which is something my guild kinda patronizes me with daily...). Besides, if I don't finish the games I already started, it would bother me to no end. Regardless of if I play WoW or not, the projects you see in my signature will be completed and you guys will be the first to know it. :)

Good to hear. I know Rcfreak0 plays WoW on IRC but he is still somewhat here, just far less much. I think he's in the LV 80s or something.

Geno plays WoW sometimes, too, but only on private servers since he doesn't want to pay the monthly fee.

Btw, about RTSes, there is one thing I disliked about SC1: connection speed is throttled to dialup speeds in game. If you download a map, it will never download faster than 4 KB/sec even if everyone has cable. In Warcraft III, this is not as bad, but I hope SC2 fixes this because the following was a VERY NICE WC3 map!

EDIT: lol http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/9164/rr4u.jpg no music of course but I lol'ed. I wonder if it's fake? I know there are porn maps on SC :P

mehh... the only MMORG like game thats good i have played is probably runescape lol...
and MegaTen but now i dont play any of the much... they get boring... and i just dont feel like myself in the games at all lol...

so ya... i am more of a fan of the games in which your actual control skills are involved... not some stupid strings and routines telling you if you will win or loose a battle...

thats how i think anyways... i dont really like MMORGs that much... some of my other friends tired to make me join WoW... i started for like a week on someone else's account and got bored lol... never really started... :P

Nice vids DJ! lol that was hilarious.
And I am sooo waiting for Blizzard to release SC2. I wouldn't want the monthly payment tho.
I was never a fan of WC3 or WoW. Never played Wow, don't think I ever will, and I really didn't like WC3's hero system, so I was never really caught into WC3 except may be their Tower Defense.

I love RTS, and favorites are definitely Starcraft and also Command and Conquer Red Alert 2. I played Red Alert 3, but I really had a crappy computer back then, and the game lagged most of the time, so I never caught on to that either.

Back to the topic, I kind of have a general knowledge of SC2, what their units are, etc. since I used to follow the SC2 forum, but now, I got tired of waiting for the release and don't even visit...

Hell, yeah, I am excited. It has being one big waiting with delays...

And I won't pay to play it online, it is one RTS, after all.
I saw the video, and seems they maintained a bit the menus and general appearance.

I don't like RTS with fancy graphics but bad gameplay/strategy. I hope it doesn't happen with SC2.

p.s. i think the medic has been removed! :( (but the drop ship now has the ability to heal) kinda odd if you ask me...

They did this because medics would not be able to keep up with Reapers as they jumped up and down slopes.  The dropship solves this problem, and it also means that one doesn't have to full the dropship with any medics

that reminds me, I am really curious when the next batch of beta-testing starts. I wonder if I,m gonna be selected then. I hope they don't choose people based on if they own all Blizzard games that can be registered on the site by their user, which means SC, WCIII, WCIIIe, Diablo II and all WoW expansions... I only got both WCIII, SC and WCII.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: Zera on March 28, 2010, 12:54:05 pm
I'm kind of interested in it. I really didn't have much of an interest in StarCraft until a friend convinced me to try it. It was pretty fun, if only for the multiplayer value. I may check out the Protoss version of SC2 when it's released, since that's the only race I play.

My only concern is the system requirements. My PC is a bit... legacy. I only recently upgraded to 512 MB of RAM. :P
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 28, 2010, 12:57:00 pm
Ouch I doubt it will run it x.x, I heard it will have higher requirements than some alerady existing games, altough still much less than certain. Basically, I think a dual-core with 256 MB graphic card with Pixel shading support will run it.

I wonder if it supports Windows XP?
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: Zera on March 28, 2010, 01:05:27 pm
Damn. I didn't think the requirements were that steep. I'm only using a single-core Sempron processor. That's like AMD's version of the Celeron. :P

Surprisingly, I've managed some good performance out of this computer. Of course, I've also tweaked the hell out of it. I got Tomb Raider: Anniversary to run almost flawlessly on minimum settings. That's probably the most robust game I've installed.

As for compatibility - that's sometimes easy to overcome. When I was still using Windows 2000, there were a number of programs that claimed they were only designed to run under XP or newer. Sometimes, you can extract the setup files from the initial executable and install them that way. (some are packaged into installers that detect your OS version and don't proceed with the actual, archived installers inside of them) Boy, those were the days... I remember getting a few newer programs to work flawlessly on my system, despite the program having no official support for my OS.

I was actually thinking about downgrading to Windows NT 4. Perverse curiousity. :P

On my old PC, I could run some old games fine after changing my video card, but I still couldn't run games like Supreme Commander, since the video card still was too cheap. The issue is that the mobo had no PCI Express nor AGP slots, just regular PCI slots, meaning I was limited to old cards and RAM types.

I don't really need a hardcore PC for gaming, since I don't game that much, but I happened to have a spare load amount of money lately and bought something more powerful than what I planned to buy. Basically, Unreal Tournament 2004 runs at 91 FPS with everything maxed out including 1920x1080 res, and 70-79 when I turn my graphic card anti-aliasing to x2 (30-40 on extremly complex maps with transparent objects, tho). For Audiosurf I also play maxed out, while on my old computer, I got low framerate and glitchy graphics even at low settings x.x

Compatibility wise, do you just mean changing a .exe file into a .zip file then unzipping all? Or simply copying the CD files to your computer? When I torrented Unreal Tournament 2004 I did not even need to install anything. I just copied the files. Doesn't that cause registry problems, though?
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: Zera on March 28, 2010, 01:27:42 pm
Err, what I meant was that some installer packages are actually self-extracting archives. Inside of these archives are, ironically, other installer packages. If you extract them and run them, they usually install without verifying your OS version. The self-extracting installer is usually the part of the installer that includes the verification and such.

(you can extract them using 7-zip, WinRAR, etc. without changing the extension)

ooh ok, I see, because for some files, you can rename them to zips, like TI-Nspire calculator OSes, and they will contain stuff inside.

A friend of mine got it recently, and gets clobbered daily. ::) I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but he says it's a lot like the original, but with more units added and the 'lings can be rushed lots easier. He also says everyone gets air way too fast, but that might be just because he stinks. :P
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 10, 2010, 11:31:12 pm
Mhmm I hear a lot of comments saying it's good and a lot like the original. That's a good sign. I was worried they made it like WC3: way slower paced than WC2. I heard it was quite fast, so I will sure enjoy it when it comes out (or if I ever get allowed in a beta run).

Also it takes a long while to be good at the game. I myself played SC for years and still have a losing record on Battle.Net :(

It's probably because other people are also getting better at it too o.o So don't worry too much.

Yeah, I heard the game is pretty fast-paced, and watching the videos on youtube and stuff, they look epic! Although some stuff look a bit complicated x.x Usually, games that come out now are so complicated that sometimes it takes a while to get used to the control, especially shooting games or RPGs.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 11, 2010, 01:33:41 pm
Well on SC 1 there are people with like 8000-2000-50 records. I recall some guy called Binoooo having such record. They often spend all day/night on that game x.x

Another thing I hope with sc2 is that it's not too hard to click units. One thing I have issues with at SC is trying to click larvas or moving drones, the later of which hinders me when it comes to splitting at the beginning.

Guess what I just found out... It's the worst news EVER!
Okay, after searching through Google (my best friend) and finding out that you can get a cracked version of Starcraft 2 beta, I immediately went for it. The speculated system specification said that minimum RAM is 512MB, and my computer exactly had 512MB (phew!). The Speed was good, my computer being 2.80GHz, and SC2 requiring around 1.5(?)GHz. So I was like, yes! My computer's not too old!
This Cracked version allows people to play SC2 singleplayer with AI. After 2 hours of hassling with installation and such, I finally got all the things I needed. I got to the launcher, downloaded Lost Temple map, set my race as Zerg, set Computer as random, and pressed launch.
Then, the computer screen went into a black screen, and I was waiting for the logo things to pop up, and so happy that I will finally be able to play starcraft 2! But what greeted me was an error message...

It said that I do not have a good enough graphics card. SC2 requires Something called Vertex Shader at least 2.0, and it seems like my computer don't have that supported. FAIL!
So, I can't play SC2 because my computer's crappy. (Well, I don't own this computer, this is like the house computer thing) We got this computer around 2003~2004. Really old -_-;;;
I guess I'll just have to wait until my college gives me my macbook (Yes, the college I'm going to gives me full scholarship, and a macbook)...
So the point is, my life sucks and if you don't want to end up like me, upgrade graphics card once in a while!
That's my bad news.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?

Yeah, I had to upgrade my graphics card for Supreme Commander 1 and 2...otherwise my 5 year old computer works well for the program
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 24, 2010, 02:47:05 am
ouch sorry to hear jsj795. TO be fair, I had big doubts my old machine could do it either, though. I haven't tried yet but I'm certain it can't. It ran Half Life 2 at like 15 fps with low settings after all.

My new PC will most likely do it, though.

I thought about trying a cracked version but I'm worried of viruses that will get detected only one year later and then too late the damage is done.

Btw I got an hold on a beta SCII copy and it's friggin epic. I cannot play in Multiplayer since I have no CD-key but I downloaded a hack with AI scripts and a launcher to play in single player meelee mode. At maxed out settings 1920x1080 and got something around 30 FPS, both with and without recording. If I set the game at 1366x768 res, I get something close to 40-50 when not recording

Some hotkeys were changed and some units appeared, but I got in the game kinda fast since I played SC1 a lot.

Want to play the beta? Go to gamestop and pre-order the game. The receipt has a beta-key on it. Register a Bnet account at www.Battle.Net, click "add game", then enter the cdkey on the receipt.

Mhmm spambot account or legit user?

If it's the later, then hi and welcome here.

Thanks for the advice either way. Over here, in Canada, where I live, Gamestop is called EBGames, but they're owned by Gamestop so maybe they'll also do it. I could maybe try at Future Shop otherwise, since the site mentions about pre-ordering there too.

Totally just a new user. I programmed a couple games on my calculator, tried the whole Rendering bit with no knowledge of Xlib or anything fancy like that... and fell on my face. I am currently looking for a ti-basic greyscale tut. Can you help?

Oooh ok good to hear. We tend to have automatic registered bots here who advertise game sites, Casinos, travelling agencies and even adult material every now and then, and the post looked similar to theirs ;D

That said for calc questions you might want to use the appropriate forum section for that (calc help and support), otherwise, people will easily miss your question and this thread will go off-topic.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?
Post by: midgetman66 on May 12, 2010, 12:16:41 am
Ahh, understood. And of course! what was I thinking? I post on many forums. That simply makes sense.

Starcraft II is a bit faster pace than Starcraft I (both of which I will now refer to as SCI or SCII for simplicity)

SCII starts you with 6 builders, compared to the 4 you have in SCI. It is an incredibly large difference in how you manage early game economy. Also, instead of just the zerg, all three races have good early rushing / rush defense strategies. I personally defend early, then attack.
My favorite strategy is economy disruption. There is a new versatile protoss unit called the Void ray, the longer it attacks the more damage it does.
Title: Re: Are you guys Excited about Starcraft II?

Yeah I also noticed that some maps have two vespene gas thing now. Some hardcore SC players will complain that the higher vespene gas earning rate reduces the challenge and that now maps are more like money maps, but I still like it in overall.

I tried the beta and even if I was in single player, not in multiplayer online, I still enjoyed what I saw so far. Game seems fast paced. I was scared it would do like Warcraft III due to the switch to 3D. I got bored of WCIII cuz building and stuff was too slow-paced, and the unit cap was still too low.

Not really on the topic of SCII but a bit on the evolution of SC over the years. Did you know that in its early development, Starcraft had an interface/HUD similar to Warcraft 2?

That site got more images, including from later betas

Btw I just played a SC2 game with Cooliojazz. It was hard to start at first because his computer is old. COnnection would timeout on game start as loading halted in the middle. However he got it fixed afterward and we played a game. I wasn't too great because I only played like 4 games against real human opponents, altough I kinda wish I realised much earlier in the game about how powerful over 250 zerglings with maxed out upgrades can be :P

True altough when you sent those carriers on me, if I did not have those zerglings it was over for me, because I only had one base left with minerals so I would not have got time to build units

And yeah it's an epic game
