My absolute favourite is assassins creed II because it had an awesome story and the pacing was perfect
i found 1 to be too monotonous
brotherhood was just ac2 with a weaker story, but i liked that you could send your assassins to assassinate people if you were lazy
revelations wasn't really interesting for me but the combat system was perfect in that game
i haven't played 3 or 4 yet
what do you guys think?
EDIT: the handheld games don't count

I only played the last three of the series, and the one I prefered among those was Revelations. The city was perfect for Ezio to jump everywhere, and you had really useful weapons like bombs or Axes that you could throw (plus the fact you were able to kill passants :P).
III had a really good story and a really long life, but that was all, the city had too large street to enjoy jumping on buildings.
IV is a really good game... for a Pirates of Caribbean game. It has interesting cities but you spend 70% of your time on your ship. And it has a very short life.

I can't tell which one is the best, because in 5-10 years there will be 20 Assassins Creed games.
I didn't have time to play through the three that I got for cheap a while ago since I got so many games and got back into calc stuff more.
