Some amazing games that weren't on the list.

Terranigma. It is easily one of my all time favorite RPGs, with an awesome story, great gameplay, and huge amounts of depth. I believe it only came out in Europe and Japan, and not the US, and so it's often missed out in topics like these.

Also Super Metroid, which is simply awesome. It is not just one of the best SNES games, but one of the best games, ever. It helped to define the Metroidvania genre.

Super Mario RPG: legend of the seven stars...
It's the first REAL mario RPG, it got overlooked quite a bit 'cause it came out only a bit before the 64 :P
the only Mario game(ever?) where mario can punch stuff ;)

EDIT: Chrono Tiger? methinks it's Trigger

Final Fantasy IV through IV (FFII-III in USA). The Castlevania games are awesome and of course SMW. I loved Super Metroid, although it was a bit too easy, and the Megaman games.

One of my favorite SNES game of all time after FFIV, however, is Secret of Mana, then Demon Crest.

And of course Zelda ALTTP. I have it in French and surpringsly the translation is pretty good.

I disagree... it's a 3d platformer with some RPG elements, but mainly platform...
and zelda: LTTP is good too ;)

I always liked Secret of Evermore a lot. Secret of Mana and TinTin were also great fun. And of course all the mario games. I really should play on my SNES again sometimes :D

Don't forget Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. (New horizons is a sequel, but it's better and the storyline isn't connected) It's a seafaring game.

The Soul Blazer trilogy on the SNES is quite good as well. I never tried the first game, but the 2nd game Illusion of Gaia and the 3rd one Terranigma (which came out in Europe and Japan but not North America) are really great classics. Terranigma is very hard, though, because you get stuck all the time and puzzles can be hard to solve.

Brain Lord doesn't seem too bad either (it's in the same style).

Also one game I liked to play a lot is Metal Warrior. It's some sort of robot platformer, but the multiplayer deathmatch style was really enjoyable as well :)

And of course Lufia I and II. If you play it, though, play the 2nd one first, because it's actually a prequel to the first, despite coming out 3 years later. Also you might find the battle system of the first a bit annoying, because if the entire party selects 1 enemy and he dies halfway through, the remaining characters will still try to attack his spot even if the enemy is gone, rather than automatically selecting another monster, a problem also seen in Final Fantasy I and II for the NES.

Star Ocean as well.

One game that seems more interesting for its sound quality than the game itself is Super Adventure Island. I never really tried the game itself, although it seems quite good, but despite dating back in Early 1992, the music sound quality is on-par with the Nintendo 64, Playstation 1 and maybe even better than some PS2/Gamecube games with similar music. I'm not a big fan of the funk style music, though. It's just that the quality makes it sound like it's real music rather than an old console.
And of course all the mario games.
Except Mario is Missing and the 3 Mario Early Years games, I assume? :P

The best one I own: Super metroid. I really enjoy playing it. I keep finding new secrets/tricks to beat it faster. I also liked castlevania 4, but I think the whip is a bit overpowered. You just don't give a crap about the items anymore.

@DJ I totally agree. I actually loved all three of the soulblazer series separately, before I even realized they were a trilogy. BTW the first one is good too.

Does the Super Gameboy count? If not, then my personal favorite would be Mega Man X. Fond memories with that game. :)

A review complained about the graphics in the first one, but personally I didn't see much difference. They were quite similar to Illusion of Gaia/Time. However what I hate with the 2nd and 3rd game (Terranigma) of the series is that we always get stuck not knowing what to do next in the storyline and it really gets annoying (although not as brutal as Lunar on the Sega Saturn).

And nope the Super Gameboy doesn't count. We would need to start a GB thread for that. :P

I really like the weapon leveling system they put in the third one, and one thing you definitely can't complain about is the changes made from game to game. Each game added vast improvements to the last.

My favorite part of SoulBlazer 1 was the way you could cast magic at enemies at an off-angle using the spinny orb thing. It was annoying how magic cost money, though, and that monsters didn't regenerate.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 06, 2013, 11:57:00 pm
Oh wow, that must be annoying indeed, especially considering how everything is expensive early in RPGs. X.x

For some reasons the 2nd game seems to be closer to Zelda style than the others too, with the heart pieces or something.
Title: Re: best snes games
Post by: willrandship on January 07, 2013, 12:04:13 am
Well, it wasn't really an issue there since it was the only thing you used it for, but since most enemies don't regenerate, it meant you have a limited amount of magic to use.
Title: Re: best snes games
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 07, 2013, 02:17:28 am
Oh ok I thought you could buy items and stuff with it. As for not regenerating do you mean you have to re-enter dungeons or reload save files in order for enemies to reappear or do you mean once they're gone, they're gone forever? The latter would be bad O.O (I had this problem in Hybrid Heaven on the Nintendo 64 which made grinding very hard)

I think this poll is pretty pointless considering how many SNES games there are. It might as well be removed lol. :P

As for Bomberman personally I am not a big fan of the early games, though. I prefer Bomberman 64 (1997) and to a lesser extent Bomberman Hero where you can actually explore big stages like in Mario series rather than being stuck in small arena-type stages.

bomberman sucked for single player campaigns (well, it wasn't bad, but that wasn't a big draw). however, the super bomberman series is arguably the best multiplayer arcade game ever made. it integrates 4 players wonderfully on a single screen (the only other game that comes to mind that manages that is super smash bros); it's simple enough for anyone to pick up, but at the same time has enough variation between levels and powerups to have plenty of room for skill and strategy development; and it just looks and feels fantastic (the cartoony characters, explosions, snappy controls, and upbeat music fit together beautifully). my brothers and other friends used to hold tournaments and play for hours on end, and i still never get bored of it.

Yeah the multiplayer was kinda nice. In single player though I definitively prefered games like Super Mario 64 with larger levels.

That reminds me, I wonder if there are any other Bomberman games that features platform levels like Bomberman 64 and Hero? That would kinda be off-topic, though lol.

DJ_O, most of the enemies never regenerated at all, since they were tied to unlockable gate-thingies. There were a few that regenerated, but that was maybe 2 out of 100 in a dungeon.

Actraiser 1 and 2 are kinda nice games as well, by the way. Of course there are heavy references to religion in the game and parts of it were censored in North America due to Nintendo's content policies and possible controversies, but the games by themselves are fun to play and that's what matters the most. The sequel removes the town building part seen in ActRaiser 1, but some people might like it better if they found the first too confusing or complicated to play.

Soul Blazer is nice as well. It's part of the Soul Blazer trilogy, which includes Illusion of Gaia/Time and Terranigma. Since all those games were made by Quintet the Soul Blazer game has some elements from ActRaiser like building towns.

I always felt that the SNES had the 2nd best game selection behind the Playstation 1. Of course newer consoles are awesome as well, but the SNES had so many kind of games and a wide variety of titles available per genre, same for PS1. Granted, SNES games were shorter in general, but they seemed to have some kind of charm, especially RPGs. Sega Genesis wasn't too far behind, but there were fewer platformers and RPGs in general, so the variety was smaller. Xbox 360 has a wide variety of genres as well, even more than the SNES, but several games are low quality focusing only on graphics and in many cases the characters in games like RPGs seems less emotional and the overall feeling is always dark, while on older consoles there was sometimes humor. The PS2 has a wide variety of games as well, but the library seemed smaller in general than the PS1. NES had many games of all genres, but a lot of them were obscure crappy games, so you had to be careful when buying games (you couldn't be wrong with Mario, of course :P).

I also dislike how a lot of games like RPGs abuse opera and orchestral movie music for boss battles and danger scenes. At least in old games you had boss music like this more often:

Secret of Mana, hands down. If you haven't played it, go play it now. I didn't know while I was playing it, but the girl can be controlled by another player so you have a multiplayer RPG on the SNES!
Title: Re: best snes games

Yeah my bro has it since 2001 (although i played it in 1995 for the first time) and I always kept telling him to never sell it at Microplay/EBGames/etc lol, but now he knows how hard to find and expensive that stuff is so he is keeping it lol.

Also fun fact: It's one of the few SNES games to support more than two players (assuming you buy the adapter).

Another nice game is Cybernator and Metal Warriors is awesome as well, but the latter is like $200+ on Ebay O.O (which is quite shocking considering I got Cybernator for $7). Late SNES games tends to be expensive because they were produced in smaller quantities (since the SNES EOL was near).

Also the Turrican series, although for some reasons the music in the 1st Super Turrican game seemed WAY better than in the other two.

I haven't played many SNES games yet, but I would have to say my favorite is F-Zero. It's challenging, fast-pased, has good music, and doesn't have tons of extra powerups. It's simple and fun.
