What do you guys think is the best sonic the hedgehog game?
i personally think sonic adventure 2 (the remake for the GCN, i never played the original dreamcast version) is the best, but sonic generations (PS3) is coming close.

I sadly didn't get as much into Sonic as I got into Mario, but I know that among the ones I tried, my favorites are the original ones. I will not vote just for one classic, since I liked them all for the time I played them, but I'll say that I only liked Sonic 3D blast slightly less due to controls (maybe it's my gamepad wearing out, because I had troubles running diagonally in Landstalker too). I also liked Sonic Adventure series quite a lot, but I didn't like Sonic Hedgehog 360 nor the GBA port of Sonic 1 Genesis because they were glitchy as hell, and one of the Wii Sonic game (I think the Secret Rings) difficulty was so batshit insane that neither me nor my bro could ever last more than 30 seconds in the first stage due to constantly falling off the track.
Btw in your survey you forgot to include Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Riders and Sonic Secret Rings.

I didn't played all of them, but I agree the original ones on the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive were the best. Sonic 3D Blast was also good, but the controls were weird. (Yeah, it's not just you, DJ.) Sonic CD is nearly perfection, but the Past/Future gameplay element kinda confused me, so I went without and got a bad ending (it's one of the rare games I got an ending at all). And it's with the Dreamcast where everything went downhill. Sonic Adventure DX (the Xbox Live version) is not exactly the best 3D open world game I've ever played, but at least they tried. Sonic Riders can get pretty entertaining if you like racing and/or skateboard games. As of Sonic Generations, I think it's one of the best games the Sonic Team made in their recentish, 3D history as they came up with a pretty original concept (two Sonics, the newer one and the original one with the ability to switch between both of them and revisit the levels from the older games). And I didn't really tried the others much, but Sonic Colors was kinda meh.
So yeah this is a short review of all the Sonic games I own, loaned and/or emulated.

I think I'd pretty much have to agree with DJ. I like and have only really played the old (Genesis) titles. The Game gear/ Master Sytem titles (at least the first two) were quite good as well. :) From what I've heard, general consensus among fans is that most of the 3d ones aren't that good unfortunately. :/ I did play an rpg on the DS that seemed pretty neat though. There was also a 3ds title I bought, but it was pretty disappointing. I haven't even finished it. :/

I've spent so much time on Sonic DX and Shadow the Hedgehog... such good games (especially compared to secret rings/black knight).

I only played the first two games on the Megadrive. I really like the fast paced levels, but the casino and stuff are a bit meh and confusing.

@Juju do you use the 6 button gamepad btw? I have a 3 button one somewhere that is the original so I plan to try it first before doing any judgement, but in my case, when I play Landstalker and Sonic 3D Blast, I often go in the wrong direction when pressing arrows. >.<
Btw was Sonic Black Knight an RPG?

i've included just the main sonic games (and 3d blast).
SatSR and SatBK are spin off games (altough generations considers them canon...)
so they're not included.
but yeah sonic 3d blast had pretty wonky platforming...

Anyways, the only Sonic games I've played were the GBA and DS ones. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is not one of my favorites. I'd say stay away from it and look for a "normal" sonic game, unless it looks really nice to you.

Do you mean the GBA port of Sonic 1? That was probably worse than Sanic Hegehog in the Youtube link above. I don't know what happened to that port, but everything is broken, from random lag (even with no extra sprites on the screen) to over 9000 glitches causing you to die in some unlikely ways, along with Sonic being slow-ish. That shit was just broken and made Sonic 2006 look bug-free.

Shadow is the best sonic, IMO. It has a much better storyline, and lots of gameplay that isn't all just running to the exit. Similar for Heroes, minus the good story.

well, i thought the story in shadow was shit (really, shadow android???) the gameplay was too slippery and the level environments were too bleak and uninteresting.

Did you even do the awesome paths? Shadow android was the stupid ending.
Also, this is compared to the Sonic storylines (tails gets chaos emerald with infinite power, keeps for himself for a plane. Nice guy there)

ugh sonic 06 is an unplayable mess, and silver is the most annoying sonic character (even more annoying than charmy bee)

Yeah, I remember seeing a Silver game for the gamecube. Maybe it was just concept art but I'm pretty sure it was real. And what do mean by annoying? He wasn't bad from what I remember.

Silver needs stuff to throw at enemies. He doesn't really have an attack other than that. It's annoying if you miss and have to go back to pick up more stuff to throw.

in my case I was born with Mario and eventually moved on to RPGs for a while, so as a result, I never beat a Sonic game at all. I did play them quite a few times, though.

The only Sonic game I've beaten so far is Sonic CD on Xbox 360. I wasn't far from beating Sonic 2 either (but with heavy use of emulator savestates).
