Title: ExtraLives.org Sonic Marathon for Charity
Post by: eriktheorange on August 20, 2010, 12:37:38 pm
Sorry if this seems a bit spammy, but I think it deserves some more attention.

The folks over at ExtraLives.org (http://extralives.org/) are starting a Sonic the Hedgehog marathon for Charity:Water (http://www.charitywater.org/), which provides access to clean water for villages in developing nations. According to the charity, $20 can provide a person with clean water for 20 years, and $5000 can build a well.
These are the same guys that did that Zelda New Year's marathon ($12,000 raised) and the recent N64 and Pokemon marathons ($10,000 raised each).

The marathon is on http://www.extralives.org/ or on their Ustream page at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/extralives-marathons.

Are there any proof that the money for the Zelda New Year's marathon as well as the N64 and Pokémon ones actually reached the people who need it (and not the governments, since they might keep it)? I tend to not trust that stuff much, after what happened to Moisson Lévis (the city where I live version of Moisson Quebec, a group that raise money and food for poor people who need money to eat) and a few others around here. (They just pretended to be a group that raised money for poor people but in fact kept it all for themselves).

Yes, the founder of the charity sent them a video of the site where they were building one of the schools.
It was on the main page, but they've taken down the news bit for the video stream. Trust me, they are 100% honest. All the donations go directly to the charity.

Ah ok. Well, yeah, it's also good if it goes directly to charity. I remember when they helped Haiti they didn't want to send the money to government because they were scared he may run away with all of it because governments at those places tend to be like that.

Unfortunately, they're having a lot of technical issue right now. The marathon might be postponed until tomorrow.

Edit: Good news, everyone! Everything's fixed, they're starting for real right now!
