Title: For those planning to get an Xbox 360 Elite
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 16, 2007, 05:16:00 pm
Ok I wonder if anyone was planning to buy themselves a Xbox 360 Elite (the black one)? If you plan so, don't! Get the normal Xbox 360 instead. You'll save yourself problems and money.

Here's why I am saying so: Since I got this console I got nothing but problems. The first three weeks I got it it would take 5 or 6 minutes for the wireless controllers to get recognised. Sometimes the 360 elite wouldn't even recognize any of them so I couldn't even play. That was even if I had fresh new batteries. I tried with 3 controllers and same result with all of them. Now I don't get this problem as much as I used to, it usually take between 3 and 10 seconds for them to be recognised. However, the microphone that came with my elite stopped working the first day I used it. Now I got a new mic, and 3 hours later it would stop working at all. Like if it wasnt even connected. So I thought it was the mic that had a problem, so i got it replaced, however the other one was not working either! So I tried with all my 3 controllers in case it would be the controller, and still no luck. I have everything set correctly as well in my settings. Now I know it is the console, because one of my friend said he knew lot of people who had the elite and got nothing but trouble like this with it as well. Everyone he know who have the normal 360 (the white one) didn't got any of those problems at all.

I guess MS staff built those new consoles very quickly and reduced production costs, explaining why the new xbox 360 is so unreliable.

Not using mic doesn't stop me from playing games but try playing Halo 3 missions with a group of friends with no mic. This is not to mention that I can't connect to their games at all sometimes.

So if you want a 360, get the white one, not the black one.

Thursday if I find my xbox 360 elite receipt back (I think I lost it) I will get it back from where it came (wal-mart) and get a 360 normal edition in exchange). If I lost the receipt I'll just go at EBGames and get a 360 in exhcange of the 360 Elite even if I have to pay some money for the exchange.

hmm, I would never get an elite but for a different reason. The only advantage it seems to have is the larger hard drive... and a 120GB drive is not worth $100 extra. :Ptongue.gif Anyways, all 360's are known to have hardware trouble--watch out for the red ring of doom! I think it's 1/3 360's end up going back to MS for replacement or some ridiculous number like that. Looks like elites especially, hehe.

yeah it has bigger harddrive. And yeah I know all 360 have overheating issues, you must put them in a place where the console can "breath" else you get that Red ring of death. My friend found a way to fix it though but i don't remember how I should ask him again and note it.

Seems like PS3 have overheating issues too tho, one even fried once.

Ha Wii FTW. I knew there was  reason I wanted a Wii instead of an xBox.  BUt I'll keep this in mind when I do get one.

Yeah wii isn't supposed to do this. Prbly because the console is much less powerful though (altough it have wicked good games too). I never heard report of overheating Wiis/gamecube like with the Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 so far. The console seems pretty fragile though so you need to handle with care :-P

Maybe they are trying to fit too much power into a pizza box case. They could have used laptop-ish parts in the 360 and ps3, but then it would cost a hell of a lot more. If I did buy a console though, I must say the 360 is looking surprisingly good despite it's hardware troubles. It has a fairly large selection of good games I would want to play, when compared to the wii which has zelda, smash bros, and... well the new mario game looks kind of fun I guess but that's it really. :/confused.gif They still haven't made any awesome light gun or sword fighting games. PS3 has... what does the PS3 have? o.oblink.gif Maybe in a year the PS3 will be better once there are more games for it.

Yes PS3 does have overheating problems which really should be expected when running 9 CPUs on 1 chip. Has anyone seen the PS3 grill on Youtube? :Ptongue.gif Also some games you might want to check out for the PS3:

Heavenly Sword
Haze
Unreal Tournament 3
Killzone 1 and 2
Resistance: FOM and Resistance: ROM(soon to come)
Ratchet and Clank

among others.

8 Reasons not the get the Xbox 360 Elite

Also right now I would also just go with the regular 360 also. Even though it is known to have problems too.

they need to put colders (literally) in their console lol

what will it be when the xbox 666 and the PS4 is released? People in Texas, Arizona and Italy will no longer be able to play during summers due to excessive heat? I dont talk about nintendo because they usually aim for gamewplay more than power now so overheating may not be a big pb for them in the near future

stick it in a freezer lol, I know someone who did that and it actually worked.

I just want to play H3 and beat on legendary.  That's about it for Xbox 360.  I really just want a DS.

I wantt Final Fantasy III NES (original, not DS remake) ported on a console, not a s***ty ROM translation where text screws up at 1/4 of the game progress

but the new zelda just came out! :Dbiggrin.gif Yay for DS. I use it as an mp3 player more than a handheld console these days though, hehe.

As for the PS3 games you listed there, Haze and UT3 I will definitely get the PC release over the PS3 release. I don't give a rats a** about resistance fall of man either. The only ones on there that look interesting would be heavenly sword and ratchet and clank.

Haze isn't coming out for the PS3. It has been announced as a PS3 exclusive.

And also I am sorry to say. I don't think there will be a Halo 4 DJ_Omnimaga. Microsoft has released Bungie from under their management.  :w00t:woot.gif

Spengo: Alright, if you feel that strongly.

Either way I am looking forward to Juiced 2, Dark Sector, UT3, and Haze.

There is slight changes that there will be a Halo 4. When Halo 3 ends, if u play in normal mode the end implies master chief dies, but if u finish in hard mode the end is extended and he is still alive in the ship getting lost in the space and tell the girl to wake him up when she needs to, implying there may be a sequel. That said, maybe bungie will still continue the Halo series even if microsoft released bungie, since it's bungie who developped Halo? And maybe this is a good thing because they could consider porting Halo to other consoles like the playstation 3 since it will no longer be affiliated with MS, thus, not forced anymore to stay on MS consoles/OSes?

Oh is Haze being a PS3 exclusive now? I thought it was going to be PS3, 360, and PC. Well, that makes another interesting one for the PS3 at any rate. But again, like I said it will be another year or so before the PS3 actually has all these titles.

@DJ, You know... although Bungie may be able to make pretty cool games on one platform, I'm not really confident in their porting abilities, hehe. Especially looking at the disaster that is the PC version of Halo 2. Maybe since they are non-MS now that will make a difference, I dunno.

I don,t play halo PC much. Halo 1 PC wasnt too bad it had good graphic/performance ratio but halo 2 port was bs apparently. Halo 1 isnt very great though except in multiplayer mode if u can avoid people idle

I gots the red ring :'( although i have to say, up to this point, i've had no problems with my white xbox 360. and really the only content that has any significant space demand is movies, and those lose their rights anyways and i delete them, so 20GB suffices just fine for my purposes.  I'd rather pack my laptop's HD with movies :Dbiggrin.gif

the best way to avoid this is to not put the console on a carpet for example or stuff like this. At a local game store there was a game demo to try and the poor xbox 360 was inside a plastic case x.x, not surprising that while playing halo 2 here because of the tournament it got a RROD

Yes Haze is PS3 exclusive now, and I don't blame them.

Quite frankly porting is a bi*** now more than it ever has been. To push to most out of your games you need to get platform specific. Even going down into the CAssembly field.

This is one reason why Insomniac Games sticks to PS3 because it helps you focus on making the games better.

Games that are available for PC and Console platforms generally are much crappier than games made specifically for PC. Crysis proves this point by far.

@spengo: Yes, but really how many more games does 360 have that PS3 doesn't aside from Gears of War, and Halo 3? Really if you are looking for sports games, and RPGs then PS3 is for you. Square Enix has about 8 RPGs lined up for the PS3(no lie).

I can say for certain that UT3 will be fairly similar to GoW save that cover system.

Hmm, I played the UT3 beta and I don't think it's much like gears of war except that the suits the guys wear are kind of similar, hehe. Also, I still say definitely get the PC version over the PS3 one, provided you have a good PC. In general, PC releases are much better than the console releases even if you have to wait 3 months extra like for some games. Halo is an exception because the PC versions always suck balls of that game. :Ptongue.gif Even so, UT3 doesn't really seem all that great to me from what I've played. I have the gfx set to max of course and they run smoothly, but they don't really look all that impressive. I noticed some pretty low-res textures in places too and that bugged me. The main menu in UT3 is horrible, takes like 10 screens just to get to keyboard config and you end up pressing quit about 5 times to get the game to exit in the middle of a game. I still think UT99 is the best one. :)smile.gif

Also, I don't think games made for PC and console are crappy, GTA proves this if you wanna go that way, hehe. Or Orange Box even is multiplatform, and what about Assassin's Creed? And yeah, I agree that for sports games and RPGs, PS3 will probably have more, unfortunately I'm not a fan of sports games and RPGs I'd rather play on a hand-held console to be honest. Aaaaand the PS3 just costs too damn much. x_x

I have had a ps3 since launch...never had a problem thus far. I also  waited for a wii (which I sold for an extra 100 bucks) I'm not really mad that I sold the wii, Zelda was really all I wanted it for. I my have to pick one up to play a little metroid, and ssb.

As for the 360 the only games I see as being a must play that are exclusive to them is:
-Bioshock
-Halo 3
-Maybe blue dragon
-As of this month Half-Life 2: the orange box
I dont see really anything exclusive during the rest of this year to look forward too.
That isnt to say the 360 doesn't have a good solid lineup of past titles...Dead Rising, Lost Planet (which is now coming to ps3 with all the 360/PC for free added), to name a few.

The ps3 has some great games coming towards the end of this month and into next month.
-Ratchet and Clank (10/30)
-Folklore (if your into those games)
-Uncharted (november something)
-Haze (november something)
-Not too mention some of the PSN games that are really original and
embrace the smaller devs. Everyday shooter ftw!

So the ps3 is FINALLY building up a good library, RFOM was good, warhawk was alright, HS is good, Warhawk is decent, NG is good, but the future really does look bright for the ps3 and I hear a price drop is coming sometime near the holidays. (but come on, the thing plays blu-ray, is at least a 100 bucks cheaper since launch, has a solid lineup coming within the next month, free online!)

For upcoming exclusives:
-MGS4 (going to be freaking sweet)
-Killzone 2
-Final Fantasy (if your into them)
-UT3
-White Knights

But I think we can all agree that no matter what system you got there are gonna be some sweet multi-platform games coming out:
-Rock Band
-Guitar Hero 3
-Kane & Lynch
-Assasin's Creed
-GTA 4
-Timeshift
-Fallout 3

I am going to have a huge whole in my banking account next year and this november.

Why is UT3 an exclusive? It's mainly PC but they are making a PS3 version too, even though they will be slower on the updates there or so they say.

I always found stupid that Final Fantasy I-VI comes for nintendo handled but the rest comes for Playstation only consoles. Since square enix vs nintendo war ended in 2003 (it lasted from 1996 to 2003) why do they still release some FF titles only on the  PS consoles and not the Wii/GC for example and why does the old titles aren't released anymore on ps consoles (even the PSP)?

Could this possibly be the deal that Sony was talking about that would take the place of GTA IV release exclusivity?

Anyways that is exactly why I don't believe in releasing betas. People are always over critical of betas. They don't have time to polish it up, so they throw in a low res texture, and all of a sudden the graphics aren't impressive? Either way I would never judge my like for games off of a beta because it simply isn't anywhere near complete. The Gears of War beta showing wasn't complete either. Marcus looked totally different, some textures on things were low res, the physics system for blood wasn't exactly polished yet, etc.

Either way I think it is safe to say that console games will always be behind PCs in the graphics area. Epic suggests reducing texture sizes by 2X. ;)wink.gif

The good thing about consoles though is there is no need for the portability issues which means you can focus on the game making, and not how many systems it will be able to run on.

Oh yeah and the 60 GB PS3 dropped $125 here.

Also UT3 PS3 will get all the special little nick naks that the PC version has, and a little more. It will feature mods with maps, gameplay, and all things UnrealScript, with SIXAXIS support, and all the other little dressings.

Also to be honest I see no reason why you should be over critical on games just because of graphics. I will tell you for certain that if they wanted UT3 to look like GoW they could. There is nothing special done in GoW that can't be done in any other game with the UE3.

true I don't understand why people judge games by their graphics. It happened with calc games a lot, people judged an old ASCII RPG because of it's graphics, no matter how much features it had and long storyline

GoW and UT3 look kind of the same gfx-wise if you ask me. Neither really have superior gfx to the other from what I've seen and they both have the same sort of style. There are space aliens and they both exhibit ridiculously buff men in oversized armor toting guns that are almost bigger than they are! hehe :lol:bounce2.gif The environments are made of lots of stones and gritty looking castley stuff. They are completely different games though and I'm pretty sure they aren't meant to compete with each other. UT3 is a quake-like multiplayer FPS and GoW is a third person shooter with a big single player campaign. GoW has multiplayer too of course, but it's a totally different style of play. That and they don't even exist on the same platform, heh. Maybe I am judging it too much on gfx though, but I kind of expected more from UE3 I think. The latest version of Source looks a lot better imo and Cryengine2 looks amazingly better.

I'm not just judging it solely on gfx either it just... somehow doesn't quite capture the experience of the original UT. Also, I don't expect beta releases to be perfect, hell the whole point of them is so that users will test the game beyond what official testers thought of and see what glitches or problems they experience. I shall definitely post to them about the broken menu system! :)smile.gif I do believe in beta releases because this is exactly what they are FOR. So the developers can fix the stuff that bug people and the bugs in the game before official release.

If you remember Epic also said that PC will still be the main UT platform and they are cutting out cross-platform multiplayer because they don't want PC users to have to wait for the updates that will take them longer on the PS3. Personally I'd rather just wait the extra couple months for updates because more people playing is always better amirite? But whatever. I do like the idea of making it more easy to develop mods for consoles though. Bigger audience for mods as well as more people to make them (all the PS3 owners have the ability now as well as the PC owners) means more mods and... more is always better! :Dbiggrin.gif

[offtopic]I always thought it was "knick knack" o.oblink.gif [/offtopic]

No UT3 wasn't the big bang that sony was gonna unleash, it is delayed a little, it might come out before 08 but most likely they are sayin early 08.

From what I have heard, in the same one year span during programming for GoW and UT3, UT3 is far better in every aspect. Meaning everything is better than gears is gameplay/graphics wise. This is on the PS3 mind you.
Epic and sony really worked together to get the Unreal Engine really sparkling for the ps3, I have heard nothing but praise from Epic. MS really screwed over the customers when they wouldnt let Epic release extra Gears stuff for free on XBL. Epic got angry about that and MS forcing them to make there future games only for vista. So they went to Sony and we get the UT3 exclusive for a month or two at least.

I love the ability to play the mods, the Xbox wont be able to do that. The only thing is that the mods have to be specific to pc or ps3, due to the way stuff is stored on the ps3. However they shouldn't be too hard to port between the two.

Orly rofl, and we thought Sony was the evil empire. MS is lusers. XDsmiley.gif As for 360 mods... it only has a teeny 20GB drive! haha Personally I prefer the gameplay of UT over GoW, but that's mostly 'cause I'm an FPS nutter I think. ^^; Gfx will be better obviously because PS3 has a significant power advantage over the xbox. I think orange box is probably better on PS3 than 360 as well. I hear they have a lot of trouble with TF2 especially and there are no 3rd party maps which really sucks for Portal. PC ftw still though! :Dbiggrin.gif

That is good. I mean GoW was Epic Games first venture with the UE3, and was basically "practice", so I feel confident that this will be better in every aspect.

That is quite odd because about 1-2 years ago Epic was claiming that the Unreal Engine 3 was optimized more for 360 performance. I am glad they changed this though.

I like this style.

Well I mean you can't expect Epic to change every aspect of the game just because they released GoW. That would probably cause them to bring in new modelers.

As well CryEngine2 should look better. They made it specifically with high-end PCs in mind.

Either way you can't really compare graphics of an engine, only the games that use them. Because really all those engines across the board support all the same features in some form or another, but they may not be used.

Also on another note Crysis 2 looks a little stagnant from all the videos I watch of it. The graphics are amazing, and probably the best out there, but the frame rate is just...weird...

I don't know how to explain it, but when I see the guy shooting in the forest that is filled with all those trees it just seems to slow down enough for you to notice that it isn't running smoothly, and even in the snowy areas.

This is all understandable though, seriously, because the LOD can't work in close corridors like that.

No betas make it so that people get bugged out, and never want to play the game again, and then try to make other people conform to that opinion also.

I have seen it happen numerous times. (I am not saying you are doing that)

It just doesn't seem like the general public understands the meaning of BETA.

Also on a side note I would just like to say it really seems like that "give a year to sony, they will bounce back" is starting to take an effect. Microsoft is proving that they are the monster.

Not just by forcing Epic to not release maps that are free, but for not giving Harmonix the wireless protocol because they are a 3rd party developer. No wireless guitar controllers for the 360 I guess. :(sad.gif

Yeah Playstation 3 is starting to get some good games finally. Like the Wii, it had a pretty small game selection for a while. Hopefully the RPGs will start coming up as well and maybe MTV Music Generator 4 we never know %)rolleyes2.gif

Btw if you plan  to produce music DON'T get MTV MUsic Generator 3. It just sucks, plain and simple, it isn't even a music production software, it only allow you to remix songs featured in MTV awards from 10 artists and make new songs using their styles only. In other words they completly changed the concept of Music Generator, Music 2000/MTV Music Generator and Music 3000/MTV Music Generator 2 and turned it into a MTV music awards advertising

That said I stick with MTV music generator 1 until they release a decent Playstation 2 emu that run it without crashes so I can produce directly on the PC. Sometimes they have copy of MTV Music Generator 2 on Amazon.ca anyway so I may get an hold of it but I don't want to produce on the playstation because it is too hard to send the files to PC afterward (hence why it took so long for Techno Revolution, Techno Strike, Summer Trance, Ultimate end and all those old songs to make it online)

Hehe, I know what you mean by the crysis framerate. Even with 2 8800 Ultras in SLI I hear it doesn't run all that great at high resolutions. Since I really don't feel like installing Vista again I will probably play it in DX9 mode though, and I'm confident me 8800GTS should be able to handle that okay.

Do you know if the PS3 release of Orange Box will support 3rd party maps and more valve maps for tf2 and portal? Sony doesn't seem to have the strange issues MS has about free content.

I heard the new metroid just looks sick, graphics wise it is better than anything seen on the wii. Which is good, because even if it is a souped up gamecube, RE4 looked awesome and proved that games could really look good on a gamecube, you just gotta spend time.

I love how the wii is fairly cheap for a sdk, like 400 bucks I think, maybe even less than that. I would certainly develop for one if I got my rep up in the psp scene, but I wont start to work on those games probably until this summer.

As for the orangebox mods and stuff, I dont see any reason why they shouldn't be for the ps3, I haven't really heard anything about them though. Oh and that sucks that the 360 wont have wireless for Rockband...and most likely GH...but arent they going to package a usb thing that will use it's own wireless stuff on both the ps3 and 360? I know I had seen pictures for it...but really I don't see why the ps3 should have them, the 360 for that matter either...damn MS.

Imho the metroid prime graphics were awesome indeed. I think what may help the speed is the fact lot of rooms are like tubes and are smaller than in some FPS games so rendering details very far may not be necessary.

and the Wii is $329 here. It launched at $279 but its high popularity made the price rise. It's the first time I ever see this happen in my whole life with a new console

From nintendo directly I think. And I thought it was 3K, but maybe it is just 3K for a license to release games commercially.

@spengo: Yeah I wouldn't install Vista unless you are planning to play only DX10 games. Silicon Graphics made benchmarks of programs utilizing DX9 and OpenGL on XP, and Vista. The programs running on Vista were almost always slower no matter what API. They said that this is due mainly to the Aero Window Manager.

It's not just the Aero thing, it's other stuff too. Mostly because Vista is more optimized for dx10 than dx9 I think. But anyways, if I were to install Vista again it would definitely not be overwriting my XP install. I'd just push my linux install over a bit and add another 10GB partition or something for Vista to sit on.
