The title is explanatory.
I saw what a DS can do, and noticed I was able to count the pixels and the polygons, in other words the graphics were awful. However, most games seemed to have an interesting gameplay.
Hence the question : does the 3DS improves the graphical experience without lowering the gameplay experience ?
(note, I don't care about 3D, if I had a 3DS I'd always turn 3D off)
-
If you mean enhancing regular DS games then it wont but the 3DS is a lot better at graphics for its own games.
-
Honnestly, no. Unless you like Pokemon, you won't find many games that worth it.
Wait there is the next Smash Bros on it. :D

Yeah, I meant for its own games.

Well I like Pokemon lol. But my question was more about graphics.

You get a PSP quality more or less. Not much more. Nintendo never shined for their graphic power.

Well it's not that bad already. I asked my parents for a DS when it was out and they said no and bought me a PSP I never wanted instead, so maybe the 3DS will be ok, idk.

Nintendo are not known for epic graphics because they focus more on innovative features (the console being pocket sized, dual screens, touch screen, 3D, etc.) than a rush for performance. And their graphics feel really good with the games that are made for it. ;) Same goes for home consoles.
-
If you like nintendo games:get a 3ds. If you like playstation and android games: get a psVita. If you like xbox games: you're basically fucked.

That's right, until past months. They have paid DLC for NSMB 2 !? Oo" Do you imagine a Mario game with paid content? And that's not even for a 2nd playthrough or a new adventure, it's just a bonus for the rush mode they added...
Plus the innovation goes too far, or not far enough, I don't know, but I don't feel the Nintendo Touch anymore I could feel on a SNES game. I almost had it with NSMB Wii or NSMB2 buuut the latter had the same musics/plot advancement than the former, I think I just played a recycled NSMB+NSMBWii with a Tanooki Mario... I'm clearly disappointed by the new philosophy of Nintendo, but I'm still hoping for a good turn for the next games/generations.
Anyway, some games you should have is Mario KArt, Zelda3D, Star Fox (hint : set your console in English to hear the memetic "Do a barrel roll", they translated it), Petit Computer and, why not, a Mario Game.

Personally, I prefer GBC graphics :P

Yay! Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons FTW.
-
Yup GBC Zeldas are the best graphics ever
-
Yeah, and to quit the offtopic, they rereleased them on the Virtual Console section for the 3DS. YOu should totally get them.

I like Android games (I mean Nova 3, not Angry Birds) but I have a Note 3 for that :P

Lol :P
Also I have a PC.

Lol, so you finally got a decent Android device./me runs

Pokemon X and Y are supposedly really good! Mario kart is also cool!
-
IMO Yes it is worth it, there are some sweet games on the platform!
-
I've been quite enjoying mine. To give you an idea of graphics, they Re-released "The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time" on the 3DS. The graphics look smoother and better than the original that was on the Nintendo 64. I've also quite been enjoying Pokemon X. Pokemon Black and White were 3D, and pushed the original DS hardware. These new games are leaps and bounds better though. I also just got the new Legend of Zelda title. I haven't put much time into it yet, but it seems quite nice so far. I definitely recommend it. :)
-
Good to hear then since I wanted one too. Now is the XL really worth the major price bump ?
-
Ah not elsewhere than America, AC/DC supplier isn't supplied with the XL...
-
Good question actually. When I got my Zelda game, I upgraded to the XL. It isn't really necessary, but;
1.)The design of the original leaves minor imprints on the screen when closing it. This is caused by the raised plastic around the lower screen touching the upper screen. I'm unsure if Nintendo ever addressed this.
2.)The screen size difference really is huge. The XL also might not fit as well into pockets...
3.)There is a 3DS XL Bundle on sale now that is $219 with the new Zelda game (which sells for $40 alone as a digital download).
*Edit*@Eiyeron: They don't include an AC/DC charger worldwide? That's really strange... Just FYI, the original 3DS charger (or a DSI charger) works with the 3DS XL. At least for the US versions of the product.
-

All my calcs fit in my pockets so it's no issue for me. :P

Ok, thanks everyone for the opinions :)
(also lol, that price (http://jeux-video.fnac.com/mp17037666/Zelda-no-Densetsu-Toki-no-Ocarina-3D-IMPORT-JAPONAIS?ectrans=1&mckv=lgm6EyfW_dc&oref=82e5f7c6-2590-ea5a-7ec7-aa0bcd2b5771&Origin=CMP_GOOGLE_MP_LOGJV&pcrid=23954015423))

LOL. This is pretty crazy too : http://www.ebay.fr/itm/NINTENDO-3DS-CONSOLE-ZELDA-25TH-ANNIVERSARY-LIMITED-EDITION-NEW-SEALED-/370947603422?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameConsoles_VideoGameConsoles&hash=item565e333bde

I like the 3DS personally. Lots of the Mario games are worth it, as well as the RPGs. I'm not fond of 3D, though, so I wish that they made a 2DS earlier (one that you can fold, though).

Yeah, same, I don't want to pay for a feature I'll always disable but I'd like to fit the device in my pockets lol.

Ok, thanks for your opinion too :)
Now to decide among several choices:
- Get one myself without telling my parents (like, I'm 19, I don't care anyway)
- Get one myself and tell my parents afterwards so they pay back :P
- Ask my parents to get me one (most honest choice, but the one most subject to fail)
And
- XL (with the advantages AoC said)
- Not XL (can be bought second hand for a bit cheaper than a new 3DS, and a lot cheaper than a new XL)
-
Note : The XL doesnt have a better screen, the pixels are just bigger. And that makes the result quite ugly...

Well, it doesn't have a better resolution, but still, I am used to 5.7'' and 5.8'' screens. So ok, the XL will shock me with its big pixels, but the non XL will shock me too for the same reason (because the 5.7'' is Full HD) plus with its little 3.53'' size.
Also, there is not only the size of the screen, there is the comfort of using something bigger (I have long fingers) and the imprints problem AoC mentionned on the non XL.

The 2DS has a feature everyone seems to be forgetting: The controls are in a good place. On all of the DS line, they're based in the center of the lower part of the handheld, which means it's off-balance. With the 2DS, it's still in the center, but it's also in the center of balance, and therefore easier to hold.

Fair enough. I don't have any problems with that on the DS Lite nor my GBA SP though. But now I play DS games on my phone with DraStic so I don't care. :P
-
Bump.
I just wanted to share my opinion now that I have been playing with a 3DS for some months.
It is indeed great!
After seeing ridiculous DS games (seriously, Pokemon on DS were flat sprites in battle and in Transformers, you have like 20 polygons on the screen and that's all), I was afraid that the 3DS would also have cheap graphics, but it absolutely doesn't. Of course, it's not the same as playing on 1080p on my computer, but that's what my computer is for, while the 3DS is for playing outside or for playing games with interesting gameplay (and not with a keyboard and a mouse all day long), like Ocarina of Time 3D in which you use the gyroscope to aim.
Games that I got and my opinions on it:
- Pokemon X. Well, Pokemon :P .
- Super Mario 3D Land: I got it for free with my 3DS and Pokemon X, but I never played it.
- Kirby Triple Deluxe: I already played previous iterations of Kirby and I was afraid that this one would just be "yet another one", even with better graphics. But no, Nintendo seems to know how to innovate and you now have passages where you have to move Kirby around with the buttons while moving a cube with the gyroscope at the same time for example O.O so it's really interesting. There's also that "Kirby fighters" part (or whatever it's called in English) that I find interesting (because I like Super Smash Bros :P). And of course, all of that with better graphics than in previous iterations.
- Ocarina of Time 3D: People told me that if I never played OoT, I had to be ashamed :P . I said that I never had any console and they said "you have a PC that can run Wii games and you use that as an excuse ?" so I tried OoT on a n64 emu (just tried, not played so ok it's illegal but I now bought it on 3DS and no longer play on emu) and I found it awful. Mainly because of the graphics. Triangles with dull colors everywhere (you even see triangles on the ground). People then told me "OoT is not about the graphics, it's awesome because of it's story, etc". I know that it was 10 years ago but I couldn't play that. So I bought the remake on my 3DS. And... wow. Graphics are still not PC worth, they don't stun you in awesomeness but they don't stun you in awfulness either as the n64 version did, they are more than good enough. So I could enjoy the game without being annoyed now and I have to agree, it's awesome :D .
- Lego City Undercover: Don't ask me why I bought that :P. This one is the only bad game I have for now on my 3DS. Graphics are great, but the story is too short (and predictable but it's a Lego video game) and the loading times are too long.
So yeah, I posted that in case someone was wondering what happened to the person who asked for opinions about the 3DS, well that person now has a 3DS and a very good opinion of it :D.
-
I might buy a 3DS one time.
-
Nice. I am considering one too.
The DS was a joke in front of the PSP, but the PSP sucked in it's way too.
-
I think it's definitively worth the purchase. The DS had some games too but most notable ones were Mario Kart, the Zelda games, Nintendo 64 ports or SNES ports and not all of them were particularly impressive. Other than that, the DS focused heavily on educational games for a while and the Pokémon games were not technically impressive. The 3DS library seems to be more diverse in terms of actual games, except maybe hardcore FPSes, and it pushes graphics further. The PSVita is not so expensive either but it seems mostly aimed towards JRPG fans nowadays because that's pretty much all that comes out for it, while the 3DS has both JRPGs and many other classic franchises.
I would recommend the 3DS for sure.
As for the PSP it was fun for a short while, because it had plenty of great RPG remakes (Star Ocean series, Ys series, Final Fantasy series) and some other interesting games, but the problem is the UMD proprietary format which isn't compatible with anything else and when the PSP came out it was like $400-500 compared to the $250 PSVita, not to mention all the technical issues the PSP had. After most PSP games came out on PSN, available for play on the Vita, as well as Steam, this pretty much rendered most PSP consoles useless and mine hasn't been used for over a year.
-
Well, there were many more SNES remakes on the GBA than on the DS. :P
-
True, but what I mean is that for the DS, they didn't seem to do that much effort for graphics when porting games. Rather than porting Nintendo 64 games like they did with Super Mario 64, they just ported older games. It's like if they decided to re-release Final Fantasy VII for the PS Vita but with zero graphical updates and just an extra bonus dungeon.
-
You do get the original experience that way, though, which is cool if you don't have the original hardware.
-
It's totally worth it for Super Smash Bros 3DS, in my opinion.
I got one for Christmas two years ago (anticipating Pokemon X and Y) and I never dreamed of a portable SSB game, but now it's here!
-
Bleh, SSB4 is gonna be better on the WiiU. :P
-
I agree with the fact SSB4 is going to be better on the Wii U. But I don't have a TV, Wii U+TV is a lot more expensive than just 3DS, a 3DS can be bought without your parents knowing, you can play the 3DS in a train and as I said, for HD games I have my PC. So I'd say that indeed, as 123outerme said, SSB on 3DS is going to be worth it (except if they make it Brawl-like and not Melee like).
-
There will be a GC pad adapter for the U. So the home version is definitely gonna rock ass. :D
-

This doesn't defeat the "I have my PC for that" argument.
And who says there will be no adapter for the 3DS ? :P
-
Lol GC pad on the 3ds. :P
Also, on the PC you only have Melee, Brawl and PM.
-
Yeah, I don't really believe on GC pads on 3DS, but that would be awesome :P
Maybe they could do something like the Circle Pad but with all the GC buttons ?
And yeah, on PC, I have those 3, but PM is still developped, will always be developped and has all the features everybody wants such as wavedashing which is impossible in Brawl and will probably be unavailable in future iterations too so I "only" have the best ones ;)
-
Butbutbut SSB4 WiiU has better gfx. :(
-
If it was about graphics, I would have bought a Vita instead of a 3DS and would have stopped playing Melee.
-
Also, on the PC you only have Melee, Brawl and PM.
You forgot the original.
-

Plus, those who only get a console because of graphics seems to not realize that way back then, people had plenty of fun with graphics like this:

Well it's not all about graphics but this one is a bit too ugly for my tastes, like the original OoT :P
Plus, I couldn't find it in the retro gaming shop where I found Brawl and Melee -.-

Why "way back then" ? We still have fun with this kind of games on calc :D
-
Oh I meant people who only play console games in general. I even saw people complain that Watchdogs graphics are bad O.O
Also calc games in general have much better graphics than that Atari game :P
-

Looks like you didn't try it in 1400*1050 with 16x MSAA and 16x anisotropic filter + community retexture v6.
-
The problem is not the resolution, nor is it the anti-aliasing, nor does it come from textures. It's the low number of polygons in models. A cube in 1920x1080 is still a cube.
-
Bleh polygons. :P Also OoT runs at 20 fps for the NTSC version, and slower with 17 fps for PAL. But bleh.
-
To be honest I always found chars in OoT to be ugly and lacking polygons, even by N64 standards. They looked worse than some PS1 characters. Map and object graphics, as well as enemies were nice, though.
-
Well, the n64 was limited and OoT is pretty graphically intensive for it.
-
Yeah I just mean how for example in Super Mario 64, Mario looked more round than Link in OoT.
-
Criticising a system because of its graphics .... on a calculator forum!?!
:D.
-
Lol tr1p. :P
Also MK64 looks like it uses 2D sprites for characters and karts like SMK.
-
Yeah most 64 games used scaled sprites for various objects like trees and sometimes even chars. This is why I think on the HP Prime, using the Triangle command to generate basic terrains or walls you wouldn't really need that much 3D rendering for the rest, although detecting if a sprite is in front of or behind a wall might be trickier.
-
There are probably also space constraints on the N64 because in OoT the maps are huge and the ROM is only like 64MB (or even 32 I don't remember)
-

Well, even the (normal) DS does this, and many older games on both computers and consoles also do this. This is mainly used for objects far away or in other cases where it isn't that visible though, but they do use it. Mario kart n64 and other games of that era just did this to a much higher extend than now though, since currently it's pretty much only used to render particle effects.
