Title: Magic: The Gathering
Post by: SirCmpwn on May 25, 2011, 07:10:18 pm
Hello,
So who out there plays MTG?  I play it almost obsessively, and have recently started getting more competitive.  I'm actually putting together a fairly competitive and cheap Green/Blue infect deck that can win on turn 2.
Spoiler For How to win on turn 2:
God hand: Two forests, one Glistener Elf, two Giant Growth, two Mutagenic Growth
Turn one: Drop a forest, Glistener Elf
Turn two: Drop 2nd forest, declare Glistener Elf as attacking.  If they don't choose to block (they probably won't), tap both forests and lose 4 life to play the instants and deal 10 infect damage
My other decks include:
As well as various decks that float in and out of being used.  I typically don't keep a deck in its assembled state for very long, and disassemble them quite often.

I DO! I have a few decks actually. Unfortunetly, I do happen to like yugioh much more, so my MTG skills/collection is not exactly up to par >.> (I have, perhaps, 500 mtg cards, and a few thousand ygo cards....)

My MTG decks are

1. Dark Deck
2. Light Deck
3. Forest Deck

and

5. Multi-attribute deck.

(I did have a fire/water deck... I wonder what happened to it....)

That game is pretty popular where I live, more than most other trading card games. I do not play, unfortunately, but I would like to.

I used to play Magic, but that was quite some time ago. I wouldn't mind playing online for fun though. :P Also played Yu-gi-oh for ages. Still have a fuckton of those cards, but I don't use them at all anymore.

I play super obsessively, and I'm going to a tournament tonight, too.  I can't stand Yu-Gi-Oh, though.  In my town, it's Magic all the way.  If anyone wants to chat Magic, hit me up on IRC, I love the game.

Yu-gi oh was epic during 2 year of play for a bunch of people, because it was easier to learn than Magic, but it gets boring afterward, from what I gather. I think it's barely popular anymore now too, which goes to show that Magic still rules all, despite being complicated for some people who are used to HP, atk and def with nothing else.

Magic has only recently become more complex.  Yu-Gi-Oh is actually based on Magic.  In Magic, you keep track of your life total (kinda like hp) and creatures have power and toughness (kinda like attack and defense).  Most people can pick it up in an hour.

I have played Magic but never really gotten seriously into it. I do have a massive yugioh collection though and have even gotten back into playing a bit more recently

I like Magic a lot, I just don't have the money for it.  Once I spent $60, I stopped, so I only have one weak, blue deck. :-\

Well, actually I first tried Magic around 2003 I think and couldn't get used to it and all the icons, plus the large amount of different cards. On the other hand, I felt Magic was more complete than YuGiOh. Yu Gi Oh was simple back then (it got a bit more complicated now with all those effect monsters), but after a few games it became redundant. Not that I,m much into TCG, though, I just remember my bro went to yu Gi Oh tournament every 2 week back in 2005-07.

One thing that held me back from playing such games much was the expensive cards and how richer people or people who steal cards had an advantage because of this. The other thing was how luck-based it was, too.

DJ_O, I completely understand the money issue.  I have put about $1000 into Magic, but my collection is worth at least $4000, and my winnings from tournaments total a few hundred dollars.  It can be a profitable game.  Ztrumpet: blue/white control decks are pretty strong right now, you should try putting some white in there.

Ouch. If I wanted to, right now I could shell away such amount fine, but I just don't want to, because I still feel it's too much, and would rather just buy a bunch of computer games for $30-60 each. And back when Yu gi oh was popular I really didn't have this money.

As for wins, in my bro's case, I think it was like $100 max, but he always finished 2nd so it was like $10. I think he had to pay to participate each time so it wasn't much X.x. But yeah I think he spent like $3000 in cards and ended up with thousands of weak, cheap cards because he usually bought rare cards from boosters. I think he has like 5 blue eyes white dragons and for weak cards he got like 10 of each kind sometiems. x.x

Ouch. I usually find it easy to move cards around, though, so I can get rid of the bad ones pretty quick.

I've never played Magic, but a few of my friends have.
Perhaps I should look into it, the only TCG I've ever played is Pokemon.

You would enjoy it.  Magic is the original TCG, all the rest are based on it.

hmm, my area must be weird then, it has died off a little, but not *too* much, you just need to know who plays such. I have been an active Yugioh player for 9 years. Anywho, I like magic, but it just does not have that same value to me as ygo

I think I have forgotten how to play magic too O_O (btw, almost no one I know plays magic, and you get bullied more for magic than yugioh >.>) At least 10 people I know play yugioh

Pokémon too was pretty popular at my elementary school back in 2000ish.

Yeah, I was strongly considering doing either that or blue/black, but I decided to place my money elsewhere. :-\

Money was pretty much the reason i stopped playing tcgs. I love deck building and thus i like to have a large card pool to work with. As you can imagine, that gets pretty pricey. i think Magic has endured so long because thet are constantly changing what cards are legal, releasing new cards, and rereleasing old ones. They also try to keep some sense of balance within the game, and are constantly updating mechanics/rules, not so much with yu-gi-oh.

So yea, i still enjoy tcgs, i just wont spend anymore money on them :)

Yeah, money is a big problem if you want to play TCGs.  However, last night I bought a booster pack for $6, and inside was a foil Phyrexian Obliterator, worth $50.

Oh, I love playing Magic! I was just playing it recently with a friend who is a Magic fanatic. Since I'm too poor to buy a deck, he let me borrow one of his 10 or so decks to play. He was nice in teaching me how to play, but he creamed me every time, mainly because I was trying to play his blue/black decks like red decks (trying to kill him as fast as possible). As such, he advised me to get a red starter kit when I can buy cards.

one thing about Yu-Gi-Oh is that the show is REALLY slipping.. I miss the old days with Pegasus and Marik, I hate all this GX and 5Ds crap..

Sir, at some point over the summer, we must have a virtual Magic game over skype... And then, if you have any of the cards, a YGO game >:D

I refuse to play any sort of YGO.  Ever.
But I'd be perfectly open to playing MTG whenever you like.  Hit me up on IRC.

I know that there is also a computer version with virtual cards, but I realize that you would have to buy the virtual cards or exchange your real cards. So a game over Skype sounds fun. Not that I have cards... :'(

Yea, I'll poke you when I have some free time. You might have to set up a deck for me and let me refresh on rules though. It's uh... been a while. :P

I play this game religiously.
However, I play Commander, not Standard.
I do dabble in a bit of Legacy though.
Basic Elfball.

Elder Dragon Highlander at all (similar to commander).  And I'm more religious than you, I promise.  The first page alone of my trade binder is worth $136.  No kidding, I valued it two days ago.  (each page has 4 slots on either side, btw)

Ah.  My EDH decks aren't that fantastic, though.  I play Sen Triplets as a general and I'm thinking about WUBRG slivers for the luls.

ooohh, nice find raylin, that looks nice. I am going to try it out now. It looks promising. what say you Sir?

EDIT: Although I have forbidden memories for this, is it possible to use this for ygo? That would be cool too.

I just looked at the documentation for that, and it looks very promising. I don't have to buy cards! The only problem is that it seems like a somewhat buggy trust thing (it only moves and obeys cards, it doesn't actually apply the rules programmatically).

EDIT: Raylin, the link to Phantom Sanctuary in your signature is broken.

EDIT 2: I just got this program to work on my system, and it is pretty cool. I can't wait to start playing games with this!

I was looking on the database of Magic cards, and I saw some pretty sick cards on there. My personal favorite is the Chaos Orb: to use it, you throw it onto the battlefield, making sure it flips once in the air, and then destory whatever it lands on. It's too bad its banned in tournaments, because my friend would not stand a chance against it. (He mainly plays a White Deck with large amounts of creature tokens - in piles. He also relies on the Platinum Angel, which keeps the owner from losing and the opponent from winning as long as it is on the battlefield. )
