Title: Omnimaga Starcraft tournament
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 23, 2011, 12:46:52 am
In 2006, I organized a Starcraft tournament on Omnimaga, but I lost internet access in Early 2007, preventing us from finishing it. However, noticing more people here got Starcraft 2 lately and knowing some of us still got the original Brood War expansion, I thought it might be fun if we gave this another try.

There would be no specific time at which each game could be played, as long as they are all played within a one month period or before the next balance patch. If Blizzard announces that a PTR test patch is out, then all games must be played within the next week after it's announced, since this basically means a new patch is imminent. Bug fix or minor balance patches (such as hatchery costing 299 minerals instead of 300) won't count.

Basically the format would be one of the following (or we could attempt all 3). Let's say, for example, that the tournament has 4 participants

Version 1: Each player play at least one of each participant
1 vs 2
1 vs 3
1 vs 4
2 vs 3
2 vs 4
3 vs 4

If there's a tie for all 3, repeat this process again. If another tie happens, then a FFA game is made between all players, where the winner takes it all. If the first two spots are tied, then a tiebreaker game has to be played between them.

Version 2: Each player play each race against each participant, which means each people plays against each others 3 times. However, he decides which race he choose per game, as long as he plays all 3 of them, so it's possible that with certain people, some race matchups may not happen.
1 vs 2 x3
1 vs 3 x3
1 vs 4 x3
2 vs 3 x3
2 vs 4 x3
3 vs 4 x3
As you can see, if there are 4 participants, this would mean 9 games per player, for a total of 18 matchups. If two people can manage two games in a week, this could possibly be feasible. However, it would be unfair for the people that are only good at once race, if someone is good at all 3 races, but otherwise might balance out the scores more and increase the fun factor for everyone.

Version 3: Each player play every possible race matchup against each participant, which means each people play against each others 9 times. I do not like this version much, because then we would have to disregard balance patches, as this would mean 27 games per people, for a total of 54.

Version 4: Same as version 1, but each player plays twice against each others, using a different race in the 2nd game. This would mean 6 games per person, for a total of 12 matchups. This might be better IMHO, while still making everyone play two different races.

Version 5: Same as version 4, but the race choice must be set to "Random". This might be a bit unfair if someone ends up with his worst race every few game, though.

-All games have to be played at fastest speed
-Every game has to be played on the exact same map (most likely a standard 4-base map. Not Steppes of War, lol, as everyone will 6 pool)
-To count, each game played would require the replay to be saved and uploaded on the forums. If the replay is forgotten, then the game has to be replayed again.
-All players for this tournament would have to live in North America, because the game is region-locked, although if there would be enough demand, maybe an european Omni tournament could be made later.
-If a player disconnects during the game, his opponent wins automatically, unless the disconnect happened within the first 3 minutes (in that case the replay is required)

I thought it could be doable because even if some people are busy, I am sure it is possible to take 50 minutes to an hour of your time one evening every 2-3 day to play at least one or two matches, not to mention a lot of games won't even last this long, so in some cases somebody might be able to play all his games in one day.

Would anyone be interested? Note that this would be made for fun. Of course if people prefers a Starcraft Brood War tournament, then it could be made too, but all games would need to be played on iCCup. Also maybe we could do multiple tournaments or simply do 3 games per people rounds or something, so we can play multiple maps, even a money map, for laugh.

Is this for starcraft II?

What about a tournament ladder?  That might work well for large numbers of people.  And I for one am definitely going to participate with this :D

It depends. If people in general prefers brood war, then we'll do bw instead. I personally would prefer SC2 though.

As for tournament ladder, what do you mean Builder?

Something like this:
Where we have groups of people who face off to move into the next round, and then they fight off to move to the next round ect until we get to the finals where there are 2 people left.

Oh ok, but that could be pretty long if many games have to be played before for qualification. If each people just play one game vs one random person, it will be kinda unfair if a bronze player gets matched up vs diamond and is kicked out of the ladder in one single game  that is a cannon rush

true I suppose, I guess the tournament style is more for finding the 'best' player out of all instead of ranking them in order properly.

So DJ's idea is roundrobin(?) way, where everyone faces. In builderboy's, it's bracket style.

If there are less than 6 people, DJ's idea is better, while if there are more than 6 ppl, Builderboy's method is better because of sheer amount players would have to play against everyone.

And I would join! I'm on sc2 almost everyday haha

Yeah this is why I thought it would be best at first that each people matches up each player at least once. There would be a standing, then if there are like 6 people participating, then there could be some sort of playoffs. But yeah in bracket style the issue is if someone gets matched up randomly vs diamond and he's bronze, while another bronze player wins vs silver, it will look unfair in the end I think, although I guess the same could be told if the bronze wins over diamond due to a scv rush and a bronze player loses to bronze after a long game

sounds like a plan ^^ I think option 1 would be the best.  Even the best starcraft players only play as their preferred race, so I don't think there is much to be gained by forcing everybody to play games as all races.  And you should make a poll so we can vote :D And then once we're decided, we can have signups ^^

Lol if you are going against someone who doesn't scout nor attack, it would probably work great :P

it's really annoying to go against terran who gets mass hellions and harass while tanking up in their base and getting thors out :(

Well, SC1 can easily be gotten for "free" off the internet, but SC2 is definitely not free :P (~$50-$60)  Also, I'm totally in for this :D

@Hellninja well maybe later there could be a sc1 tournament too. It would definitively have to be on iCCup and reserved for non-Linux users, since I played vs Shmibs who used Linux and we kept getting disconnected from each others, since Wine doesn't handle SC battle net properly.

I would love to participate in this, only have sc1, though I wouldn't mind waiting until after a sc2 tournament. I haven't played in so long x.x, I need to retrain myself.

It would be nice if you could join a sc1 one. Also on sc1 the skills would be more even because most of us didn't play it much in a while, except maybe myself and shmibs, but we had epic lag so it doesn't matter much. Also nice to see you still around Omni guy602665. :D

So far for SC2 we got

DJ_O
Builderboy
jsj795
cooliojazz

Of course if it's done you would need to all post your char code + screen name so we know who is who in the game.

Thanks, I've been completely flooded with work so I've mainly been lurking for a while instead of actively posting. Things should be letting up a bit starting this Friday though. Then I should have time to get back into programming.

Cool to hear. :D

By the way for the ones participating to the SC2 tournament, it might be starting soon. I think a 4 participant 1st run would be a nice idea to see how things work out and see how long it takes to do all the games.

Sadly no reward for those competitions, although there should be a topic somewhere listing all winners of each game/tournament.

Good news: The new balance patch came out yesterday, so this means the tournament can start! For the first one, we will use the 1 game vs each person formula and we can play whatever race we want. Games can be scheduled at any time you want as long as they're done within the month following the tournament start (or one week after next balance patch beta-test start).

Now I need to know who is participating. This is a Starcraft II tournament and so far I had the following people:

Myself ([email protected])
Builderboy
Cooliojazz
Jsj795

However if anyone else from North America or Latin America is participating, please post here. Also to participate I'll need to post your realID so everyone can add each others on Battle.net. Nickname+number code can do too. I give until Friday night to enter so I can finish the tournament thread, listing the standings and participants.

If a minor patch comes out soon, we still continue normally. Most patches coming shortly after a balance patch like 1.4.2 are just bug fixes.

I might join SC1 competition later :D (Even though I'll get pwned in like 5 minutes :P )

I doubt it Yeong, because I myself barely played SC1 since SC2 came out, so I am so used to SC2 micro helpers that in SC1 I'll have an hard time XD. I tried to 4 pool rush shmibs once (after he played like two times only) and it failed. :P

Anyway the deadline to join arrived the other day, so for this trial run we'll be 4 people.
