I hope this doesn't cause problems again from Half Life players that have Netham45 on their friend list though O.O (back in the days, they kept coming in #omnimaga to complain at him about hacks and stuff, because he had omnimaga linked in his Steam profile)

What is Steam?
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 17, 2011, 07:45:34 pm
Some online gaming messenger service that is required to play certain games like Half Life, Portal, etc (sadly). I wish when playing these games Steam didn't have to start automatically (Although I guess it helps to know when your friends are playing some games.)
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: Eeems on December 17, 2011, 07:59:28 pm
I'm pretty sure you can play them without steam. Just go the <steam install dir>\steamapps\common\ find half life and try launching it from there.
Steam is more then just a messenger service. It's a means of getting the games and updates as well.
http://store.steampowered.com/about/
It's the equivalent of xbox live for the computer.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 17, 2011, 08:34:00 pm
Hmm I see. I always thought those games were made dependent on Stream. Also I hate how it automatically downloads 800 GB large files of Supreme Commander 2 everytime I start steam anyway.
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: Eeems on December 17, 2011, 10:52:21 pm
Steam games are just games packaged to be used with steam, they aren't always dependent on it. There are a few that require it for multiplayer but other than that you don't actually need to have steam running for most of them.
You can disable automatic synchronizations so it doesn't sync your game data to the cloud. I'm not sure if you can disable updates though, but you can always pause the downloads if you don't want them running.

Actually, The Game is this large.

Seriously though I will probably join the group soon.

Post by: Eeems on December 18, 2011, 01:28:33 am
according to wikipedia it's only 5GB
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Commander_2
It's probably got a lot of extra content that make it a ton bigger though.
The biggest game I have is 20GB I think. One of the total war games.
We need to find a good game that all of us have so we can all play :)

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 18, 2011, 02:22:38 am
If you are replying to my last post I was talking about another game (hence "The Game") :P

I personally don't really play any Steam game except Audiosurf, though. I think I had a free copy of Half Life 2 though.

I actually got TF1 too I think. However from experience it crashed quite often on my XP computer. not sure if it runs on Seven, considering it dates back in 1997.

Btw another game messenging service/social network type thing is Xfire. However it tends to mess with some 2D games.

Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 18, 2011, 10:42:38 pm
I was kidding about the 800 gigabytes game. Supreme Commander was about 800 MB I think. It was still insane that it got redownloaded completely every update instead of patches like Starcraft II. If Starcraft II did the same thing, I would have quit playing multiplayer.

What is it? Is it like Starcraft or something?
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: Eeems on December 19, 2011, 06:30:24 pm
It's a RTS but on a larger scale then starcraft. It's only similar to starcraft in the fact that it's an RTS.
It's basically a battle sim between massive armies.
Here is an example of overmap gameplay and the actual battles

lag doesn't always depend on how good your computer is. You also have to understand that sometimes people can't help but lag due to distance etc.

Damnit a few days ago someone told me L4D2 was $3 or so on Steam, but when I arrived on the site during night, the deal expired and game was back to $10 :(

I might still get it anyway, though, but I'm unsure yet because since I'm not much into that type of game, I don,t know if I want to spend money on something I'll play once or twice then get bored of. X.x

Also Eeems I noticed you were missing lately O.o (on IRC, that is).
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: Eeems on December 27, 2011, 03:03:42 am
Yeah I've been busy playing games with my brother, sleeping, working recently. I'll still pop in irc sometime soon, but I'm not going to be on every day. I don't have the energy all the time to want to be on.
I have two more shifts on nights and then I'm moving to days again. Who knows, maybe I'll be on more again after that :)
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 27, 2011, 03:15:34 am
Aaah ok. Also chances I see you on IRC are usually small to begin with because I work almost every weekend (although this could change for a bit) and I tend to not check Omni right when I return.

Also was the Christmas rush bad where you are? Because the same named store near my supermarket had like 15-20 cars at once in the parking during rush times, sometimes less (even on Dec 23rd) O.O

Our store's rush was absolute chaos, though... but we got free pizza for dinner last thursday :P
Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group

Since I work nights I have no idea how the Christmas rush was. The store is closed during the night.

Title: Re: Omnimaga Steam Group
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 27, 2011, 05:44:40 pm
@Eeems: Ah ok I thought you would still have an idea based on how empty shelves were when you arrived and how much stock got out of the backstore or something :P Here the Rona store was unusually quiet during the Christmas rush, while every other store were extremely busy.

@saintrunner: Yeah I remember that. Over Canada we have Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) instead of Black Friday and it's pretty insane too, so I usually be careful when I go shopping then. Usually, however, electronic stores limits the amount of people that can get in the store at once so you have to wait outside in line for about 15-30 minutes, and there are security guards in case the crowd needs to be controlled. Stuff can still happen sometimes, like in Winnipeg for example there was a pepper spray attack.

@Back-on-topic: THe other week I bought Duke Nukem forever for like $6 on Steam, but I didn't like it much for some reasons. It seemed like the old one was better. However if anyone play that game online I guess we can play eventually.

I should really install Portal 2 at one point. I just waited before downloading it to not exceed my bandwidth cap too much.

I'm pretty sure you can't play borderlands on two different types consoles together ( ie: ps3-xbox 360 or ps3-pc or pc-xbox 360 ).
You would both have to have it for the same type of console for it's multiplayer to work. I'm no expert though so I would advice googling it to see if people have made it work or not.

I confirm. Portal 2 have cross-platform multiplayer. I played with my bro who was on his PS3 the other day.

I guess Valve will explore this feature further in their future releases.

I used to have Borderlands, but I sold it one month later because I got bored out of its repetitiveness.

So far I'm loving Borderlands. I like these type of games (Fallout and RAGE<3), and the fact that I can play Borderlands with friends makes it even better.

Yeah actually liked the beginning and it was quite funny sometimes. I just got bored after 5 or 6 missions because every mission was pretty much the same thing or close. All you were doing was talking to a NPC to get a quest, bringing him back the item he wanted, repeat, and so on. I prefer games where you always progress in the world and have to do a large variety of stuff like in Final Fantasy games or other FPSes. :/

Ahh, okay. Free-roam FPS games with RPG elements are my favorite kinds of games, although strict FPS's are a close second ;)

I'd have to say so far my top anticipated games for 2012 are Borderlands 2, Prototype 2, Halo 4, and Mass Effect 3.

I heard Borderlands 2 actually solves a bit of the over-repetitiveness issue that is typical in MMORPGs and some newer RPGs. I wonder if that's true?

Also Halo 4?? O.O

I'll pass on Mass Effect, though, because I found it way too complicated. :(

My most awaited game is Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm Expansion Set.

Yeah, Halo 4's being made by 343 Studios or something like that. The trailer shows him firing his new overpowered magnum with explosive bullets.

AH ok. I am surprised, though, because I thought Halo 3 ODST was like Halo 3-II and Halo Reach the 4th.

And no I won't go on Youtube to seek for Halo 4 trailers, because I'm sure I'll get rickroll'd. :P

Mhm, and 343i (i is for Industries) is also planning to make Halo 4 part of the Reclaimer Trilogy, so they're also planning on Halo 5 and 6.

EDIT: Lol, DJ, no rickrolls :P there's a legitimate Halo 4 trailer.

Oh I was saying this because in 2008 and 2009, after Halo 3 had come out people started flooding Youtube with fake Halo 4 trailers, most of which were rickroll pranks. I'm sure most of those vids are still there. :P I even had one on my old account which got 300 hate comments XD.

I actually found it a few seconds ago. I was surprised that most rickroll vids didn't come first. :P
