Title: Please rate my commentaries
Post by: Scipi on November 19, 2012, 10:30:03 pm
So I've recently started making commentary videos for a game series I play called Total War. I have no previous experience making videos period, so I'd like to ask for your opinions on some of my videos and how I could improve upon them. :)

Like do I ramble too much? Am I understandable? Are the videos too long?

Here's the latest video I've posted:

And this is my channel if anyone's interested.

Straight off, watch the mic peaking. You need to try to adjust you mic sensitivity or maybe scoot back a bit. You will sound much clearer.
*Edit* listened for about 5 mins. Sounds fine, you didn't seem to be rambling too much afaict. Make sure to speak clearly too, there were a few times when you weren't speaking clearly. For example, i think you were saying ruined, and it sounded like "runed". Overall fine though. It may also help you if you have something specific that you want to talk about to write out notes or an overview ahead of time of what you want to talk about. That can help keep you on track. :) Also keep in mind that longer isn't always better. People tend to have shorter attention spans, and sometimes quicker videos that show case something specific will keep people from getting bored and keep them coming back.

Thanks for the feedback.

For some reason, the program I am using won't pick up my headset mic, but it will pick up my webcam mic. So I've been using that. I do have another mic that I've yet to try, however.

I will definitely try to prepare some notes. Sometimes when I do have something specific to talk about, I either go too off on a tangent, or I'll sound awkward trying to say it at an inopportune time. Most of these videos are live multiplayer videos, however so I don't have much control over how long they take. if they go too long, then I'll usually scrap them or redo it in a replay video.

What I like is how the game sound quality is pretty good. A lot of LP/commentary vids for games have game sound recorded with the mic rather than via speakers with the voice recorded via mic.

Just finished watching the whole vid, it's pretty good. In the beginning it peaked a few times but during the game itself it was better. keep it up :D

It is :D To spread your units like that, you hold the left mouse button with the units selected and drag. If you use pikemen, the most optimal depth is about 4 rows, for hoplites it's 3 rows and for legionaries I find 5 -6  to work best.

I use Fraps which records the sound from the game automatically. I also send the sound to my headset speakers and have the music off so the mic only picks up my voice. When I made my first video, you could barely hear me over the music, lol.
