Just out of mere curosity, DJ, what race would you hope to start geekboy on?  All races are good, but I've never heard of a beginner starting as Zerg before, it's always been either Terran or Protoss...

Btw, warning: since we'll be playing on iCCup unless just people who can play on Bnet are on, remember that iCCup only allows official maps and iCCup tournament maps. This means Fastest Money Map, Zero Clutter, Micro Jail Fastest and the like are not allowed. We'll have to do with regular maps, altough it's the real Starcraft after all. I'm not as great on non UMS/money maps but I should be able to challenge people anyway I guess :P

really? Mhmm strange. I was certain only their maps were allowed? Or maybe it's just for ladder games. Idk. I guess we just need to try choosing a map we want and if it doesn't work then oh well.

I hope DJ doesn't mind me throwing in my two cent's worth, even though he's the one who should be answering this question...

Most of the time, Terran is the best starting race.  Terrans are the most versatile and have an average cost.  Most of their units have a ranged attack and can be used for more than one purpose, meaning if you have to change strategies instantly, it's easier to do so than with the other races.  It's important to note that Terran is the only race that can build anywhere...also important to note is the Terran Battlecruiser is the most powerful unit in the game if you use it correctly.  (For those of you who want to argue about the Protoss carrier, this has been proven)

However, if--if--you're finding you have tons of money to spend when you're playing because you forget to spend it, you might want to play as Protoss.  They cost a lot of money to build, but that's because their units are very beefed up.  They also play somewhat similar to Terran, with a few differences, but if you can play Terran, you can play Protoss without too much trouble.  I play as Protoss because as a noob, I always have all this money left to spend.

I personally don't recommend Zerg for beginners, because they are in no way similar to the other two races.  I'll let someone else give the details

I would like to do so. Basically I could setup a game in melee mode, where we would play each others but we would have the same race and first I would teach you how to build stuff and the like

Can I join if I promise to be nice? :)

Altough I personally found it easier to go with Protoss for a while at first, I think that Terran is a pretty good race to start with because it acts as a bridge between all other RTSes. Notice how many of its buildings and units have the same names as in other RTSes like Command And Conquer for example. PLus since they're human-based, It's easier to get used to. Now the only problem that comes is that there are so many level upgrades to do and when you have lots of SCVs building stuff at once, you can no longer keep up with all of the ones that finishes, especially when building a lot of supply depots. This causes many SCVs to end up idle because you forgot them. The defense is also poor at the beginning. TO make bunkers functional you have to train marines and the like, which takes a lot of units. For long range defense, you have to use siege tanks, which also takes units, so if you have a lot of ground defense, you waste a lot of unit slots out of your max of 200. That said, marines are pretty good at defending against early Zergling rushes, providing you have enough of them, plus you can lift your buildings to keep them out of reach of early Protoss and Zerg attacks.

With protoss, you got fewer defense/attack upgrades to do than Terran, making it easier to plan ground-only strategies, but units takes more ressources and air units have a lot more abilities to learn than Terran. Also Protoss has the best defense (Photon Cannons can defend against both ground and air attacks), plus when you build, you only need one single worker as he doesn't need to stay next to the building under construction.

With Zerg, this is a totally different concept. It can take a while to get used to it but once you do (if you do) I find them pretty easy to use, because the tech tree is easier to remember and climb. What I like with them is that all units are built from one single place and drones can send minerals and gas to any hatchery. So if your main hatchery is destroyed, the drones will just go to the next one (if you have one right next). Zerg defense isn't too great against ground units, though, altough unlike Terran, it doesn't waste any unit slot. Also with Zerg when you do a building the drone morphs into it, meaning you lose your drone.

But yeah, I think Terran might be a good race to start with, especially if you're used to other RTSes involving modern or futuristic wars

well there's another step to do before playing, though.

First, it's not guaranteed we'll be able to play all together. We might have to do some separate matches. Latency errors might be an issue still.

What we need to do is try to join each others games and see who would be the best host. I know on Battlenet I can't join Cooliojazz but he can joins me fine. I don't know for iCCup

EDIT: when you get on the server and logged in/registered, type /join omnimaga
