Title: What are your thoughts on the Nintendo 2DS?
Post by: annoyingcalc on August 30, 2013, 06:51:53 pm
I have been gone at camp for a while, and I decided to read the front page of yahoo to get a not so helpful sense of what happened while I was gone and I found this: the Nintendo 2DS no, it isn't a typo.

What are your thoughts on it?

erm, what the heck, who would want to buy that next to the 3DS >.<

Imho it's a DSi+better resolution+bigger top screen-hinges. I'm not a fan, but then again it IS targeted mainly towards a younger audience.

Is that just a 3DS with it's 3D screen replaced by a 2D one? Isn't technology meant to get better over time, not worse?

Seems like Nintendo has been prolonging their work on Flipnote Studio 3d. My brother can't wait for it and constantly talks about it, I'm personally waiting for Zelda Wind Waker HD, and Zelda A Link Between Worlds.(I think that is what it is called)

So it's a 3ds without 3d ? If it's a lot cheaper then I'm actually interested. Maybe it could even be modded in a full 3ds who knows ?

I would only be interested if it was significantly cheaper...
Isn't technology meant to get better over time, not worse?
I remember when Nintendo just decided to drop gamecube support for the wii, market it as "Family edition" and keep it THE SAME PRICE *facepalm*  sadly my my parents were stupid enough to get me one of those "family edition" models for christmas :_(

Apparently it will be $129.

Roboman, that is a sad story indeed.
I'd buy it only if it were moddable.

Yeah I guess it's like how TI released several models of the 83+.

Nintendo targets the whole family and thought restricting the 3DS to the 7+ because 3D is stupid, so they made an entry-level one for those who can't buy the 3DS for the 3D feature or just hates it and always disables it. Well they tried to please everyone.

The 2DS actually looks really nice to use and play. If they made a version with a 3D screen, I definitely might get it. The only problem with it is that the normal 3DS can fit in a pocket, while the 2DS is stuck in the "open" position.

EDIT: So I wouldn't definitely buy it, but it would be an option.

Yeah i think its because they are worried about the 3D health warnings for youngsters (even though you can turn it off).

:?

I'm guessing there'll an intended audience and an actual audience:

Intended: kids - no hinges to break and no eye-aching 3d
Actual: college students - lower price :P

They look pretty slick anyways. Good luck fitting it in a pocket tho.

:?
I didn't thought about that actually. It might actually make sense, but now that you mention it, I think another issue is that the way the old DS and 3DS models are designed, if a kid gets very frustrated at a game then throw the 2DS on the wall, it has no chance to break in half or something.

I personally don't see the point for me, though, especially that it won't even fit in my pocket and I can disable 3D (which I only use when necessary) on the 3DS. I guess it's a good thing for people who wants a cheaper alternative that can still run 3DS games, but then this might render certain games not playable at 100% (such as the optical illusions in Super Mario 3D Land).

It is entirely possible that the 3D got underused, though, and that Nintendo is on the verge of switching to a single screen handheld like the Wii U gamepad (inb4 Nintendo 1DS). It is also possible that the Wii U and 3DS sales were lagging and Nintendo needed some excuse to rack in some extra cash. However, the the likes-dislikes ratio on the official Youtube video rivals Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black videos, so it's clear that it hasn't been well-received so far.

EDIT Lol Nintendo disabled ratings and comments O.O.
I remember when Nintendo just decided to drop gamecube support for the wii, market it as "Family edition" and keep it THE SAME PRICE *facepalm*  sadly my my parents were stupid enough to get me one of those "family edition" models for christmas :_(
The worst part actually about the Wii Mini is that it has no online support.
Imho it's a DSi+better resolution+bigger top screen-hinges. I'm not a fan, but then again it IS targeted mainly towards a younger audience.
The difference, though, is that the DSi cannot play 3DS games at all. To be honest, though, I think the next handheld is better off with no 3D. The 3D is too annoying to be useable, because you need to be perfectly aligned with the 3DS (distance-wise) to ensure that the 3D will even work.

I think this was a smart move. It comes out on the same day as Pokemon X & Y, so it will probably explode in sales. Strange how apparently the 2DS isn't being released in Japan, though... I guess there are so many people with 3DS's there already that they just don't care?

Glad they are going back to conventional designs. I was worried about a third screen on the back of the 4ds.

So let me get this straight: no 3d and it cant be closed with a 2 screen design? No thanks. Sounds like a piece of junk.

I actually like this... the price is reasonable and I don't need 3d. I also think Nintendo should make kind of a new concept without touch screen and make it somewhat smaller with HD screen. Though that's not gonna happen too soon I reckon :P

Nintendo One Dual Screen?  I think not.

No, the family edition was different.  It was the model that dropped gamecube support.  The Wii Mini went further and dropped online support :(

Yes, I'm quoting myself. :P It appears that the above statement is exactly what this thing is. This makes no sense to me at all. It's big and ugly, and there's no way in hell it's fitting in any of my pockets. It certainly isn't fitting into the pockets of anyone under seven years of age... (Nintendo's stated target demorgraphic for this device). This is supposed to be "portable" right? It also has a smaller screens than the 3ds XL, so that would contribute to eystrain much more than 3d imo.

I see this thing being a huge flop for Nintendo. I honestly can't see them selling many of these. I'm really quite confused by the direction they're trying to take here.

Yeah, if it was just a 3DS with no 3D, maybe I would have had a look at it. But its design (can't close it) makes it unusable for me. I'd rather pay 30€ more and be able to carry a 3DS with 3D disabled.

Now that I think about it, maybe too many kids lost their 3DS everywhere so Nintendo decided to design one that is easier to spot in the woods or something.

Meh, saving 50$ on a 170$ console does not seem worth losing the nice 3D and folding.  Is the 3Ds backwards compatable, or is that something only the 2ds has?

Nintendo handhelds have always had some backwards compatibility, so the 3DS can probably run NDS/DSi games as well. (I'm not 100% sure because I don't own one)

Just get the hot-pink 3ds. Problem solved.

Yes, 3DS can play all DS/DSi games. (Of course, excluding game features that used the GBA cartridge slot :P)

Not true, the Original Gameboy had no backwards compatability (#Trollface)

Who needs backwards compatibility if you can have forward compatibility? The original gameboy was forward compatible with some special gbc games :D

the irony is that some of those games didn't even have enhanced colors in the Super Game Boy.

Shouldn't the 1DS have an 1D-screen?

EDIT: since DS stands for dual screen, it should actually have 2 1D screens. I wonder what kind of games you could play on that...

@annoyingcalc: at least the ones you described fit in a pocket. I wouldn't mind your 1DS to come out (but lol, your 0DS is a bit unusable).

@DJ_O, I never heard of one. Maybe there was games using only sound on "regular" consoles too, but I still have never heard of them if any.

If you wouldn't be able to link play......just no.
Also, i don't see a reason why you shouldn't be able, as they say it is fully backwards compatible with the 3DS.

1DS: Simon, any button reaction game

0DS: Hold the Button (that's pretty much it)

I'm just waiting for the 4DS next year. Pan-dimensional gaming would be awesome./me runs

Sometimes, Nintendo will like to trick parents into buying something cheaper, expecting to save money, only to find out that some features are missing, so that way, parents buys the 2nd model that is complete.
