Hey guys, new here. I've got a question for you guys. So I bought a TI Nspire CX CAS calc back in high school and wasn't allowed to use it cause it was illegal (Which I wish I fought against, but I didn't really care at the time). Anyways, my parents spent the money wanting me to use this throughout university, and I agreed for obvious reasons; it's an awesome little machine! Now this is my problem. I'm not allowed to use any CAS calculators in my exams, quizzes, tests, etc. So I was wondering if you guys could help me find a way to wither disable all CAS functions, or to installed the non-CAS calc's (CX) OS onto mine so that I can use this one without having to go and shell out the extra monies to buy a TI-84. I don't want to spend the time and money to sell mine, and buy a different calc unless this is an extremely daunting task (which I would find hard to believe since you can install the CAS OS on a CX calc no problem (link to that article (http://bit.ly/1yKT8KM)).
If you guys could help me out, that would be incredibly appreciated!

Hmm good question. I know that the TI-Nspire CX series got a teacher mode that restricts the functionality of the calculator, but I don't know if it has any option that can disable CAS commands in particular. Installing a non-CAS OS on your CAS model won't help because the word "CAS" is written on your calculator case so the teacher might not take the risk, in case you have two OSes installed.
Hopefully somebody here is more familiar than me about teacher mode and if CAS features can be disabled or not.
If installing a non-CAS OS on your model was accepted, though, then even then your calc needs OS 3.1 to do it from what I remember (so if you have 3.6 or 3.9 then you can't downgrade that low).
Else, what you could do if lower-end and older models are allowed is to buy an used TI-83 or TI-83+ somewhere like Ebay, which would most likely be cheaper than a brand-new 84+, or you could go with an used FX-9860G.

I don't see how this would resolve the issue, since teachers wouldn't know if you had a way to revert it to the old mode. (Which, by the way, you easily could, using the standard OS-changing method)
Short answer: there's no way to do it permanently, or in any way that enforces the inability to do non-CAS functions given a few minutes.
You mentioned the ability to install a CAS OS on the non-CAS nspire. That method also works just fine in reverse. However, it runs from the calculator's RAM rather than truly installing itself. A simple reboot would get you back into the CAS OS, taking around 15 seconds.
If your primary motive is to save money, you could consider buying a used calculator. You can find used ti-83+ calcs on amazon for around $35.

That said it depends where he lives, though. Many Ebay and Amazon sellers do not ship outside United States and those are usually the best deals. Those that ships calculators worldwide often charges more for shipping than what the item costs (eg my TI-85 costed me $10, but with $40 shipping and I even saw people charge $65 shipping from US to Canada for a $25 item).
