Unsigned: patches 1.03 bootcode so you can downgrade your os. Without it you would not be able to downgrade os with the newer calculators. It also puts your name and a revisions number of your choice in about (2nd+mem->about). One downside is that some ti boy apps will not work err: version, you will need to uninstall the mod to fix this.
the author of Epicfail, an alternative to unsigned, says that if it breaks your calc, you will not be able to return it because you have modified it. The maker of unsigned says you will be able to return it if unsigned breaks your calc. Something to keep in mind if you're deciding between the two.
But, does anyone know a game that creates saves and fits on a regular ti 84+?
Also, does anyone know about returning your calculator? Can you just return it for a new one?

Are both authors of the programs from United States? If Unsigned was made by Critor or something, then maybe there are different exchanges/returns policies in France. Otherwise I don't know. But there is no way those programs can break your calc permanently unless you have no clue what you're doing and ignore 0.1% of the readme file.
As for returning a calc it probably depends. Over here, if it's just to get a new model in exchange they only accept returns if your package was not opened and if it's broken they'll give you another calc of the same model in exchange (although you can convince the cashier to give a different model due to you not trusting the brand, but then you're stuck with a Casio or TI-89/Nspire because asking a 84+SE instead of a 84+ would sound weird).

If Unsigned was made by Critor or something
In fact, robberguy mentionned EpicFail and Unsigned but indeed he forgot to mention Critor's Make103, wich patches an OS from the computer side to make it compatible with the boot code 1.0.3.

No, I won't bother, unsigned works fine. Where my cousins live, which is not so far away, the exchange policies are very lenient. Once, I refunded a product I had owned for a month, and they accepted it without looking inside the box. I bet I could exchange my 84+ for an nspire. However, I don't plan on breaking my calculator anytime soon...

Why wont you bother? He is a member of this community and would probably like to find out why it didn't work for you.

Moreover, Make103 can't break the calculator in any way since it doesn't touch the boot code. What it does is make the OS compatible with the new boot code. The only crash you can get is when you transfer the OS to the calc, and if you fail there, you can retry, and if you fail again, you can decide to give up and put the OS 2.55 back.

It doesn't patch the boot code, it patches the certificate (and can, in principle, brick your calc if you pull the batteries at the wrong time.) (But I don't blame you for not knowing the specifics of the patch)

I don't know whether he actually said that somewhere, but I know brandonW is the kind of person who would completely trash a calculator for testing purposes and return it to Walmart, so I doubt he would say that.

I wrote it, never said that (though in both cases, your circumstances are the same, so whether you can return it or not is irrelevant between the two. If you take your calculator to Walmart and say it doesn't work (after recently buying it) they are just going go say "hur dur" and let you get a new one)

In the end, here's how it works. You have about a 30 day window to return your calculator back to wherever you bought it. So if you break it during that period, you're good. But after that, you're not going to be able to take it back no matter what you do. It's the same thing with all other appliances, if something mysteriously stops working within 30 days (and the store can't tell that you actually broke it), you can take it back (not technically legal, but meh). After that, you're just out of luck.

I don't recall ever saying such a thing. I have been known to buy calculators for testing purposes, potentially brick them, and then return them to Walmart.
I also check to make sure they haven't released new versions of the boot code (which I guess falls under "testing purposes").

I guess just be careful depending of where you bought your calc. I know Walmart can go as far as giving you a refund for a brand new console you just bought where you claim it's broken, when in fact you just swapped it with a broken one you bought on Ebay, although I guess some store cashiers might be more careful so you never know. There are other places such as Sears where you have to threaten to report them in order to even get just an exchange for a legitimately defective item.
(Although I still hate Walmart for how high they charge for a TI-84+)

Still, I bet I could return a calculator after 30 days, where my cousins live the stores are all really lenient and relaxed. Sorry for saying those things if they weren't true, I guess I should be reading more carefully. And I won't report problems about make103, it seems it doesn't work only for me, and I bet I'm just being stupid and not doing something right (although I can't think of what that could be).

Then don't report a problem, ask someone who has used it for help on how to make it work.
