Title: Emu8x on TI-84+ Silver Edition
Post by: Ivoah on October 09, 2014, 10:13:03 am
I have managed to install Emu8x with a 86 rom on my TI-84+ SE, and it works for a few moments, but then the screen starts displaying garbage.

It's because you probably have a TI-84+ manufactured after April 2007. The 84+SE calcs made beforehand, along with the newer color model, have 128 KB of RAM available for ASM softwares, while the newer monochrome 84+/SE calcs only have 48. The TI-86 needs 128 KB to be emulated. The RestoreMem and VirtualCalc features in Omnicalc have the same problem, same for USB/MSD8x, older versions of TI-Boy SE and RealSound.

Check the end of the serial number on the back of your calculator. If the last letter is H or higher, then you have a newer calc without the extra 80 KB of RAM pages. Texas Instruments probably did that as a cost-saving measure because... well... 80 KB of RAM is that expensive nowadays, right?  ::)

Darn, it's "H". I loved my 86 before it died. I tried MSD8x and it works, mostly, some of the filenames are garbled.

What happened to your TI-86? I see in your sig that it was $2 or something so perhaps if you bought it for $2 there was a catch?

It worked great for a year or two, and then one night the screen started displaying garbage, so I took the batteries out and put them back in, and it worked for a few seconds, until I started to do something, then the screen messed up again. Are there any other programs that only work on the older ones?

I don't think so but IIRC the new TI-Boy, despite running on all versions, has no Pokémon savestates on new models

That stinks :( Why did TI even have the larger RAM chip if they never used it?

I dunno. They were probably too greedy to continue using them, though
