Title: Ndless problems
Post by: dman2073 on November 01, 2010, 09:12:24 pm
I was on 1.1 on a clickpad, using ndless.  I decided to upgrade.  Everything went through, but when it booted up, the loading bar got all the way to the end and froze.  Please help!!! ??? :'(

Which version of Ndless did you use?

Also I'll move this to the general help section

When you upgraded what OS did you upgrade to, what version of Ndless did you use, and was Ndless installed at the time?

I upgraded to the newest OS, used ndless 1.1.1 and yes, ndless was installed.

Remove the keypad, pull a battery, replace the keypad, and hold down home, enter, p, and on until a menu pops up.  Choose option 2 and resend the OS.

Once reformatted, the loading bar stops halfway and ask for an Operating System to be sent.
Were you able to download one? Did you try to send different OS versions?

hmm when i used ndless 1.1 and reverted back to 2.1 it had no problems (much less than originially getting ndless on the calc, i had to be persistent a few times) basically do what apcalc said. open up the maintenance menu, home enter p on and hold those 4 keys until half of the loading bar then delete the os.

Maybe if you're really desperate, try to do a whole format (but since u said u already did that then i don't know)

Be persistent, it may not work first time. or the second....

EDIT: i actually haven't tried ndless 1.1.1, but i have tried ndless 1.1

I tried using a different OS version, but apparently the os installed but is not working.  It said I could not downgrade. :`(

Try sending OS 1.7 (this is pretty stable and you can downgrade to it from 2.1).  Be sure to download a fresh copy from TI-Bank before sending.

1.7 works!! Should I try 2.1 again, now that it is in a stable condition?

If you want, I think it is ok, but make sure you download a new copy from TI's website in case the copy you have is in any way corrupted.

I'M glad it got fixed. Personally when Ndless crashed or something I just did a full reformat (not just the OS) and it usually fixed it but I was using Ndless 1.0 so it might be different.

Just would like to explain what the problem was. Sorry for being late.

If you have never launched OS 1.4 or above on your calculator, the boot2 version is 1.1.

There is a major bug with the 2.1 OS.
It cannot boot on a basic TI-Nspire with the 1.1 boot2.
(there is no problem with TI-Nspire CAS, and the boot2 code is the same on both basic and CAS TI-Nspire)

On a basic TI-Nspire with OS 2.1 and boot2 1.1, the calculator just freezes when the progress bar reaches 100%.

To fix the problem, you need to use the maintenance menu to remove the 2.1 OS.
Then, install and boot any OS 1.4 to 2.0.1.
This will upgrade the boot2 to 1.4.
Then, you can install and boot OS 2.1 without any problem.

TI is aware of the bug but has done nothing since july.
This is a big problem in France.
Nspire calculators aren't very popular and shops still sell old TI-Nspire with boot2 1.1.
The 1st time you connect that new calculator to the computer, TI-Nspire Computer Link automatically tells you to install OS 2.1...
And so, without doing anything unofficial, you're getting a new unusable calculator.

This sucks, I didn't knew about that. My Nspire came with OS 1.4 and I immediately upgraded to 1.6 when I got it, but I never tried anything above 2.0.1 on it. TI really need to get their act together.

@critor: Wow, that's really shitty on TI's part. They really need to fix that.

@critor: Wow, that's really shitty on TI's part. They really need to fix that.

My posts about that bug on the official french Nspire  forum are just ignored, or are getting rude answers from the moderators (T3 teachers paid by TI), saying that this is not a bug and that I don't know what a bug is...

Your calculator is freezing permanently although you've done nothing unofficial... If it's not a bug, then I guess it's a feature?... :p

(they were trying to explain that it was the users fault, for buying outdated Nspire, and trying to install an OS not supported by the hardware... I guess they don't understand anything, like Ti-Cares...)

Is Univers-TI ran by Texas Instruments? I wouldn't be surprised if it was ran by people working for them as well. Otherwise maybe they're affiliated with the Google group, kinda. However from what you describe, they seems worse than TI-Cares...

oh i forgot to mention, i used nleash first before i downgraded from 2.1 -> 1.1.

endless looping, another reason for TI to take action on all these problems...

Why does it seems like everyone not affiliated with the TI community dislikes it? 3rd party programming has been a well recognized feature of computers for the past two decades. Plus, the only thing TI owns after purchase are the intellectual rights to the OS, which itself includes commands to execute programs. The purchase of the hardware includes the right to use the software for as long as the user wishes. Assembly programs using the hardware are well within the purchaser's rights.

Anyway, more on track, since TI is making the implied promise that their product will work with its purchase, they need to make sure that it does. Having the OS or TI-link detect the boot code version would probably be fairly simple to implement.

I think certain teachers and people who works for TI are just very against calculator games so they will try to do everything to discourage 3rd-party development towards new calculator owners. Not all teachers are against it, though. Critor, Mic and Bisam, from TI-BANK, are all for third-party dev. They just keep an eye on students who play calc games instead of doing their school work in classes. :P
