Title: Need TI-83+ repair help
Post by: ghest1138 on January 23, 2013, 11:25:00 am
My TI-83+ won't turn on, and when it does, there is just a line across the screen that slowly fades. When you press [2nd] [On] it comes back, then fades again. When I do the take out battery and hold delete thing, all it has is a conjumbled screen.

Have you tried ON+CLEAR? There is another key combination I think too but I forgot it. It might be ON+MODE or something. It doesn't seem good in the first place if ON+DEL shows a scrambled screen, though.

What was the last things you did prior this started happening? For example, were you using any program found on BrandonW's website, were you playing a game in particular, were you using Doors CS, MirageOS or Zstart,  was the calc exposed to any humidity (eg when returning from school if it's raining heavily and you have your calc in your backpack)?

I have tried [on]+[clear], and it does nothing. The last things I did were playing around with hexadecimal assembly and such. I did accidentaly leave it under my pillow, and a friend said it might be a hardware problem with the LCD.

Since it's slowly fading, I'm going to guess it's a hardware problem. There's a chance that it might be a software problem (could be the contrast messing around? :P), so maybe try re-sending the OS or something, but idk how much that'll do :/

When was the last time it worked? Was it only after it was left under the pillow the screen stopped working?

Did you try new batteries?

Well, I don't have a link cable, so I can't resend the OS. It worked Today, but I am afraid it may crash again. And yes, I did check the contrast. I think the batteries in it are new, but I don't have any backup batteries for it :( Since it is working for today, my main concern is learning what caused the problem. I have an ASM program on there to check the batteries, and it says they are low, so I will probably need new ones soon. I opened up the calc and used a meter to check all the LCD connections, and they seemed fine. Could low temperature cause an internal failure? It also was working a few days ago, after a few dozen hard resets. It started working today when I did a hard reset, and the message wasn't conjumbled. I pressed on to exit the reinstall OS thing, and when I turned it on, I t worked fine. I really, REALLY want to know why this sort of thing happens so I can prevent it in the future, and help others with their calc problems.

Get fresh batteries every once in a while. That's what you should do. Also get yourself a battery tester to check if the "new" ones are actually full.

I had a similar problem but with an NXT (also a programmable device with a monochrome LCD) and replacing the rechargeable battery with normal batteries solved everything.

That line right there says to me that it was just a simple crash or something. In any case, here are a few things you can do:

1. Press Mode -> Alpha -> S (ln). And then press enter a few times and wait for the 0 to turn to a 1. If it does indeed turn into a one, then your OS is fine. If it say ROM FAIL, then your OS is corrupt and you'll have to work on resending it. (It's unlikely that it's corrupt).

2. Wait it out for now. See if the problem comes back. If it does, I would assume the "battery + DEL" combo will fix it

3. If it comes back, do "battery + DEL" and then clear all of your memory (2nd -> + -> 7 -> left -> 1 -> 2). Though, before you do this, I recommend you go find a link cable and send your stuff to your computer.

4. If after all 4 of these, you still encounter the glitch, then we can indeed call it a hardware problem. But until then, I'm going to guess it's just a crash.

I did the self test, and it was fine. I am all out of AAA's, but am getting more soon.
I have an ASM program on there to check the batteries, and it says they are low, so I will probably need new ones soon.
I will still reinstall the OS when I get a link cable, but for now it seems to work fine.

Maybe do a flash test (battery + CLEAR when no os installed).

And with the batteries: in germany i used rechargables on my ti and recharged them every month >.<

To get rid of this problem forever: get a 5v power supply and hook it up to the battery compartiment somehow (remove the batteries though)

It crashed again today >_< I did battery+ del about a hundred times, but the reinstall OS message was jumbled. On+ Clear doesn't do anything. I am out of AAA's, but the ones in it are pretty fresh. I can't resend the OS or do a flash test or anything because I don't have a link cable :(

The solution: get a link cable and a shitload of recharchable batteries.

Is it possible to build/scavenge your own unit-to-unit link cable? If so, what do you need to do so? I would rather have my own than have to borrow one every time I need a cool program(Mimas IDE!)

(sorry for the double post)

UPDATE!! I borrowed a ti calc-to-calc cable and plugged it into a class calc. I took out a battery from mine and put it back in while holding delete. The install screen came up (jumbled), and on the class calc I selected send OS. After about 5 minutes of a jumbled "Receiving..." screen, the working calc said "Done" and mine turned off. When I turned it back on, it still didn't work!!! I heard there is a reset button near the backup battery, is that true?
