Title: nspire downgrade guidance
Post by: Stauf99 on January 06, 2014, 11:28:25 pm
So here is what I don't want to end up doing:

Hi,

Some TI-Planet content is available in both english and french.
It should default to english for guests when their computer language is not french.

Once regestired, you can set your preferred language in your user profile.

Anyway, you may ask your question in both french and english - most of us speak english too over there :)

If you did update your TI-Nspire HW-E to 3.6, then your Boot2 was also updated to 3.2.4.

To freely read PDF you need Ndless which requires OS 3.1
But OS 3.6 forbids you to install OS 3.1.
Thus you need Nlaunch, which makes Boot2 ignore the minimal installable OS version set in memory.
But Nlaunch only works with Boot2 3.1.

You then need to reflash Boot2 3.1.
This requires an external hardware: an USB/TTL interface:

By putting the TI-Nspire in Boot2 receive mode (Doc+Enter+2 while rebooting) and connecting ground, Tx and Rx to three contacts on the TI-Nspire bottom J01/Dock connector, you can reflash Boot2 3.1 with the Hyperterminal software coming with Windows up to Vista.

After this is done you can litterally do everything you want with your calculator, and we have comprehensive tutorials in both french and english for each step :)

So here's what I'm working with: ti-nspire cx cas, Version 3.2.0.1212, Boot1 3.0.0.99, Boot2 3.1.0.16

After drinking from this forum's infinite wisdom, I found that I dodged a bullet not updating any higher.
Now I want to keep avoiding that bullet and get ndlessly goodness, but i need some guidance.

So I have the right 3.1 update file (assuming TI didn't to some malicious switching).
I never even installed computer link before, so how does that work with installing the OS? Which version should I use?

Do I need to TNOC anything? (not that I know how)

Special request, anyone know how to get the student software 3.1 version?

Edit: google chrome translator is awesome

You can use TiLP (an open source alternative to the official connectivity software) for installing the 3.1 OS update. Then, just follow the installation instructions to install ndless 3.1 and you're ready to go! If you have any questions, just drop them in here!

Yeah, here (http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8677) in English :)

Beware though, it was written before those "updates" appeared, so whenever a software says "does thou wantz 2 update bro ?", answer no. It would be a good idea I think to read the whole tutorial a first time without doing anything else than downloading files, then install "outdated" versions (3.1) of the mentionned softwares and follow the tutorial without being plugged to the internet (so that maybe no software will detect it is outdated).

Thanks guys, but I'm not having trouble installing ndless, I'm not even at that step yet. I want to downgrade with out messing up, so ideally i'm looking for someone who has done it before.

can anyone link me to a 3.1 version of the student software and computer link software? I couldn't find it on TI - planet.

Do I need to TNOC the 3.1 update file?

For the Computer Link Software, the 3.2.0.123 version will do fine, I have it on my PC and it never bothered me in any way :)
For the Student Software, I don't know, I never used that one.
And TNOCing OSes updates is always a good idea to get rid of useless files and gain user space ;)

i have and it went smoothly

btw u can also use computer link software, i don't have the link thou :(

also there are multiple options available when using nlaunch(y), you can have 3.1/3.2 combo or 3.1/.3.3 combo or 3.1/3.6 combo

3.6 is the latest and nlaunchy removes the restrictions of the official os.

u can check it out @ https://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13311&p=151413

IT WORKED! without a single problem at all!

Thanks everyone, I can't express how happy I am after all the reading I've done last night.
Your response made me feel a lot better about this.

Excited to try a bunch of stuff but first, a nap

Hehe, congrats on getting it done! I know from my own experience that handling this stuff can be quite scary especially when there's a chance to mess everything up. When I got it done I was so relieve that everything went well ^^

Good to hear that it went fine without much hassle. Now just be careful with some programs like Nover (read the readme carefully) and make sure you run the latest Ndless version, to reduce risks of having to reformat after an Ndless program crash. When I used my TI-Nspire on a regular basis to play games, I had to reformat it at least once a month.

Thanks aeTIos, that's exactly how I felt.

DJ, could you tell me a little more about reformatting? I haven't even heard of that till just now as far as calculators go

I don't remember the exact key combination to access the maintenance menu, but when the calc goes bad (eg it fails to boot the OS) sometimes we have to go there to remove the OS and reset all data. Then we re-install OS 3.1, Ndless and all our programs. It is usually pretty rare, especially with Ndless 3.1, but it can happen.

for maintenance menu, press doc, enter and ee while holding these, press reset on the back

You can also hold down these keys while the calculator reboots (it might be hard to press all of those and reset at once :P)

Dawat ? When Ndless crashes a simple reboot is needed. I never heard of an Ndless program that forces you to reformat when it crashes...

No need to reformat for that, even if I dont get how you manage to make it crash so often ...
Next time, just launch the diagnostic software and reset  (it auto-fixes itself). Life saver.

Nover and nCraft. (Even with the AHB always setup to a normal frequency)

And I didn't know about the diag software trick. I always worried that I had to do some funky and dangerous manipulations there to fix stuff, so I usually avoided that place.
